Again the Star Child doesn't want anything. He leaves the decision up to Shepard because his 'solution' doesn't work anymore.

Catalyst: You have hope, more than you think. The fact that you are standing here, the first organic ever proves it. But it also proves my solution wont work any more.

Shepard: So now what?

Catalyst: We find a new solution.

Shepard: Why are you telling me this? Why Help me?

Catalyst: You have altered the variables.

Shepard: What do you mean?

Shepard: The crucible changed me, created new... possibilities. But I cant make them happen. If there is to be a new solution. You must act. It is now in your power to destroy us. But be warned, others will be destroyed as well. The crucible will not discriminate. All synthetics will be targeted. Even you are partly synthetic.

I want details.

Shepard: What exactly will happen?

Catalyst: Your crucible device appear to be largely intact. However the effects of the blast will not be constrained to the Reapers. Technology you rely on will be affected. But those who survive should have little difficulty in repairing the damage... There will still be loses but no more that what has already been lost.

It will end the war?

Shepard: But the Reapers will be destroyed?

Catalyst: Yes but the peace wont last. Soon your children will create synthetics and then the chaos will come back.

Shepard: There has to be another way.

Catalyst: There is, you could instead use the energy of the crucible to seize control of the Reapers.

Shepard: So the Illusive man was right after all?

Catalyst: Yes but he could never have taken control, because we already controlled him.

Shepard: But I can?

Catalyst: You will die, you will control us but you will lose everything you have.

I dont understand.

Shepard: How can I control the Reapers if Im dead?

Catalyst: Your corporeal form will be dissolved. But your thoughts and even your memories will continue. You will no longer be organic. Your connection to your kind will be lost. Although you will remain aware of their existence.

I think I understand...

Shepard: But the Reapers will obey me?

Catalyst: Yes. We will be yours to control and direct as you see fit.

Shepard: Hmm...

Catalyst: There is another solution... Synthesis.

Shepard: And that is?

Catalyst: Add your energy to the crucibles. The chain reaction will combine all synthetic and organic life into a new framework. A new DNA.

How?

Shepard: Explain how my energy can be added to the crucible.

Catalyst: Your organic energy. The essence of who and what you are, will be broken down and then dispersed.

Shepard: To do what exactly?

Catalyst: The energy of the crucible, released in this way will alter the matrix of all organic life in the galaxy. Organics seek perfection through technology, synthetics seek perfection through understanding. Organics will be perfected by integrating fully with synthetic technology. Synthetics in turn will finally have understanding of organics. It is the ideal solution. Now that we know it is possible, it is inevitable we will reach synthesis.

Shepard: Why couldn't you do it sooner?

Catalyst: We have tried... a similar solution in the past. But it has always failed.

Shepard: Why?

Catalyst: Because the organics were not ready, it is not something that can be... forced. You are ready and you may choose it.

Thats a big change.

Shepard: Youre asking me to change everything, everyone. I cant make that decision. And I wont.

Catalyst: Why not? Synthetics are already part of you. Can you imagine your life without them?

Shepard: That is beside the point.

I know. I don't think any of the three endings are the correct one. They all suck.

I go with Control personally. If they're gonna lean so hard with the Space Jesus shit may as well get Shepard to ascend into Godhood.

In Destroy you sacrifice artificial life in order to stop the Reapers
In Control you sacrifice Shepard's humanity to stop the Reapers
In Synthesis you sacrifice individuality to stop the Reapers

That's probably the nicest way I can frame the endings. In reality it was tossed together and gave you a multiple choice dialogue prompt to be over with. All three of them shit on stuff they built up over the trilogy because they're all complex answers that need to be explained within minutes with no build up.

I don't think modern Hitman is as intimidating as a lot of people think. Might be hard to get away from that reputation since the older games could be hard to get into.

Can you elaborate on this? I played Blood Money and loved the concept, but found it difficult to do well without a guide. I really want to play 2016 and 2, but Im afraid of not being good enough at the Hitman formula to enjoy them.

Yeah don't worry at all. There's a guided mode. Basically if you walk around the level you'll find 'opportunities' that open up an assassination possibility. You can choose if it gives you waypoints or just a general hint. It's a great way to learn a level. If you do all of the opportunities within one level you'll know most of it which then leads into accomplishing harder challenges if you want to go for it.

The game communicates with you a lot better than the older titles. You'll know when you're trespassing or who can see through your disguise. Even tells you if an action will blow your cover. You don't need to track targets on the map either.

Deus Ex isn't really mainstream either though. Seems pretty dead now.

Hitman is at its most satisfying when you kill a target and leave without anyone knowing. Scripting scenarios where you get ambushed or caught goes against that. There's no real way to balance it. As soon as you script a shootout you're ruining that for people. This is why Absolution struggled as a Hitman game.

Hitman 2 and Blood Money does have a couple of scripted shootouts but there's no where near enough for someone to play the game for them. They're cool moments though. But they're not really suitable for the marketing since they're supposed to be surprising.

Maybe it needs to stop being strictly stealth. Like, 47 is very obviously highly trained for everything yet we only do stealth. There need to be some segments, not often, where he's forced to go guns blazing. Because while Deus Ex is primarily stealth, guns blazing still feels, natural, for lack of a better word.

Ugh don't we have enough shooting games?

Like other Hitman games have had shooting segments for the finale and that's it. I'm fine with that. I don't want any outside of that. I don't really know how you could design a Hitman level that would work for both shooting and stealth without making it super linear like Absolution.

I think this situation is a bit different than normal.

Telltale closed down. The people making this game now are salvaging it. They will make money on purchases made after the closure and whatever the retail release is (if there is one). But I doubt they're seeing anything from people who previously bought the game. I don't blame them at all for taking Epic's money. It's probably making up for it.

The people finishing this game off likely aren't going to make a lot of money from this and I doubt the people who have returned from being laid off from Telltale will have a long term job with the company.

Now is Epic being shitheads for paying for exclusivity? Maybe. But unless a company is going to be charitable this sorta stuff seems inevitable.

It's a shitty situation but this isn't exactly an ideal situation for an episodic game to be in. Last month it looked like the game was completely dead.

Unfortunately people blamed the episodic model as a reason for why Hitman 2016 flopped. It did seem like Hitman 2 was still developed with it in mind though.

If we get Hitman 3 it'll be interesting to see what they come up with since episodic games seem to be dying. I'd be fine seeing a mix of smaller and larger levels throughout the game similar to Silent Assassin or Blood Money. Dunno if it'll happen now unfortunately.

I think Hitman 2016 has more content than all of the previous games combined. But if you're rushing through the main story you'd have no idea.

It's weird because nobody ever says that an open world game only has one level. Each level is a mini sandbox that has scripted routines built in.

I love stealth in general, but the what makes the series unique is also its biggest flaw, at least before the 2016 reboot which I haven't played.

The maps are generally nonlinear and multipathed, which is nice, but once you know what to do, you've sucked most of the flavor out. Sure you can go for other routes to see what happens, but the puzzle is already solved, and often, the patience required to handle the rest of the content is annoying, because you're waiting to take action for something you already know how to do. It's like a red light on your gameplay ride. Cool the first time, annoying on replays.

I recently went through Blood Money again, because it was free from games with gold. The unlockable weapons serve almost no purpose. You either glitch them into making a stealth run feasible yet slower, or you're essentially turning it into a rushed mob hit instead of a classy stealth run. Which is its own kinda fun, but the novelty is cheap.

The newer games have way more stuff to do. You've got the 'canon' story missions that you have way more opportunities than Blood Money did. Like it would take around 10 hours per mission to see them all. You've got elusive targets that are only available for a limited time. You've got Escalations that require you to kill targets (can be anyone in the map) with specific outfits and weapons along with other conditions. They tackled that issue for sure.

Another virgin birth just in time for Christmas! However, as we learn in Marvels finale of the stand-alone Darth Vader comic series, this one is a bit more insidious. Pun intended.

In Darth Vader No. 25, Anakin unlocks a portal to the afterlife, in the hopes of resurrecting his dead wife, Padm. What he finds are glimpses of his journey toward the dark side and the identity of his parents. He sees Shmi and the ghostly figure of Darth Sidious (aka Emperor Palpatine) behind her, using the dark side of the Force to impregnate her.

If PS All Stars was more genuine and a lot more contained in important Sony things rather than just shoving all sorts of shit and trying to be different from Smash for the sake of it, it could've been something they'd do more than once

I think that's their biggest issue with both All-Stars and the Classic. People want to feel like the people behind the product actually care.

Weirdly enough their marketing team is pretty damn excellent at it. The PS4 marketing used PS1 nostalgia extremely well.

I don't know if it's goodwill or Sony being incredibly cheap with the licensing deals.

That could absolutely be the case but it's hard to believe they wouldn't do everything they could to get Cloud in All-Stars when Nintendo apparently would (twice!), despite nobody ever being able to have a legitmate complaint about his absence in Smash.

Hell, I love that he's on the roster but Smash doesn't need Cloud at all. It's difficult to imagine All-Stars ever working without him, by comparison.

Cloud does seem to be the most restricted character in Smash Bros. They only have a couple of music tracks for his level. Probably because the soundtrack licensing is ridiculously expensive or because Square-Enix is incredibly protective over FF7.

Tbh both PlayStation All-Stars and the PlayStation Classic seem like low budget affairs so I can believe that's the biggest factor. All-Stars uses powerpoint backgrounds for menus...

The fact that PS Classic is such a massive fuck up is the biggest head scratcher.

It almost feels like Sony doesn't have as much goodwill from other companies as Nintendo have.

Like, the PS Classic and their take on Smash both heavily relied on 3rd parties going in with them in a big way. The characters offered to them for All-Stars (or whatever it was called) were mainly used for advertisement and not respect of their gaming history as a whole. I sometimes wonder if the PS Classic selection missing so many mega games is another case of these same third-parties just unwilling to throw in with Sony again.

I have no idea why any of that would be the case, though.

It's not exactly an unknown IP. It has had two movies based around it. It has easy to recognize imagery. It seemed to be big enough during the PS2/Xbox era and Absolution seemed to be a decently big success but Hitman 2016 and Hitman 2 seem to be incredibly niche titles.

Is it due to complexity or uniqueness? The lack of a big multiplayer focus? Not being an open world game?

I legit don't know what else they can do to make the games more accessible without completely neutering what it is. It sucks.
