It probable could have been structured better, mostly because (IMO) the entire time after that you just want to get back to it and it takes a bit too long to get there. Not that the part in between is bad, it's just not what you are waiting for at that moment.

I think I would have liked it better if you could choose to play as Ellie or Abby after the prologue and you unlock the epilogue after beating two campaigns. The only awkward stuff I can think of is the Scars get their proper intro in Ellie's campaign (most would choose Ellie first anyway) and the boss fight in the theater. If they were separate though people could progress through the game however they wanted which I think would solve a lot of complaints about the pacing.

Yeah I thought it was great. Big improvement from the first game gameplay wise. Playing it hit and run style is so freaking fun. I always thought the first games gameplay was pretty average and this goes way beyond that.

Story is more ambitious which I overall liked but not as smooth as the first game. Really my only issue was the huge cliffhanger after Ellie Day 3 felt a bit cheap.

I think they could have still launched a cinematic universe after Batman Begins and TDK if they really wanted to. Superman being known to the world after the events of those movies could probably work. Especially since a theme of those movies were escalation anyway. Arrow followed a similar trajectory but that always was a cheesy CW show so people were fine with the sort of retconning that show did.

But TDKR killed it. I think that was designed on purpose. Ledger died. Bale and Nolan did one movie to wrap it up and they were done. There was no point launching a cinematic universe from them at that point.

The other issue really is that Iron Man always had MCU roots in with its design. The Nolan movies never did. It was always going to be something thought of after the fact. But tbh yeah I think Warner Bros would have paid the big bucks to keep Bale and Ledger around for more movies because of how crazy successful TDK was.

It's not unique to America. Some games from Japan and Taiwan are bleaker than anything in TLOU2. Corpse Party and Detention are two examples I've personally played.

The next gen console GPU's are better but they're targeting 4k so it should hold up fine as long as that continues to be the case. Probably might need to use DLSS to use Ray Tracing as well.

That is a tiny SSD though which might be a hassle.

I'm just waiting for the cracks to show with this game and I still haven't found them. The concept just seems too bonkers to work out well. But this guy spent a few hours with the game looking for recycled side quests and characters but couldn't find any yet. He found the wife of his intro character randomly in the world. He went to the place where an NPC was said to be begging for money at that time and sure enough he was there.

The game sounds like a really open immersive sim sandbox. I'm sure there will be a cost somewhere (I don't think there will be much of a story tbh) but it's all sounding great to me.

Yeah it's a tricky situation to be in since some things work well (Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn) and some don't (Joker, Luthor, Affleck leaving etc.)

They're rebooting Batman which is a smart decision I think. Honestly they probably shouldn't really worry about crossovers until they sort out Batman and Superman again. When all the parts are working well then they can worry about crossovers that build up to stuff. A solid thing like the MCU probably is out of the question now.

Not worrying about the cinematic universe opens up stuff like Joker anyway. Maybe that's what they should go for. Their own thing.

The Dark Knight Rises was specifically made by Nolan to cut off any potential for him being asked to come back. It was most certainly a finale. Once Ledger died any cinematic universe launching off of the Nolan movies died with him.

Funnily enough GOTG3 has been Disney's biggest fumble with the MCU so far since that movie should have been pretty much done by now. Now they've gotta wait until Gunn is done with The Suicide Squad.

Can someone clarify this for me - clearly Ellie doesn't actually know that she was going to get sacrificed for the possibility of a cure right? No one actually stopped to ask her. She does say herself (I think) that she would have wanted to do it, but I just find it weird that no one asked. Was it Marlene(?) in the first game? I supposed you could put it down to being kind of cowardly in a way? Obviously they can't tell her or the whole Joel's lie thing doesn't make sense, but I just find that part interesting/a little odd.

The Fireflies probably didn't see much of a point since from their perspective since she didn't have a choice either way. Just get it over with while she's already unconscious. Easier than dealing with a scared girl if it came to that. Ellie didn't know until Joel told her though no. I'm sure she was suspicious about it as soon as she woke up however.

Marlene did want to handle it better I think. That's the impression I had in TLOU2 when she even wanted Joel brought into the conversation.

And yeah Ellie would have given her life up. I thought that back in the first game. She has survivors guilt and wanted her life to have meaning. I still think a lot of her development in this game is still reconciling with that.

I dunno if I'd say Ellie is worse. We only really saw the end of Abby's revenge story followed by the beginning of her redemption. Abby was ruthless towards Scars and was one of the top killers for the Wolves. Ellie goes through the trauma of losing Joel, spends three days in Seattle being a monster and is traumatized for years over it.

Jeff AKA Snoopy posted...
Yes, he grew. We see actually the character arc Abby goes through is similar to what Joel went through. That being said, he literally mass murders and stops a potential cure due to his own selfishness. He also says he would do it again.

And yet Abby's Dad couldn't answer if he'd kill Abby for the cure either. Saving Ellie humanized Joel into being a better person in the long term. They're just all characters stuck in a shitty situation who handle it in poor ways really.

I dont think they did a good job with Abby.

by the end I only wanted Ellie not to kill her for the sake of Ellie

Abby was a much more awful person than pretty much anyone else in the game, in my opinion. she deserved to die... I just didnt want It to happen the way they set it up

game would have been much better without the Santa Barbara stuff

I dunno was she? Her Dad was about to make the biggest progress on the cure. Her Dad was a nice guy and she had a pretty great life at the Fireflies. Joel took that away from her. She had to then go work for the shitty WLF faction and be stuck in a war for several years. She basically just had that, her desire for revenge and a failing relationship with Owen. Then she finally got what she wanted and it changed nothing for her. Just like Joel and Ellie she finally finds something worse living and fighting for with Lev.

I think Santa Barbara was needed because both Abby and Ellie needed to learn to let go of their hate because it was just ruining their lives. Abby had that in the theater when she let Ellie go despite her killing the guy she loved and several of her friends. Ellie didn't have that closure. She didn't learn to let it go. She was forced to and that wasn't enough for her.

I was ready for Abby thanks to the leaks and I had a pretty good idea they'd do that sort of thing so I was ready. Once she got caught by the Scars I was down with her.

My only real niggle with it is the big theater cliffhanger. I think the Abby playthrough should have been after the theater or even after the farm. Ideally I'd treat Ellie and Abby as separate campaigns that can be played however you like with the epilogue unlocked when both are done.

The show did mature a bit in the second half of its run to the point where I would say it doesn't try to claim this at all.

Besides I feel like there's a way to handle the subject manner in a mature, morally grey way that fits our current historical "moment"

You could but that would need a reboot at this point I think. But I also don't think 24 exists without Keifer Sutherland.

Shows like The Bodyguard still do work pretty well and that wasn't too long ago so yeah it overall can be done but Jack Bauer is so established at this point. 24 Legacy felt pretty boring compared to the heights of the old seasons.

It's kind of like the X-Files to me. It's a show that is a product of its time. 24 is totally War on Terror Bush era sort of stuff (that sort of also gave a preview of Obama with Palmer funnily enough). It's a double edged sword since the show was special because of when it released in the right moment but it's also hard to replicate that sort of feeling. They also both relied on their stars in a very significant way.

Playstation and Nintendo just do an outright better job at it.

Xbox has nostalgia about Halo...and that's about it.

It's probably related to them being primarily a tech company so it's not really in their DNA. But like Playstation for example has done a great job of even associating games that they didn't really have anything to do with with their platform like GTA and Final Fantasy. Equivalents for Xbox here would be stuff like Elder Scrolls, Splinter Cell (maybe even Tom Clancy in general) and Mass Effect (hell they published the first game in that instance) but yet I don't think those franchises are really seen in that same way.

They've been in the business for 18 years now so it's not like they're too new t have it. They're basically at the stage where Playstation was leading up to the PS4 and that marketing campaign banked heavily on nostalgia. They did have that Duke controller release not long ago but I think that was pushed by the guy who invented that controller more than the company itself.

It could be because they're the newest of the big three so they're just at an inherent advantage. But I dunno. They tend to chase marketing/exclusive deals for stuff like Tomb Raider and Devil May Cry so I'm not completely sure if they really get that side of it.

Ironically they're also the best out of the big three with their legacy titles so they have plenty reason to capitalize on it.

They do have their flashy event in two weeks so maybe we will see them capitalize on it more. If they announce something like the Mass Effect Trilogy there I suppose that is a sign of them understanding their legacy. You could also argue that not worrying about it can also be a bit of a strength. But it's hard to deny that this is the sort of stuff that gets people hyped. Look at the rumors of Sony funding an exclusive Silent Hill game. That's the kind of stuff Microsoft should probably go for more.
