Finished Season 2 of Discovery. Been absolutely going on a tear with it lately. Lots of time on my hands...

The ending of season 2 felt like a necessary, but still very cheap way to package Discovery into the backstory of TOS. Was let down by it a bit.

But I've heard that Season 3 and 4 are much more free to chart Discovery's own course, so that should still be fun

I mostly agree with this. TNG season 3 is probably the easiest place to start with older Trek if you just want to dip your toe in the water and get a sense whether Trek is for you. You'd also be fine just googling a list of best TNG episodes and watching those. It's not a very serialized show so it's fine to skip around for the most part.

If you want to check out a modern Trek show Strange New Worlds is probably your best bet.

TOS is good. I think the writing and performances hold up well for being such an old show. But it is a show that's more than a half century old. If you're used to watching TV and movies from the 60s you might start there but otherwise it might be a little too jarring. Definitely worth checking out though if you do watch other Star Trek and find that it clicks with you.

Discovery's first few episodes are...jarring to me. And I have several questions LMAO.

Strange New Worlds is pretty awesome, too! Doesn't seem to make Starfleet seem like they're explicitly NOT a military organization, though.

Lots of landing parties beaming down in all black tactical gear is kind of lame haha. I like the ship uniforms :p
