Sure, but that would have been risky - tranquilizer darts don't take effect instantaneously. I can kind of understand why someone would have a problem with eating animals, but I don't think it makes sense to say we can't defend our young from other animals.

Is there any species alive that we aren't capable of killing? Perhaps some in the deep oceans that we simply can't reach, but if we could reach them we could kill them. I would say that makes us the greatest predators on the earth. It's not that rare for two predator species to fight each other.

Humans are better engineers than beavers, at least when we learn the skill, so beavers aren't necessarily what you might call apex engineers. Unlike humans as predators.

Yeah, it's possible for people to get perverted ideas in a number of ways. Those people would be one example of that.

Of course, their reaction to the food isn't a great example of how people react to cannibalism, because it would have been stage-props and not real human meat.

If you kill an animal in self-defense I don't see any sensible reason why you can't eat it. It would be wrong to do so to a human because animals who eat their own kind are low, and we know that because humans have a natural disgust reaction to cannibalism. But to do it to another animal, that's just nature.

Lamejokealt, would you say it's morally acceptable for me to kill and eat a carnivorous animal? After all, by killing it not only do I sustain myself, but I create a net decrease in the number of animals who are killed and eaten.

(FWIW it's not that hard to measure--it's hard to figure out how much any one individual privilege matters, but we can see how they combine together by looking at how far the average man/woman gets in society).

I think that's a fine suggestion, but I imagine you would still run into the problem of weighting different privileges, unless I misunderstand what you mean by "How far people get in society".

For instance, while men make more money on average and are over-represented in high-ranking positions like CEOs or political office, women have a longer life expectancy and lower rates of untimely death.

metroid composite posted...

But if that's the approach we're taking, we shouldn't complain about solutions. Scholarships for, say, women in science is a solution to the problem that there has historically been a gender imbalance towards men in science fields. Similar approaches to fix gender imbalances have worked in other fields in the past (Law school used to be very male dominated, is now relatively gender balanced). Same idea with stuff like girls-only computer camps for highschoolers--they exist to try and encourage more enrollment at the university level, which has been a recent problem.

I don't think that quotas make things fairer, but it depends on what your goals are. To me it's not necessarily a problem if one sex is over-represented in a specific field. If there are certain policies or barriers that make it harder for the other sex to enter that field, then that I would agree is unfair. But the sensible solution would be to remove the unfair policy itself, rather than to add another unfair policy as a counterweight.

But even if you disagree, it can't be denied that sex-specific camps or scholarships or quotas are a form of privilege based on sex. That just means that sex-specific privileges aren't inherently a bad thing.

I don't think it's only black men who are shot and killed much more often than women by the police, I think this is true for people of all colours. and women also have the privilege of priority seating on lifeboats.

Do you think there's any particular relevance to the question of which sex is broadly more privileged? To answer that question you would have to not only try and find whose list was longer, as you say, but you'd have to weight the different privileges too. That would open you up to a lot of subjectivity, but I would argue the two aforementioned ones are some of the biggest privileges of all. There are women who are alive thanks to those privileges when if they were male they'd be dead.

But I don't see how the question could possibly be productive. If you want to make things fairer, the best method is just to find anything unfair and then try to fix it, as far as I can tell.

For all that yes, men can sometimes get small advantages just for being male. (Like grad school applications--if you have a male sounding name on an identical resume you get a small edge; you have to actually get to the point where you have a strong resume, though).

Yes, but women can also get small advantages just for being female. Sex-specific programs and scholarships are an easy example of that. Privilege is a legitimate concept but the politicized ideas of it that assume it's only one way, like "male privilege at the cost of female oppression" are just wrong.

Germany is pretty over-the-top when it comes to policing and censoring Swastikas though so I can believe something like this would happen. What makes it the most unpleasant is that she's this ancient senile old woman and they still arrested her for something so dumb.

I think it's kind of bad, probably my least-favorite Fire Emblem. The mechanics and the map design are really archaic and that turns it into a drag. It's too easy even on the highest difficulty, to the point of being mind-numbing early on.

It is a lot better than any recent Fire Emblem game narratively though, for what little that's worth.

George is probably my favourite character still in this contest so I'll try and give my reasoning.

I think George is a good character because he really does behave like an animal (or a child), in that most of what he does is spur of the moment and for it's own sake. A lot of the conflict in his stories comes from that even though he's essentially well-meaning too, which isn't something a lot of fiction gets right but it is true to life. Between those two things he's a believable character and a lot of his stuff is funny too. A good example of that is in one of the books, where he's in the hospital and he gets high on ether and then knocks himself out. I also like the story from the old show where The Man in the Yellow Hat is gone when he wakes up and he thinks that The Man is angry with him so he decides to leave home. There's a real sense of childish playfulness to that, and I think it helps that his stories move from one thing to the next without too much apparent structure. That's a bit like childhood too.

I bet a lot of the people who voted him up did it out of nostalgia though. To some extent I grew up with him too. I saw the old shorts in school and the new series started when I was still a kid.

That's a reasonable perspective. I think my hang-up is that I would hate it if someone downvoted a character I really liked but that they didn't know, which probably happened to Danny Phantom and some others. But I can admit that it is just a personal hang-up.
