Doe 04/13/21 2:03:35 PM #12 | I didn't like it. It's great looking graphically, that's my best praise. I'm an old veteran of SCP so the lore wasn't too interesting or original to me. The gameplay is not fun. It doesn't feel particularly more advanced than Alan Wake. It's not satisfying for your main gun to be a peashooter, and a force push doesn't make up for it. The first boss in the game was fucking dreadful. I got a headache when I played it. I think part of that is the horrible terrible map layout and navigation. --- |

They were used during a defensive war against military production targets. Going by the same logic as that infographic, it would be Abraham Lincoln for waging civil war and allowing tactics like the March to the Sea. The same mind that things something isn't immoral solely because it is different from theft. The initial claim by anti-pirates is typically that piracy is wrong because it's theft. The assertion of wrongness comes those opposed to it, not the pro-pirates trying to revel in evil or something. It's already been refuted that piracy is the theft of an object. Its now on you to show that piracy is immoral for some other reason. --- |

Doe 04/12/21 4:51:00 PM #126 | tote_all posted... So... if the ride isn't full, it's okay to sneak in for free in your mind? No, the owner can always kick you out because land is a quantifiable, physical, limited thing. It has nothing to do with whether you're enjoying the exhibit. You might not even know it's a museum, you just wandered in drunk looking for a bathroom, the owner can still ask you to leave even if you're not taking in the galleries and exhibits. --- |
Topic | I have never seen a good argument for why "piracy" is immoral. |
Doe 04/12/21 4:34:06 PM #107 | Guide posted... This topic is so fucking tired. There is no situation where you can reduce somebody's "projected income" except by not being part of the demographic expected to buy the product. The task of projecting how many sales a game might get is the burden of the creator, not consumers. Someone else laboring unilaterally without your input cannot, under any circumstance, compel you to later compensate them. I've said in this topic before: refusing to treat IP law as a sacred foundation of society may weaken the feasibility of selling digital commodities, but it is not worth twisting reality to suit the needs of commodity consumption. --- |

Doe 04/12/21 4:21:09 PM #78 | Giant_Aspirin posted... lending my physical copy of a game to friends and family = not making a copy = not stealingSo if I buy a copy of a book from an author, then 1 by 1 I lend it to every other literate person on Earth, it's no problem. Doe 04/12/21 4:18:20 PM #71 | Pogo_Marimo posted... Books and software both require effort to make. Someone has to be smart enough or talented enough to know how to make them, then spend years making them. Because of the effort involved, we consider the output of this effort "Intellectual Property". Intellectual Property is a concept modern societies use in order to encourage the production of non-physical commodities like software, designs, inventions, novels, movies, ect. by allowing the owner of the Intellectual Property to profit from them at their sole discretion.>conflating morals with economic ethics --- |

Doe 04/12/21 4:12:14 PM #62 | Giant_Aspirin posted... no. but you did steal their IP by gaining access to it without their permission.Reminder from the OP: laws as written are not a substitute for moral justification. How the government defines copyright or IP is irrelevant to whether pirating a game is morally wrong. Giant_Aspirin posted... what about situations where the writer is given performance based compensation? ie bonus / etc paid out based on # of copies sold? Doe posted... Of course you'll say "but that makes selling digital goods as commodities unfeasible." And that's true, but it's irrelevant. There are alternative ways to fund artistic production, like public arts funding or kickstarters. --- |

Doe 04/12/21 4:08:52 PM #56 | Giant_Aspirin posted... it's taking away a potential customer because you just acquired a copy for free without consent from the owner.Potential sales don't exist. There are just sales. If I was going to go to your museum but a billboard for a theme park caught my eye and I went there instead, should the museum be able to sue the theme park for damages? Obviously not. You have the right to remove someone from your land if you don't want them there. That extends to people not paying to access your private property. Land is a limited physical quantity and someone taking up space in an exhibit or ride is denying that space to other people and the property owner. --- |

Doe 04/12/21 3:59:57 PM #46 | Pogo_Marimo posted... And, for the utter love of all things holy, since people on this board don't understand how analogies fucking work, let me clarify: All that changes when you switch the selling of stolen labor versus the consuming of stolen labor is the scale. You are not allowed to take the results of someone else's labor without permission even if it is not depriving them of a physical object. That's IP theft, where you falsely claim to be the creator of a work. Piracy is when that writer sells a word document of his book, and then the purchaser leaves the word doc they purchased somewhere where others can access it. In that scenario, the writer has already been compensated. Of course you'll say "but that makes selling digital goods as commodities unfeasible." And that's true, but it's irrelevant. There are alternative ways to fund artistic production, like public arts funding or kickstarters. --- |

Doe 04/12/21 3:49:50 PM #31 | Tenlaar posted... Bullshit argument that doesn't apply in any other regard. "He wouldn't have bought a car anyway" doesn't make stealing a car okay.If I don't have the money to buy your car, but I have a button that spontaneously generates a replica of your car while leaving your actual car perfectly in tact, what harm has been done to you? --- |
Topic | I have never seen a good argument for why "piracy" is immoral. |
Doe 04/12/21 3:47:27 PM #24 | Giant_Aspirin posted... the key that decimates your "theft of property" argument is the concept of "intellectual property". even though physical objects are not being transferred from one owner to another, theft is still going on because you're giving yourself access to something the owner hasn't agreed to.How is downloading a game infringing on the maker's "intellectual property?" Am I infringing their intellectual property if I play on a friend's computer, or use their account? Am I infringing if I watch an uncommentated playthrough of a game? What if it's a visual novel? --- |
