Should I like, study the combos? There's a ton of them. I'm not sure there's necessarily a time when you should absolutely go "punch punch punch kick punch jump kick" instead of "punch kick punch repeat"

Maybe learning the combos is a slight DPS increase but the biggest DPS increase is uptime which means dodging and taking maximum advantage of openings

The game does in fact kick ass. I just get intimidated by those long lists. Sometimes I mash buttons and Bayonetta finishes with a wicked weave punch which is really good of course. But it's hard to just look at the list and then put things into practice especially when everyone is swinging at you.

How do I consistently get Punish, Grab, or Torture Attack? Often I get the magic gauge filled but am not presented with opportunity for a while.

Just master witch time dodging and the easy wicked weaves (which are like punch kick punch, I think, etc.).

Just google the easy wicked weaves.

dodging is important and charged attacks/button holds are much better than long strings of short inputs

the game is actually a lot more slow-paced than what it first feels like

Does Bat Within effectively extend the dodge-witchtime window? Or does it just prevent you from being combo'd?

Tips for special techniques to buy in general? I love unlocking techniques in games but I feel need to balance with buying lollipops. But then like, are lollipops even worth it? I got tons of silver gold and platinum metals in my last chapter and I still got Stone Award (worst one), I guess because I died twice when all was said and done.

I can't seem to even pull Witch Twist off in "Try" mode, does it conflict with Breakdance? I wanted to try and see if you can do Twist - Afterburner Kick like Smash >_>

Lollipops suck. Don't buy. Bat within is one of her best abilities. It extends the dodge window.

Its mostly like a worse version of Ninja Gaiden Black. Learn some combos that seem really good for any situation and button mash when you want. Bayo has QTEs though, and I dont think Ninja Gaiden has them. Some weapons are good, some are okay or probably awful. I ended up using the sword a good bit but there are fights where you want guns.

You don't really need to memorize combos outside of maybe PKP. It's more about knowing when to dodge, knowing when to hold down the buttons to shoot em and knowing when to Wicked Weave. Which you will learn the more you play.

The Alfheim Portals are the best way to learn advanced play. But don't worry about it so much on your first playthrough. It's totally normal to get a whole lot of Stone Awards.

Movement really is a big issue with Platinum Games. It was fucking atrocious in Nier:A but man any Bayonetta level where the floor or walls can damage you can fuck off. The movement is not precise enough for to allow for this kind of design.

Moving anywhere in that game is a gamble between an infinite number of invisible walls and fucked up collision and arbitrary transitions from 3D control to side scrolling and vise versa.

I'm on the Tower mission (XV) in Bayonetta and theres literally Super Mario Galaxy platforms to go up from the top. The game is not built for this. Platinum has all these ideas for set pieces and epic moments but they can't code the player actually navigating them. Navigating many of these segments is like pissing at a wall.

Isn't that just one quick sequence? I don't think you can even die there. You also have a shadow that tells you where you're going to land.

Seriously, I dont know how they find this acceptable during play testing.

You're at the top of the tower. Platforms appear and disappear in set timing, circumscribing the tower, and Bayonetta can wall walk to make use of them cool. Except they also begin fading automatically if you so much as approach them. Well, that's a little confusing and counter-intuitive until you realize what is occurring, but whatever, run for it. So you manage to get a good path and come up to the top, cool. You jump to this great floating tower wall and land in safety.

And then gravity reverts to normal and Bayonetta falls all the way back down to where you started. You see way up where you ended theres actually platforms you're supposed to turn around and land on. There is no way in hell you will take notice of these because the camera is facing the disappearing platforms, and you are concerned with, you know, climbing to where they end and not fucking falling. It just makes no sense.

It is one sequence but it is an example of many sequences that just do not work. I would definitely say more of the sequences and control scheme changes do not work rather than do.

Seeing as how you're the first person I've ever seen who's said something about movement in Nier, I'd bet money that it is the port.

Every Platinum game iterates on a previous game of theirs in some way, but the DMC-Bayonetta connection is the strongest. The Bracelet of Time even appears way back in DMC1.

And yeah platforming in their games sucks. It was alright in Metal Gear Rising though.
