Help!

Got some surprise hits on here! I knew about several of them already, but songs like I Need You and Tell Me What You See are sleepers I didn't expect...nice!

I don't think this album has the harmonica at all...ah well, enjoyed it while they had it.

That funny recurring sound in I Need You...what is that, a guitar maybe? Whatever it is, that sound SPEAKS TO ME. A lot of this album does, really.

Act Naturally is a funny parody of actors. If only it was really that easy to act naturally -- that's why we ironically train so hard to do it!

I've Just Seen A Face is the fastest they've been lyrically yet...neat.

Jimmy Fallon and Paul McCartney have a funny parody of Yesterday called Scrambled Eggs. Worth a listen!

Oh hey, this looks cool, all I need is -- OOOOHHHH NOOOO IT REQUIRES VIRTUAL REALITY!!! Not today, HTC Vive.....

I really enjoyed the two VR demoes I tried last year, but I'm not paying for VR yet and I'm not sure there's a prevailing theory/product for it yet either. Really hope it succeeds though!

Albums:
Please Please Me
With The Beatles
A Hard Day's Night
Beatles For Sale

1963 > 1964, basically.

So far it's all in chronological order for me. Eight Days A Week wasn't quite as catchy to me as any other top song from the other albums, though I do like the variation of balancing love and loneliness.

I've been the expert on a subject before and have been rejected from flexing that expertise before -- lost a potential theatre-job I still think I could have rocked. It happened though because I was a total unapologetic a****** to some of my friends, and it sucked -- one of the most embarrassing things I've dealt with as an adult. I really thought I was fighting the good fight, too. I was an a******, but I was one with reasoning behind me!

I did something that helped though: I stopped being an unapologetic a******. I removed myself too for a bit, but that's probably more optional. Now I'm staying the night and traveling with those old friends again for work, and we introduce each other to our other friends too. It took years and some proof of decency on my behalf over time because I betrayed my friend's expectations for respect, but things are very good again.

I say all that to highlight my point for Ulti: your expertise and knowledge may not be the reasons you've not been invited back. If being on the podcast matters to you, please understand that. Take what yo said and try not to respond bitterly about how funny you are on other people's shows like you'll make him jealous. Take what I challenged you on two months ago about your announced intentions for disruption and don't flip it into political smearing -- it's why I've blocked you since then until things get better (longterm). It sucks because we collectively have some sincere love for you, but none of this information is new to you either. You've been told before.

We know you provide some enjoyable content. Please understand why more people are finding it not worth it lately, and therefore understand why your example with Leonhart doesn't mirror your situation. Like...look at what all you added in your post between edits on post #43. You've lost restraint on how to treat other people, and it's hard to watch an old friend keep struggling to grasp that.

Beatles For Sale

Another good album, another similar album. They have sadder themes in this one though! They've had a lot of lovey-dovey talk with some woe-is-me tunes mixed in, but the first half of this album seems to deal with loss and departure more than usual...

...and now that I'm getting into the second half, okay, here's the love. It's just backweighted here. Cool.

Harmonica can be found a-harpin' in I'm A Loser and...that's it.

"Rock roll music" annoys me when Lennon shortens the phrase in Rock And Roll Music. This and the medley are covers, right? Gotta be covers. Covers are totally cool, but I'm just trying to figure out when something's all theirs and when it's inspired from somewhere else. Bands nowadays don't have multiple covers almost every album, so it's neat to see how they got their start.

I also feel jazz and blues inspirations throughout their albums so far...some of these patterns and call-and-repeat bits especially. Black people's music has been appropriated a bunch, I know, and then it's white people's sounds that became THE iconic sounds off of their hard work. I didn't expect this project to make me feel like approaching that subject, so, uh, that's neat.

I'll Follow The Sun is catchier than it should be.

I like the lay-ups Ringo threw to George during Honey Don't. It makes for some fun friendly moments.

Grampy Katz in: The Big Date

This one's got charm and a little frustration.

The goal's to clean up your room in time for a hot date. This mainly means clicking messy beds and timing how long you have meat in the oven, but it makes you feel hectic enough. The game feels unfair with how random it can be though. Right at the buzzer, a new piece of junk mail can fly in or your candle might go out. I had to adjust a picture frame seven times one play-through. She'll be sure to criticize you about your mess-ups too. Some date -- I don't see her bringing any wine for our empty wine glasses!

Please Please Me
With The Beatles
A Hard Day's Night

This album sometimes felt like it had a different...I dunno if production value or vibe or what is the best word, but I felt like this was built for a movie. That could just be confirmation bias though, and movies can have good soundtracks -- and this was good too! A Hard Day's Night, I'm Happy Just To Dance With You, and Can't Buy Me Love are a great trio of songs.

A Hard Day's Night

Hey, I used to have their movie poster on my bedroom wall! It was right along with the posters I actually wanted up -- pages and pages of stillshots from Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls.

https://loftcinema.org/files/2016/06/a-hard-days-night-poster1.jpg

Never saw the movie as far as I remember, but one of these Beatles movies influenced the longform-improvisation scene I studied in New York City. I understand this or another movie had a scene where somebody asked what they call their haircut, and a Beatle responded with "Arthur." Well, Del Close was creating this new performance style in Chicago at the time and he asked his team what they should call it. Somebody responded with "Harold" like the Beatles-joke, and now if you see a longform improv show then there's a decent chance you'll see a Harold run because it's become the standard in that field.

Anyway, that opening title track's too good -- no wonder the movie's named after it. After three albums, I'm also feeling like I prefer their faster-paced rocking style more than their slower ballads. Looking forward to the exceptions and changes in my expectations, but so far gimme the rock and roll!

Harmonica's featured in I Should Have Known Better...and is that a cowbell in You Can't Do That?! It's just funny to hear some of these sounds now in our era where the beat regularly drops for some mad electronica.

The Beatles have very mixed feelings on money! Sometimes they sing about how love's no substitute for money, and other times they don't care too much for money. I guess you can afford to be torn when you have infinite amounts of both.....

A Hard Day's Night:

Can't Buy Me Love
Any Time At All
You Can't Do That

I think it's very important to observe the years these albums were released, and the sheer amount of QUALITY music they were pumping out in their early careers, not to mention a crazy tour schedule. To me, that makes their early poppy stuff all the more impressive.

Fair, so perhaps the real evolution during this period was the rest of the industry. Both of these albums were in 1963 -- not a bad one-two combo.

Paul on bass, Ringo on Boys, George on Do You Wanna Know A Secret...bah. I'll get the hang of them soon enough!

With The Beatles

More of that classic pop-rock sound I expect from the Beatles! I don't notice much of an evolution yet from Please Please Me...give it time, I suppose. This album is somewhat ordered by its strongest to weakest songs...kicks off so good, then it wanders into other songs that generally just aren't quite on the same level.

More harmonica, but it's just Little Me this time. Is it getting phased out soon? Hmmmmm.

There's a fun second with the guitar in All My Loving...super-easy to breeze past, but I enjoy it.

Growing up, my dad was known by a lot of his friends and family for introducing them to the Beatles. It's funny now to realize he retired as a mail carrier and the Beatles have a song called Please Mister Postman.

Is this where the phrase Roll Over Beethoven comes from? Huh.

You Really Got A Hold On Me is the first clear example to me about imagining how women could go so crazy for them. John Lennon's clearly working his voice here, and it's great. Fun little love ballad.

With The Beatles:
It Won't Be Long
All I've Got To Do
All My Loving
You Really Got A Hold On Me
Don't Bother Me
Hold Me Tight
Money (That's What I Want)
Till There Was You
Roll Over Beethoven

You draw the two wheels you'd like to use to travel across an obstacle course. I recommend circular or triangular wheels with little divits for extra traction. My best time was 1:05...tried to get it lower, but oh well.

Didgerido

This is bad and it dead-ended me fast.

The controls fight against me about as much as anything I can think of. You know how using the Wind Waker wand works in LoZ:WW? Imagine that kind of system is your only way to move, and each song you play represents a different direction you can move or direction you can attack so you're expected to learn them. The game also tests you by making you move a little bit first before beginning.

So, you begin and the game says "focus." The screen then gets TV static all over and you can't see shit -- not yourself, not the background, not even an optical illusion like I thought it expected of me. There was no explanation of what to do either -- why am I here, what do I attack, where do I move, how dors the static work, etc.

To recap: awful awful control scheme and static taking over the screen without reason. The drum-based music was okay, but this is still a bad premise done poorly.

Please Please Me

First album! This is definitely the catchy early pop-rock sound I expected from them (and told myself I didn't like growing up). I like it though -- pretty easy to sing along with by the second listen-through thanks to their fun use of repetition. They sure like to sing about love! It should be interesting to see how far they deviate from this formula that got them started.....

I love the harmonica, so it's great to see they have more songs that use it than just Love Me Do (one of the first songs I learned to play). Chains, Please Please Me, There's A Place...it's definitely incorporated! It's a fun little way to break up a song and it works for them here.

Do You Want To Know A Secret caught me off-guard because I'm working on a show where a woman is speaking with lines directly from this song. I did the show last year too and knew it was a Beatles-song, but I never heard the song before...so after a year of hearing a young actress "say" the song without singing it or having music, it's a little unusual to me now!

And man, didn't realize Twist And Shout's one of their very first songs. Loved that scene in Ferris Bueller's Day Off!

So I'm still trying to mentally tie the artists with their voices and instruments. I think just off this album:

John Lennon: guitar. Sings in Anna, Chains, Ask Me Why, Please Please Me, Baby It's You, Do You Want To Know A Secret, There's A Place, and Twist And Shout

Paul McCartney: guitar. Sings in I Saw Her Standing There, Misery, Love Me Do, P.S. I Love You, and A Taste Of Honey.

George Harrison: guitar and harmonica. Sings in Boys.

Ringo Starr: drums. Sings in, uh, the background.

Please Please Me:
Twist And Shout
I Saw Her Standing There
Love Me Do
P.S. I Love You
Anna (Go To Him)
Chains
Please Please Me
Boys
A Taste Of Honey
Misery
Do You Want To Know A Secret
Baby It's You
There's A Place
Ask Me Why

RotoDefendo

Decent premise here of a one-button game where you defend your territory with your constantly-spinning gun. The double-triangles that come at double-speed are bullshit though...hard to get my high score past whenever they arrive. The music and power-ups are pretty cool at least.

Cool, so it sounds like I should stick Past Masters in after Revolver.

Good heads-up on Yellow Submarine, thanks!

I'll begin tomorrow, but in the meanwhile please help (Help!) me understand what albums I actually need to consider here. What I think works are:

Please Please Me
With the Beatles
A Hard Day's Night
Beatles for Sale
Help!
Rubber Soul
Revolver
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Magical Mystery Tour
The White Album
Yellow Submarine
Abbey Road
Let It Be

Does that pretty well cover it? Anything necessary with the remasters? Wikipedia has some other stuff like My Bonnie and Yesterday And Today...what about them? Anything else?

I was named after George Harrison when my mom heard Here Comes The Sun while pregnant with me. That said, I've never really listened to them that much before. It's time to finally learn more about my namesake and a worldwide cultural phenomenon.

Here's the goal: listen to all of their albums in order, rank the songs for each album, and rank the albums.

My main intentional experiences with the Beatles over the years were listening to the #1 hits on the album 1, George Harrison's Brainwashed-album, and having sex once during the movie Across The Universe (Strawberry Fields are fifteen or twenty minutes max, am I right?!). I also tried last month to make a Pandora station ONLY for Beatles-music, but that turned out weird...so yeah, I don't feel like I know them super well.

If the recent topic about people's favorite Beatles-song is any indication, this should be fun.

The Four Old Gods

I thought this would be a simple action-strategy game. It was, and I really enjoyed it.

You control four people who have different ranges and strengths of attack, plus a healer. You guard this crystal from hoards of baddies until a teleporter opens and you can leave. The thing I liked about this so much was that the attacks/healing was automatic and the game was in think-about-your-move mode until you hold down the space bar. It made planning easy and able to stop on a dime if I needed to reroute.

The music's bumpin' too. For the game only having one type of enemy, the song in the background made it feel intense. The game's not as hard as it was feeling sometimes, so...nice job with the illusion, developers.

I'd love to see this idea expanded on.
