It's not unique to America. Some games from Japan and Taiwan are bleaker than anything in TLOU2. Corpse Party and Detention are two examples I've personally played.

Eh, I loved the first one and I loved this one. The story wasnt what I wanted but life isnt what I wanted. The transsexual and the lesbian business didnt seem forced. The story went alright to me.

this is a very valid and fair point that i hadn't considered. for the record, i do absolutely think lgbtq+ characters should just be common place and it is frustrating to watch them be first delegated to "mature" titles before being common place.

Meanwhile you'll see stacks of Last of Us 2 in stores for cheaper. There was even a meme last week as someone found it in what's called the "wagon" or a huge dump bin of hugely reduced games you can usually buy for a coin, anywhere from 100 to 500 yen. I linked to Japanese Amazon earlier. It's still 5500 yen new and the cheapest used is 3400 yen. I was at BookOff and Animate last weekend and neither had it in some super discount bin. I don't know why you're so obsessed with painting this narrative when it's so easy to show it's wrong. The Amazon reviews are more positive than negative, that image picked a single 1 star review and tried to claim it was the average. All this topic does is encourage already prevalent racist stereotypes about Japanese people being a monolith with one opinion.

lol going by that page The Last of Us 2 subreddit has been completely taken over by people just whining about the game.

Dunno why anyone would expect it to sell double than the original on PS3 (it did double the sales of the PS4 remaster) just because God of War was a hit there anyway. Character action games are more popular in Japan. Outside of that he just listed a bunch of games that sold about the same.

You're talking about scripts like they grow on trees and a writer/director either presents them in their natural state or injects their "agenda". There is plenty of mindless action in media if you want to avoid agendas. I'm not even saying that as a dig at mindless action.

Where is the extremist ideology agenda and subversion of expectations in TLOU2? People are so triggered by The Last Jedi and the Game of Thrones final season that they think subversion means "doing thing when I feel they should have done other thing".

I literally posted sales data. It's impossible for a Western game to sell 500,000 copies in Japan, being the fifth highest selling game on the system, and yet somehow Japanese people don't play and mock Western games. You can find plenty of trolls on this message board who don't play and mock Japanese games, doesn't mean they represent all Westerners and the sales data makes that obvious.
