I retain my belief the game is way overhated as is Emil who I feel just makes a really wimpy first impression. Gameplay is still clunky tho buuut I do love playing Emil with +20 aerial combos and all them elemental physical arts - I like monsters but lordy lordy capturing them is such a frustrating tug 'o war with the AI teammates. ToS1 gameplay lol you really gotta detach them from the idea of "playable characters" and just accept them as party slot alternatives to help you grind a buncha monsters levels with. You really gotta accept that they're practically just guest characters.

ToS1 cast still has great characterizations, especially as I mentioned it in my ToS1 update my appreciation of Regal improves tenfold. It's hard for Sheena to top her original appearance but she's still one of the most prominent in DotNW. Zelos samey with less presence, Raine's intelligence really shines, Genis isn't hateful this time, Colette is pure lighthearted goofball now without any melodrama secrets, and Presea is a bit more open but still not so important. Lloyd... he gets back to being fine near the end but god damn if he isn't trash most of the game. Yeah yeah there's some reason for it but... nahhh dude you REALLY could've done a lot better than not explaining ANYTHING going on, like wtf you can't even tell your friends you're not out committing massacres? suuuure bud

My appreciation for stories often hinges on its antagonist cast and Richter is finally a legit, cool big bad that has legit aims to save the world in his own way instead of cartoon villainy and conquest. He's kinda like my current top ranked big bad Dhaos with his ending reveal except he fixed the main problem with Dhaos I mentioned in the ToP review - Richter actually holds a strong presence through the course of the game. Alice is a bit more of a shallow love but very much a love because hell yeah dom sadist girls, she's a horrible person grown from a hurtful upbringing (I unfortunately missed the conclusion of due to missing a chapter 5 step), but I just enjoy her hate for the world and everyone in it.

Going through this series playthough up to now I really don't understand the idea that ToS2 has some monumentally horrible story as often highlighted - being turned off from the start I get it, don't like a story of a meek boy's self-discovery okay... but many entries I've played to now have just been rather worthless, frustrating, or unfulfilling in their plots so I just don't get where the depths of DotNW's hate comes from.

Too sleepy rn to get into Emil and Marta comments annnnd I'm kinda gonna be busy in the next couple days but I gotta leave it here for nowww. For now I'll just say DotNW is very much a story of self discovery for both Emil & Marta (as if the heavy-handed chapter 1 didn't make that obvious lmao) but it's one I very much come to enjoy as they find themselves.

side-note Emil/Marta sooo much better than Kyle/Reala driving Destiny 2 through complete one-sided blindness

As a film franchise I just can't say Star Wars anymore, haven't even been bothered to go to the theatres for them in a while - as MCU is basically the only thing that gets me to the theatres so yeah it seems like a pretty clear takeover.

As overall franchises extending beyond movies I can still hype SW at least... the lack of LucasArts still hurts for gaming buuut TV's doing well!

I just started playing Pokemon GO again, first time since Summer 2016. I'm already sunburned with a tick bite, XD. If anyone still plays, I'd be happy to friend with you, even if my interest burns out in another week or so.

Of all the changes small and big, the one I've appreciated most is that I don't feel like I'm wasting my limited Pokeball supply. I'm not tossing ten balls at a freaking Pidgey. Most creatures have been pleasant enough to capture in a few balls or scamper away before I waste resources.

*shrug* That's even quoting a scene where nobody has even blamed Luke, it's his very own freak-out at himself. Luke is the only one going on about blame because he feels guilty, the rest of the cast wants to move ahead and are then rightfully repulsed by his self-centered ranting after 10,000 lives were just lost by the events

I think you're forgetting what Luke was like immediately post-Akzeriuth, everyone else was morning a devastating tragedy and he was still continuing to be a loudmouthed asshole focused on absolving himself. The rest of the party was focused on just what happened then immediately on what to do next - after understanding what Luke had done Jade literally says there's little point discussing what could've been done differently then rightfully walks away from Luke's rantings of denial. Nobody even accuses him of anything, Luke just whines about them refusing to absolve him. There just isn't even any "ganging up on Luke" or guilting him, he does it all himself.

Hell Mieu stays behind to cheer him up and relate to him and Luke is again just an abusive asshole in return.

After getting to Yulia City he's confronted by Asch and Tear still tries to protect Luke's feelings, then Luke's out of commission so the rest of the party goes on helping Asch with what to do next.

Quest 64 has no story beyond "hey, walk through these areas to get to the end." If you consider that story-driven, then every classic NES or arcade side-scroller is story-driven. Hey, how about the story in Donkey Kong, guys? Stupid princess rescue tropes, amirite?

Like IIRC even people like Tear and Jade are on decent terms with Van immediately prior to Akzeriuth, to the extent that they worked together with him to plan their next moves

between Van's release from prison to Akzeriuth, Van is with the party for a single scene - Jade (noting it uncomfortable to speak in front of Van) makes a plan to send a decoy ship while travelling by land and Van just says I'mma go on that decoy ship and Jade responds "k, not like I have a choice". Guy & Tear are the only other non-Lukes in this scene and they don't say anything (Tear's only lines are "Van..." and "Colonel...")

the next time you see Van is alone as Luke & Ion

IIRC during this Baticul-Akzeriuth portion Luke's criticized for not deciding anything by himself and just doing whatever Van says

Honestly, at the time I finished Abyss, I wasn't even totally sure I liked it, but it just stuck with me and I've come to appreciate it more and more with time.

I kinda have this going on with Destiny 2 - I've got problems with it but so far throughout my Tales series playthrough it just sticks in my mind more than most and not to just use the same word but yeah appreciate it as I play more Tales games

As someone who hasnt played it, it seems like there is a degree of hatred for everything and everyone in that game that makes it seem like it may indeed be the worst. It is somewhat telling that the defences are mainly Well, everybody is absolutely insufferable for a very long time, but then.... Despite that I kind of want to play it! Seems like it is memorable and notable.

honestly for me tho the main event everyone's talking about isn't really that far in (not that it's super early) and everything after that point is just whatever

i recently played Tales of the Tempest which was pretty average across the board - but it was short so it was fine... outside of the large overworld maps with a terrible random encounter rate & battle speed but hey that's not story!

Luke is one of the few shitty characters at the start I'm actually fine with by the end... I think mainly because how much more of the game there still is post-Akzeriuth that I kinda forget about early Luke by the end (not that he doesn't still slip-up with being dumb, but I also appreciate he didn't instantly 360)
