Franziska Schneider, 98, was out and about on the streets of Berlin with her grandson Alex Schneider, 40. Alex was pushing her wheelchair to help her get some fresh air.

While passing a traffic accident, the Schneiders came upon four police officers cordoning off the area.

Franziska, who suffers from age-related mental illnesses, mistook the uniforms for Nazi uniforms and quickly performed the Nazi salute and said "Heil Hitler."

The police were extremely upset by this and arrested her for making an "obscene and hateful gesture in public."

The charges were dismissed fifty minutes later, after they'd found a safe way to transport the woman to the police station.

Doing a Nazi salute is LITERALLY PROTECTED BY THE GERMAN CONSTITUTION and has NEVER been illegal at any point after WW2. Liberals are the fucking worst indeed. She was expressing freedom of speech and in context, did NOTHING wrong.

(in all fairness though, arresting a 98 y/o [shame on you for posting "elderly" in place of "98 y/o"] senile, disabled person for this is stupid, regardless of the law. For fuck's sake. I mean I'm not going to read the article whether or not there is more information in it that might make this not asinine, but still, FOR FUCK'S SAKE needs to be a meme for responses to shit like this...)

The link doesn't even take me to this story. I think you linked to BBC's broader "Europe" news feed and so it doesn't show up as the first story at this point.

Germany is pretty over-the-top when it comes to policing and censoring Swastikas though so I can believe something like this would happen. What makes it the most unpleasant is that she's this ancient senile old woman and they still arrested her for something so dumb.
