Friday the 13th series beated (saving freddy vs jason for elm street watchthrough... which I think I already did not long ago when watching hellraiser, but I forget lmao, either way FvJ I've seen before)

After the last few movies from Manhattan and behind I gave any up hope of this franchise continuing to do horror at all but the Remake was actually pretty great, Jason's at his most intimating, actually showing some real intelligence for once, and it does a great job with retelling the original movies and calling back to it even while clearly doing something different, and frankly memorable. I was also surprised that one of the deaths happening, so overall I gotta say I'm impressed.

which is frankly a massive shock because the rest of the series is really just forgettable generic crap

also i already forget the entirety of Jason X despite it being the movie I saw before this one

All I can say is that personally speaking, I try to embody this as well, which means when I see someone say something that I think is ignorant and hurtful, I also backspace and retype my message half a dozen times to go from "Fuck you" to "I get why you feel that way but I think what you've just said is potentially missing... etc"

i can see viewing it that way. i'm not sure i agree it always has the intent of a threat, but like i said, no one should be changing political views because of online fighting, so i'm in support of anything that encourages people to not do that, and that doesn't promote that being a justifiable stance.

right again, I don't believe it's always an intent either but it's very much the message that comes across either way, and when it's used as often as it is - like we went over before about burnout - people are gonna get fed-up with respectability

well, again, practically speaking, i just don't think that's how people are. in an ideal world, sure. but in reality, most people who "don't get" a topic are just gonna be like "yo i don't get this" because people mostly default to just saying whatever they think. you wanna change that, sure, okay. noble cause. i've gotten into enough shit for doing what turbo did that i've built up the habit of trying to start off a lot more politely but i just don't expect everyone to be there.

like, the very fact that someone "doesn't get" a topic means they also don't get why people would be upset about them saying they don't get it. so it kind of prohibits them from even taking the step of thinking "i should be very careful how i say this". y'know?

I think this take is rather one-sided then, because people are allowed to be ignorant because that's humans "in reality" but we have to tut-tut at the equal reality that if you go off spouting ignorance in support of bigotry then yeah you're gonna get "piled" on. Is that ideal? No, I absolutely agree it'll make the individual feel attacked, but why expect everyone incensed by said ignorance to silence themselves because others will have it covered? People naturally want their opinions to be heard so if you don't choose your words right there will be a blowback.

You're putting too much of the onus on everyone else, a large group of individuals with different levels of skin in the game, over the actual instigator's responsibility to choose their words. You say that you have this feeling because you can relate to puns which is entirely reasonable... but that's a bias that offers one-sided leniency.

This next line goes hand-in-hand with my point on putting the onus of level-headed debate on one end. This is respectability politics and it fundamentally does not work in a vast online society where people can always pick-up whatever ammunition they want to believe what they want.

i prefer to not try to disclaim things, even if only because the people who would get upset about whatever statement follows, won't care about your disclaimer anyway, so it's not useful anyway.

A bit more sharply I feel the need to point out an explanation for why the "left leaning" excuse is met with such hostility, because it's often used as a cudgel warning people to stop saying things the "left-leaning" person doesn't have to bother taking the sincerity to understand, or else they'll personally go change their views and work against your rights. It's a threat, and I can't blame someone calling their bluff to say "do it then".

The real issue about "I'm left-leaning you guys" is that being left-leaning has zero relevance towards issues of bigotry. Dave Chappelle isn't some right-wing conservative, "left-leaning" individuals are perfectly capable of being ignorant towards the issues of racism and transphobia - just ask the UK where TERFism quite clearly crosses political lines.

It's a weak argument to use your "leaning" status as some accreditation of an understanding you quite blatantly do not hold.

his story about the trans friend was nothing but an "I have a ____ friend" human shielding and making a grotesque false claim to paint her own community as her murderers

He doesn't give the slightest shit about online harassment or what Daphne personally went through - the man saw her a grand total of 2 times, she wasn't a close friend, just someone he was happy to use to give him cover in a professional capacity. If he gave a single fuck about online harassment leading people to suicide he would take note of the fact this a strong issue within the trans community overall due to the transphobic hatred he perpetuates, instead directing anger and hatred towards trans folks by, again *FALSELY* painting a vicious story that trans people got her killed. Trans folk are the ones who have to put up with the shit he incensed with his fans as the news media and his own stans "defend" him online by calling trans people murderers now.

If he cared about what Daphne went through, he would not have made up a story centred entirely around protecting him rather than looking up what's actually going on with her life from losing her job, getting a divorce, losing custody of her child, and yes, being met with transphobia regularly throughout her day to day life. No you don't get to hear any of that story, instead you get something made up that her family outright denies was a factor. That doesn't matter to Dave though, he only had one point to make, to tell trans people to shut the fuck up and he was happy to make up a dangerous story to do it.

Nobody is especially victimized in comedy. That's why it's called comedy.

This is quite frankly an idiotic statement brought on by a privileged kid that's never been effected by negative stereotypes. Dangerous comedy exists and it's hard to believe you've lived passed the early 2000s not to see that in the days where trans folks paraded on Maury or Springer being "exposed" as traps for entertainment, or fictional media like Ace Ventura where the villain is just a massive "SHE'S GOT A PENIS, GROSSS" punchline, or jesus fuck that arc of Garrison having a sex change. Even if unintentional, all these negative portrayals in the media for the purpose of "comedy" has the direct effect making trans people afraid to come out, or to even explore who they are.

I'm telling you this from personal fucking experience. I used to hide my own gender exploration back from early childhood, being riddled with embarrassment when discovered and reflexively denying anything going on. Even though I'm from a rather accepting family, the media I consumed was my only understanding of the trans identity - gross, perverted men disguising themselves to be something they're not, and this was very widely accepted as "comedy", and this is how I understood others around me to believe - fuck, just look at the shit MYC had to put up with here in B8's early days. It wasn't until many years I finally got to understand transness, detached from the stereotypes, and identified my own issues which I wish to god I could have done so openly in my youth.

These days Dave Chappelle is straight-up regurgitating anti-trans talking points, agreeing with them... and that's supposed to be the joke? People are actively using these exact same points to legislate against us, get the fuck out of here with this shit just being silly jokes
