I think 4K / 60 should be OK if your HDMI version supports it. My understanding is that the higher refresh rates in 2.1 wont work in Linux. There was a recent effort to fix it the consortium shot down.

So if you're going to build a HTPC or build a gaming PC and connect it to your TV, you may want to consider Windows for those reasons, though I think a Linux PC connected to the TV with DisplayPort and a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter will do high refresh rates just fine if memory serves.

tried Xfce and KDE, Nvidia and AMD, X11 and Wayland, HDMI then tried a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter

nothing worked right, everything was either choppy, had screen tearing, or something was messed up with the resolution

so I just use Windows whenever I want to hook my laptop up to my TV

Call me crazy, but I don't really see what benefit this offers over just using a classic centralized forum paradigm (at least in something like CE's case where it's just one community as opposed to a decentralized Mastodon-like situation)

Can't speak for Bethesda games, but mod support for Linux can be weird

Like on Civilization V for example, a number of Windows-compatible mods just don't work specifically because Linux handles case-sensitivity in file names very differently
