I used to not tip, but then I lived with people who delivered food and dated people who served food. I still don't entirely agree with the principle, but I'll usually tip $2+ dollars nowadays.

I also tipped my long-time barber $6.50 yesterday, but that was more because it's the last haircut I expect from her before I move out of town.

He had an episode of Comedy Central Presents that was arguably one of the best performances I had seen up to that point, so him getting a show didn't surprise me; I was more worried for Mind of Mencia because it was coming immediately after Chappelle's departure. Mencia also remains a fine stand-up comedian, joke-stealing controversies aside.

Still, Mind of Mencia...what a terrible, terrible direction for him.

I understand STAR GameSchool is teaching whatever games you donate teach; they seem to work off the software you give instead of creating their own or restricting themselves to the Oregon Trail (or the modern equivalents of it).

Vinny's Kids definitely lacks information, yes. I may contact them for more info, but right now it doesn't look like it does anything the others don't already.

Ayuyu makes a good point that Child's Play is the most well-known of the charities and that game-based charities are not well-known, so here's some more info on the aforementioned:

GameSchool - http://www.stargameschool.org
Give them to a good cause and help children learn something from the games you grew up with. STAR, Inc.’s GameSchool department which uses preexisting games as a medium to develop academic and social skills in children invites gamers to recycle their old games by donating them to charity. Any donated game, game system or accessory would be used to teach children through fun, interactive and innovative classes in a positive environment. GameSchool currently offers classes teaching elementary school aged children to play games together both competitively and cooperatively, much like a sporting team. In the future and with gamers’ help we would like to be able to not only offer more classes to but to also provide children with a lending library of games. Donations may also be sold with the proceeds being used to help fund our program. STAR, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) non-profit, and donations made to it are tax-deductible.
DonateGames - http://www.donategames.org
DonateGames is now accepting donations of all electronic games, gear, and gadgets – whether they work or not! Our charity will take your unwanted electronics off your hands, resell them, and direct 100% of proceeds to children’s rare disease research and treatment; and because DonateGames is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, your donation is tax-deductible!
Vinny’s Kids - http://www.vinnykids.org/
Vinny's Kids, Inc. accepts new and gently used items as listed below, monetary donations, honorary and memorial contributions, and the valuable time of its volunteers! Vinny's Kids is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity so all contributions are tax deductible and donations are properly recognized.
Child's Play - http://www.childsplaycharity.org
Child’s Play works in two ways. With the help of hospital staff, we set up gift wish lists full of video games, toys, books, and other fun stuff for kids. By clicking on a hospital location on our map, you can view that hospital’s wish list and send a gift.

Child’s Play also receives cash donations throughout the year. With those cash donations, we purchase new consoles, peripherals, games, and more for hospitals and therapy facilities. These donations allow for children to enjoy age-appropriate entertainment, interact with their peers, friends, and family, and can provide vital distraction from an otherwise generally unpleasant experience.

While Child's Play is both the biggest and the first/only one I thought of when proposing the idea, they only work with events that will give them 100% of the proceeds...which theatres can rarely afford. The idea we've talked about has been to give discounted tickets for people who bring in items to donate, which makes the other three charities a lot more appealing...particularly DonateGames since we wouldn't have to worry about whether or not the donations work. STAR GameSchool is the most unique idea, however, since young designer-hopefuls will learn from their donations.

I don't know if there are other charities worth mentioning or not, but those are the ones Child's Play recommends if we're collecting items to donate. Still, the theatre's open for other creative ways to work a charity in too!

I've recently told you guys about my play ONLINE FIGHTING getting its world premiere next year, so the next step I've suggested with the Tennessee Stage Company is to find a video game-related charity to involve with the play. I've spoken with their Board of Development, and it's been suggested I review game-based charities with my gaming friends...

...hey guys!

Which game-based charities are you fans of? It's important the charity involves the gaming community in some capacity. The four I've looked at so far are:

Child's Play
STAR GameSchool
DonateGames
Vinny's Kids

Also, has anybody ever worked with a charity before? Because I haven't and could use any advice in that regard. I just want to do some good with such a personal and important event!

You better believe I'll keep B8 posted, thanks!

Time to make use of the new spoiler-tags.....

I hate every main character in the play, personally, so I'm glad it comes across to others AND remains compelling; it reminds me of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia in that regard. If s*** is going down between two people, sometimes it's best not to be too immediately invested in either person! Lucas is the protagonist by virtue of having no other more admirable characters around him. He felt wronged and picked on even three years after the fact, so he made a bad choice early in the narrative that shouldn't be defended...but despite that, he also grew the most of any major character by apologizing for his mistakes and redeeming his previous loss that held him back for so long. You can see Josh fall back into the same trap Lucas grew out of by the end of the play, but they're quite similar douches outside of how they recover from their mistakes. I don't like to think there's a clear protagonist/antagonist, but the differences between how they handle their losses are probably enough to choose your side accordingly.

Anna also no longer accepts Lucas AS easily...in that she now only asks him to find her online before he wins the championship instead of meeting him for dinner after he wins it all. I also built some more tension around her and Josh's relationship in how he doesn't play games with her like she once did with Lucas. Anna's always been the toughest challenge about this two-act version of the play because I couldn't seem to make her remain the same character between acts, but by changing the timing of her last scene she's begun to make more sense.

I'd be glad to send you the most recent version of the play if you'd like to see those differences for yourself; I think they fix a lot of issues from the recent stage-reading and almost make the show complete. =)

I have not, but I just left a development-meeting to discuss who all we could interest in the piece. Tourney-communities would be an excellent direction, yes, especially since a game-tournament is portrayed in the second act...but I don't know fighter-tourneys well. I think EVO's a pretty big one, too...?

Other businesses of interest (besides Child's Play and local hospitals if CP gets on-board) would be game companies and reviewers. Nintendo, Valve, and Capcom each have various references through-out the play, so maybe they would be interested. If I find the right reviewer, it could potentially get some national articles as well; agasonex seemed to have a similar success with Chester.

CEEEEEEEELLEBRATE GOOD TIMES -- COME ON!

The Tennessee Stage Company has a New Play Festival every year, where it features six-ten new plays each winter. ONLINE FIGHTING was originally a ~twenty-minute stand-alone piece in 2008, but when I submitted it in 2010 they requested I turn the piece into a full two-act play. One drunken summer later, the deed was done and has been totally worth it; they have since featured it as a table-reading in 2011 and as a stage-reading with record-breaking attendance on Superbowl Sunday earlier this year...

...and now, it's returning to the festival one more time to headline with a full production for three weekends. =)

If you're not familiar with ONLINE FIGHTING, it's an action-comedy about two video gamers rekindling a feud. What starts off as fun and games online quickly becomes a battle of jealousy and redemption offline -- especially once loved ones are involved. Though it's been widely enjoyed by people of all ages and demographics so far, I have one review that should give it some special gamer-cred:

That was pretty cool. Thanks for sharing. :)
--SBAllen

I also have linkage to check out the play now if you can't wait until next March!

Two-act stage-reading from TSC's New Play Festival in February, 2012:

Original's first full production from Wild thyme Players' "Duels and Desserts" in September, 2011 (where I co-direct and perform):

Board 8's had a special place in my heart for a long time, and knowing many of you helped read and critique ONLINE FIGHTING along the way has meant a lot. Thanks guys -- I'll be keeping you in touch about the future of the play from here, as always. The next piece of news I'm waiting to hear back on about, for example, is how we can best incorporate the charity Child's Play for this production! Let's see where we go from here.....
