In this game, you're a big fat ghost who can suck in his tummy around walls to be a little safer around spikes. Unfortunately, some spiky areas are too tough for me to understand how to get past them. The music was okay though, even for just a song.

A little! But it's something new every day and I've not dealt with less polished games in a long time. It's...I don't wanna say refreshing, but I think it'll make me appreciate the later games more. It's also giving me a chance to look at what young developers do before they land big titles -- even moderate indie titles -- so as someone goofing around with Twine now and wanting to try Game Maker later, it's motivating in a way there too.

But to your point, some of these games suck and some should have been play-tested enough to at least know you can go past the title screen, yes.

Thrunt

Okay, so this is kinda like The Tops Don't Sting You! but with different philosphies. This one's generally worse to me because:

1) The movement and control-scheme don't feel as good, though I like this momentum-based direction too.

2) You die upon contact with anything and sometimes you gotta cover some distance between checkpoints. Compare this with never dying and shorter levels.

3) This game wants a focus on speed, but first the focus is on survival...and it throws some hard stuff early at you.

I could get behind this game with either more checkpoints or a better difficulty curve. I do like the idea of traveling across bigger levels like these, but as-is its tagline addresses its issue pretty well: "A super-tricky time-attack thrust-em-up." It wants you to be real fast while learning its mechanics in difficult scenarios, and that's not fun in any timely manner for me.

No music and bad sound effects. Uh-oh.

Tesch me nothing about controls, and have the controls I discover be floaty and difficult to work with? Double uh-oh.

It's a shame. I like multi-player battles in arenas, according to my Mario Kart experience. This is a 2D top-down perspective so it controls more like whatever that MicroRacers game was on the N64...but it's just a bunch of confusion even when playing this by myself, and doing anything sounds bad to the ears.

This looks like a phone-game I can just so happen to play on my computer. I like the sounds and graphics...but as sensitive as a mouse can by while also playing something pretty fast-paced here, it was easy to lose. The trees you're supposed to avoid blend right into the background too -- not okay!

I had a bad feeling this game wouldn't last when its downloading process was different from the rest of the bundle and it linked me to install a new plug-in I was missing first.

This game looked okay though! I was maybe twenty or thirty screens into this before it crashed. It reminded me some of the freeware An Untitled Story and the Dizzy-games on the NES, but with some jacked-up scribbling graphics like somebody tried to make Yoshi's Island out of MSPaint alone. The gane seemed designed like it knew it could crash, but it had something akin to charm about it.

I figured out how to link passages in Twine! Alright, this is becoming more fun now. I'll keep checking out walthroughs to get tips. I've not seen a Twine game incorporate pictures or sound yet...is that possible? I'll be investigating that later, once I get my basics down better.

I think I beat this? Seems to me that it's just one room where you click on items inside and read some inner monologue. I liked the choice of turning on the computer and its screen having the same cursor you have in your first person perspective, but ultimately I didn't get a lot from this game.

I imagine the pitch for this was "Hey guys, wanna make an arthouse-version of Goat Simulator with multiplayer?"

You're a dancer with ragdoll physics on a stage...aaaaaaaannnddd go! You move, you flail, you hear kinda creepy music. Not much to it, but it's okay for a quick silly laugh.

Longest Night

I really like Finji's style -- they really capture my attention, first with Lost Constellation and now Longest Night. I didn't really get into CAPSULE, but at least it was neat in a different way.

Anyway, I think this is past of a NITW-series? This was basically drawing constellations in the sky and listening to their chatter about the sky-lore. Their banter suits me well inbetween it all, and the music coupled with the sound effects of the stars absorbed me.

The ending was confusing though. I think this turned a "it was all a dream" conclusion, but I didn't really interpret it well. It's the one criticism I have for the game, but it was a weird sour note to go out on.....

VIDEGOAME

Weird action-puzzler kinda game. At first I thought the game was just taunting me with its text in the top-left...but nope, it actually has some gameplay. It went downhill from there though; I got real frustrated with how tightly the game expects you to move about while the game's camera spins your vision around. Food in this game works something like the insanity meter of Eternal Darkness, but the food doesn't replenish when you die even though you have to pick up keys again if you die.

Game's got something of a concept, but there's a lot of bullshit to work out here too.

Dr. Langeskov, the Tiger, and the Terribly Cursed Emerald: a Whirlwind Curse

I played this last year and just couldn't get into it. I partly blame the title -- you don't see any word mentioned above in the game and only get one or two of them hinted at.

I also understood when I first played it that the team behind The Stanley Parable and the much-less-good-but-still-interesting game The Beginner's Guide were behind this. I don't think it's true, but even if it was it lacks the attention to detail and clear direction of those two games. I wouldn't recommend it even as the free game it was when I first played it.

I did just watch a conference Crows Crows Crows did on marketing though, and that was okay.

Man, all these text-stories count as games? I can't imagine these being too difficult to create. I feel real comfortable with the writing aspect -- maybe I should make a game! Are there design challenges I should consider for the game format? Maybe a particular program to look at?

Anyway, this story seemed disjointed and didn't really keep my interest through-out it, but it had a lesbian scene as well as some humorous pacing that I appreciated early on.

Venting: the game.

I wanted this to provide me some sort of unique experience for the secrets I divulged -- if not for each individual secret, then at least for entering a secret.

Nope! That eyeball didn't care at all about my deepest darkest secret: I poop. You just type aeay until you're fulfilled. This is probably okay for someone who has to get something off their chest safely (I assume safely?), but otherwise this isn't much content to play with.

It's hard to enjoy a one-button multi-player game with built-in timer mechanics by yourself. This could be more fun if I could just focus on my own aim against a friend or accept the insanity of four people gunning for power-ups. As is...well, it's a clean idea for a game and I like its aesthetic, but there's not much for me.

Lily Seed

Here's another game that's more of a short story than a game relying on mechanics. The story's pretty split between a ghost living through a plant's growing seed and your girlfriend walking you through your first lesbian experience. I liked clicking on certain words for some extra text...simple touch they did okay with.

You can be done with this in a minute. Your mouse is a fairy and there's a curious-looking ghost that follows your fairy. You can also grab its nose and drag it everywhere. It's kinda peaceful but also loooooooow on content.

Monkey Pop

Multiplayer game I had to play by myself. It looks like that old arcade'y SMB3-looking multi-player section of the game, but with sawblades from Super Meat Boy too. The game revolves around getting to the remote control first because that lets you control your opponent for a moment -- olenty long enough to make them die on something sharp. I don't see a ton of strategy here, but it's probably fun to try with a friend.

The Tops Don't Sting You!

I like the way this moves! It could maybe be a little better bouncing off jellyfish, not sure really...?

Whatever, you're either a fish or a ship and you touch the tops of jellyfish to complete short levels. I got gold on everything and diamonds on four of them. Simple premise that carried me over pretty well.

Understandable -- I figure most people haven't played most of these games! The fact that this list makes the games I wanna play the most (and the games ya'll have heard the most about) be at the end of the list too really sucks, but I don't wanna accidentally skip over games here. Just wanted to check in since I know scarletspeed got discouraged in his recent topic.

Did ROM get its voice-over update yet, or is that still coming?
