My Physics C teacher told me that when he had to defend his thesis or dissertation or whatever (it was for a masters not a PhD I think) he wrote his defense so that it would have a bunch of traps in it. So he'd exclude obvious bits from his defense with the knowledge that his superiors would question him on it to see if he knew what he was talking about.

Whenever this happened he had giant stacks of slides prepared to painstakingly go through it (it was before PowerPoint I guess, I think they just used a projector). They only had so much time to question him and additionally whenever he embarrassed one like that it would shut them up for the rest of the defense.

The way he described it all, the professors/superiors or whatever really take advantage of you when you're doing that program and they liked to try and fuck you over one last time before you became 'on their level,' so it was justified

Wow, at least in my program, that seems so unnecessary.

In my Master's defense, we spent the whole time just discussing the possibilities of my study. Perhaps cause education isn't as "hard-sciency" I am able to talk through any concerns feom my committee.

I imagine my phd defense will be similar.

Oh yeah he was doing STEM stuff, so that may be part of it

He also did the whole thing in like a fraction of the time most students do it in (like 1/3 or 1/4 or something crazy) because he really wanted the teaching position at this school. So maybe he was paranoid. Plus he claims he only got like two hours of sleep per night toward the end of it and now his sleeping schedule is permanently fucked. He said there was one person he desperately wanted to kill but he didn't because then he wouldn't be able to finish the thesis

My problem with Overwatch's design focus being extremely team-based is that it seems to be a design philosophy that attracts the worst of the worst of players to its community. It's great if you're really in to serious team-work, I'm sure, but clearly just one person not 'playing optimally' can kill a team and also the team's attitudes (I recall seeing on /v/ that there's drama about Blizzard banning people for "one-tricking" and "not playing the meta" when their teammates complain about it).

By having 8-12 players instead of 6, TF2 devalues the power of each individual player and allows players to pick up the slack of others if they're skilled enough. Personally I much prefer that philosophy; teamwork is obviously not as essential to the game, but it absolutely still exists and a united team will still hold their 'fortress' much better than a divided one.

By one-dimensional I didn't really intend to refer to personalities or anything but rather the character as a whole. Due to the wide variety of characters there's clearly a lot less work put into each one. IMO they often end up feeling like tools to use more than actual characters. I don't have the exact statistic with me, but an example is that TF2 has something like 3-5x as many voiced lines as Overwatch with less than half the amount of characters as the latter. In Overwatch you're going to hear a ton of "Heroes Never Die" and "[angry Japanese screeching]" all the time with little variation. It's good from a competitive gameplay perspective and Blizzard obviously wanted an e-sport, but they also clearly sacrificed on characterization, variety, and overall casual fun.

From the perspective of someone who's been playing TF2 for a few years:

The thing about Overwatch is that the lore and dialogue is cringey, a lot of the character designs are either boring or overly-quirky/one-dimensional, and the fanbase is a bunch of fucking assholes. They somehow grabbed the atmosphere of MOBAs and stuck it into an FPS.

The actual gameplay can be fun (though imo the maps aren't very good) but it really is a team-based game so if someone's subpar it can drag the whole team down, which contributes to the atrocious fanbase.

It isn't like TF2 where the game design is more akin to a bunch of mavericks working to a common goal and being supported by one or two classes. Instead the game is hard-designed to be team-based with not much flanking happening and a lot of team shield/buff abilities and such. They've talked about their design philosophy, and I see what they've tried to do, but I think TF2 remains the better game by a lot.

You can argue that most of the anger and 'meta play' stuff only comes out in ranked Overwatch, but on the other hand I think Casual isn't particularly fun either. If you don't have good team organization then it can potentially devolve into practically a Team Deathmatch except there's just six players and the maps aren't made for you to do very much roaming.

TBH there was a bit of Fallout 4 that I really enjoyed. Some of the map was super pretty and I remember coming up to an old building with a Mr Handy that the people who used to be their set as "just be" for its happiness parameters so it just floated around yelling "groovy." It was cute and I was excited to make that place my base.

But whenever you go to like 80% of the quests in the game, everything about it is trash and you're reminded that the protagonist has a set voice and no RP options

Also the robot despawned >:(

Dio calls it his "world of stopped time". Other people with similar powers can percieve/move within it with limited success.

Stands are psychic/spiritual in nature, so its not hard science.

Think of Dio accessing an overlapping dimension, superimposed over base reality. While inside he can move around and manipulate the world of the base reality. It doesn't make for stopped time to be...timed. So it would make sense that Dio is "kicked out" of the "stopped dimension" when his time is up.

But again how does he see/hear

It's fine for magic/soul power to be involved. That let's you handwave just about anything imo. But The World's power is supposedly explicitly Stopping Time, which just makes no sense.

No because what if another show does it? Like My Hero Academia where quirks are supposed to somehow be scientific/evolutionary? I need a general theory of how such a power would work in such a show.

Currently I think time only appears to be stopped, and in reality you have something akin to Speed Force, so you're basically moving and thinking so quickly that it seems to you as though time is stopped. That also explains why you can move things as though they're ragdolls, since your super high acceleration means you have an extreme amount of force at your disposal.

I mean, DIO didn't exactly go to college or anything

It explains pulling the bullets out of the air better than 'stopped time' does since your acceleration would overpower any force or velocity tied to the bullets

So in Stardust Crusaders, DIO controls The World, which he believes is able to stop time.

I get it's just an anime, but I cannot stop thinking about how powers like these are supposed to work.

If time stops, how do you still see? Light should stop too. So you'd see either a still image, nothing, or a super blurry image. And how does interacting with others work? Plus once time stops, the air and the Earth and the galaxy and everything stop, so shouldn't you fucking eject away from the Earth and/or get shredded by the air or whatever?
