So... will they be giving citizens that cant afford to transition over gasoline/diesel free vehicles?

Do you really believe electric vehicles will be prohibitively expensive in 10 years? They're also still be able to buy used vehicles, which is why there's a second date further in the future for banning the sale of gas.

This is all just politicians now, trying to do something that'll look good for the future, which has no effect on them now.

There's probably numerous politicians working on this that plan to still be in politics in 2030, not to mention that if they do pass a law like this it will for sure impact them as well.

The courts don't even care either which is the crazier thing.

Like what's the point of even having it in the constitution if you're not going to enforce it? It wasn't even a fucking amendment it was literally in the original draft of the constitution.

The issue isn't really the Federal part, it's more the State laws part.

For example the Democrats in Kentucky put forward legislation that if passed, anyone convicted of a crime related to domestic violence anywhere would not be able to own firearms in Kentucky. Thus, if you had a DV conviction and were found with a firearm, you'd be charged for it (I don't know the penalties, I just know the law was put forth).

So in a "2nd amendment sanctuary" county, the idea would be that this law wouldn't be enforced and either no one would be charged for it, or the charges could be dropped for no real reason.

The Municipal-County-State relationship is far more nuanced than the Municipal-Federal one, so local officials telling people to completely ignore State-level law and that they won't be enforcing it, is a lot messier than the other "sanctuary" thing they're trying to draw a parallel to. For example I believe in Oregon it's directly in their State Constitution that only the State Legislature can regulate firearms, so these counties passing these are violating the law.

In fact I wouldn't even directly compare this to "Sanctuary Cities" even though that's obviously the parallel they're trying to draw, because the US Government has continually asserted that it is to be sole arbiter and enforcer of immigration laws, and continually fought all State-level laws all the way to the Supreme Court (Arizona SB 1070 from 2020, for example), and local law enforcement is not required to help enforce federal law. This has absolutely no happened with any type of firearm laws.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/27/opinion/jewish-culture-genius-iq.html?smtyp=cur&smid=tw-nytopinion

Good ol' Bret Stephens

An eminent Lithuanian rabbi is annoyed that his yeshiva students devote their lunch breaks to playing soccer instead of discussing Torah. The students, intent on convincing their rav of the games beauty, invite him to watch a professional match. At halftime, they ask what he thinks.

I have solved your problem, the rabbi says.

How?

Give one ball to each side, and they will have nothing to fight over.

I have this (apocryphal) anecdote from Norman Lebrechts new book, Genius & Anxiety, an erudite and delightful study of the intellectual achievements and nerve-wracked lives of Jewish thinkers, artists, and entrepreneurs between 1847 and 1947. Sarah Bernhardt and Franz Kafka; Albert Einstein and Rosalind Franklin; Benjamin Disraeli and (sigh) Karl Marx how is it that a people who never amounted even to one-third of 1 percent of the worlds population contributed so seminally to so many of its most pathbreaking ideas and innovations?

The common answer is that Jews are, or tend to be, smart. When it comes to Ashkenazi Jews, its true. Ashkenazi Jews have the highest average I.Q. of any ethnic group for which there are reliable data, noted one 2005 paper. During the 20th century, they made up about 3 percent of the U.S. population but won 27 percent of the U.S. Nobel science prizes and 25 percent of the ACM Turing awards. They account for more than half of world chess champions.

But the Jews are smart explanation obscures more than it illuminates. Aside from the perennial nature-or-nurture question of why so many Ashkenazi Jews have higher I.Q.s, there is the more difficult question of why that intelligence was so often matched by such bracing originality and high-minded purpose. One can apply a prodigious intellect in the service of prosaic things formulating a war plan, for instance, or constructing a ship. One can also apply brilliance in the service of a mistake or a crime, like managing a planned economy or robbing a bank.

But as the story of the Lithuanian rabbi suggests, Jewish genius operates differently. It is prone to question the premise and rethink the concept; to ask why (or why not?) as often as how; to see the absurd in the mundane and the sublime in the absurd. Ashkenazi Jews might have a marginal advantage over their gentile peers when it comes to thinking better. Where their advantage more often lies is in thinking different.

Where do these habits of mind come from?

There is a religious tradition that, unlike some others, asks the believer not only to observe and obey but also to discuss and disagree. There is the never-quite-comfortable status of Jews in places where they are the minority intimately familiar with the customs of the country while maintaining a critical distance from them. There is a moral belief, incarnate in the Jewish people according to Einstein, that the life of the individual only has value [insofar] as it aids in making the life of every living thing nobler and more beautiful.

And there is the understanding, born of repeated exile, that everything that seems solid and valuable is ultimately perishable, while everything that is intangible knowledge most of all is potentially everlasting.

We had been well off, but that was all we got out, the late financier Felix Rohatyn recalled of his narrow escape, with a few hidden gold coins, from the Nazis as a child in World War II. Ever since, Ive had the feeling that the only permanent wealth is what you carry around in your head. If the greatest Jewish minds seem to have no walls, it may be because, for Jews, the walls have so often come tumbling down.

The "2005 paper" he cites is this one, "Natural History of Ashkenazi Intelligence"
https://web.mit.edu/fustflum/documents/papers/AshkenaziIQ.jbiosocsci.pdf

Which was co-authored by a known White Nationalist and Eugenicist

Reminder the NYT decided they no longer needed to have a person in the position that would have been responsible for reading this article and saying "What the fuck is this we're not publishing this"

Similar to sanctuary cities for illegals, local authorities have refused to commit resources to enforce gun laws that they consider to be most likely unconstitutional unless and until the SCOTUS rules otherwise. If the state wants those laws enforced, they will have to commit their own resources to do so.

It actually sounds like it's the local courts refusing to enforce it and not like, the police or anything.

https://local12.com/news/local/white-house-proposes-500-increase-in-cost-of-getting-immigration-records-cincinnati

Tracing your roots is about to be a lot more expensive if the Trump Administration passes proposed rate increases for historical documents.

In November, the Department of Homeland Security announced rulemaking adjustment proposals for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services' Immigration Examinations Fee Account schedule. What once cost between $40 and $50 could soon cost upwards of $600.

"I don't know of any other agency or archive that charges that kind of money to obtain a copy of a historical document, said Rich Venezia.

Venezia is a professional genealogist in Pittsburgh. Hes one of nearly a dozen people in his field leading the charge to convince the government to not make the rate increase.

"These new fees would run you anywhere from -- starting at $240 and go all the way to possibly $600 just to get a copy of a single file, said Venezia.

Researching family history is extremely popular right now. However, Venezia says if the rates skyrocket, that casual hobby will disappear.

"I think theres very few people doing hobbyist genealogy in the country that have a spare $240 and certainly not $625 to obtain copies of records, said Venezia.

The genealogy program by the USCIS allows genealogists like Venezia and everyday people the opportunity to obtain citizenship and alien registration files, visa applications and other records of immigrants who came to the U.S. through Ellis Island between the late 19th and mid-20th centuries.

In November, the acting director of the USCIS, Ken Cuccinelli, released this statement regarding the proposal"

USCIS is required to examine incoming and outgoing expenditures, just like a business, and make adjustments based on that analysis. This proposed adjustment in fees would ensure more applicants cover the true cost of their applications and minimizes subsidies from an already over-extended system...Furthermore, the adjudication of immigration applications and petitions requires in-depth screening, incurring costs that must be covered by the agency, and this proposal accounts for our operational needs and better aligns our fee schedule with the costs of processing each request.

Venezias effort Records, Not Revenue aims to lay out all the information and give people a place to go to make public comment the USCIS will review. The public comment period ends on Dec. 30.
