Yep even in Canada the Liberals are the "centre" party. The American political system as a whole may be shifted further to the right when compared to other countries but the whole two-party thing just makes it even messier.

If he'd just said, "It's a criminal offence to deny the Holocaust in several countries: discuss the rights and wrongs", he'd have been OK and the topic would have been valid. But instead, he's insisted on fighting this losing battle of trying to prove something erroneous and in the process, he just keeps demonstrating that he doesn't properly research anything.

But that would mean this topic was actually made in good faith and isn't just another troll job by a user too cowardly to make this topic using their main.

War with Iran probably wouldn't help his popularity. No one wants it, not even GOP voters.

And to that end I think if Trump did try and declare war on Iran that the GOP would be forced to act and override him. They'd be shooting themselves in the foot if they let him do if.

Why would we lose to Iran? We have the most powerful army in the world.

The US has zero practical way to get its army into the country. They can't invade from the Gulfs, they can't invade from Iraq, they can't invade from Turkey, they can't invade from Pakistan, attempting to invade from Afghanistan would require crossing enormous desert wasteland (not to mention putting troops there is going to put up every red flag in Russia).

It would cost the US thousands of lives.

TopicErik Prince may have broken Venezuela sanctions
Bio1590

Erik Prince, a major Republican donor and founder of controversial security firm Blackwater, has been referred to the U.S. Treasury Department for possible sanctions violations tied to his recent trip to Venezuela for a meeting with a top aide of President Nicolas Maduro, two senior U.S. officials said.

Theres no indication that Prince, whose sister is Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, will be sanctioned for the meeting last month in Caracas with Venezuelas Vice President Delcy Rodriguez.

But the fact the visit was flagged underscores the concern of officials in the Trump administration over what appeared to be anunauthorized diplomatic outreach to Maduro. This, as support for opposition leader Juan Guaid inside Venezuela if not Washington appears to be waning.

The U.S. officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they arent authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

Little has been revealed about Princes surprise trip to Caracas last month. But the mere presence in Venezuela of a businessman with longstanding ties to the U.S. national security establishment prompted questions about whether he was there to open a secret back channel to Maduro on behalf of the Trump administration, something the State Department has strenuously denied.

It also marks something of a reversal for Prince, who earlier in 2019 was thought to have been pitching a plan to form a mercenary army to topple Maduro.

A person familiar with Princes visit said he had been asked to travel to Venezuela by an unidentified European businessman with longstanding ties to the oil-rich nation. The person said Prince did not discuss any business nor receive anything of value during his trip actions that wouldve violated U.S. financial sanctions on Maduros socialist government.

The purpose of the trip was to meet key players in the crisis-wracked nation, not to serve as an emissary for the Trump administration, according to the person, who isnt authorized to discuss the visit and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The person said Prince, a former Navy SEAL, continues to support the Trump administrations goal of removing Maduro but believes State Department efforts to reach that goal have failed and new alternatives which the person did not specify need to be tried.

Before traveling, Prince notified the National Security Council and Treasury Department about his plans and received no objections, the person said.

In a statement, Princes attorney didnt provide any details about the trip or whom his client may have alerted in the U.S. government.

Before traveling to Venezuela as a private citizen, Erik Prince received clear legal guidance, which he scrupulously followed, Matthew Schwartz said in the statement. There is nothing unlawful about simply visiting Venezuela and participating in non-business discussions, which is all that Mr. Prince did. We would be better served by focusing on measures that might actually restore peace and prosperity to Venezuela rather than worrying about who paid a visit to whom.

Neither the National Security Council nor the Treasury Department responded to a request for comment.

Rodriguez is a key aide to Maduro and also one of more than 100 Venezuelan government insiders who have been slapped with sanctions by the U.S. In addition, the Trump administration this year has imposed sweeping sanctions on Venezuelas oil industry and a ban on U.S. companies and individuals from doing business with the Maduro administration.

While in Caracas, Prince also met members of the opposition, although the person familiar with his trip declined to say whom.

An aide to Juan Guaid said no such meeting with anyone in the opposition took place. But the aide was unable to provide the same assurances for a small faction of minority parties that recently split from Guaid and initiated negotiations with Maduro that the U.S. considers a time-wasting sideshow.

A year after the U.S. recognized Guaid as Venezuelas interim president, arguing that Maduros re-election was fraudulent, the 36-year-old lawmaker is under increasing pressure from friends and foes alike to articulate a fresh vision for unseating the socialist leader, who has grown more confident as the economy stabilizes under a flood of black-market U.S. dollars.

Another person familiar with the visit said Prince, in his late November dinner at Rodriguezs home, urged the release of six executives of Houston-based Citgo held for more than two years on what are widely seen as trumped-up corruption charges. Two weeks later, the six men five of them dual U.S.-Venezuelan citizens were granted house arrest. The person also spoke on the condition of anonymity given the sensitivities surrounding the trip.

Elliott Abrams, the U.S. special envoy to Venezuela, said Dec. 20 that Prince was not a messenger for the U.S. government, nor was the U.S. engaging in any secret talks with Maduro.

I have yet to find an American official who says he or she was briefed by Mr. Prince, and I have asked, Abrams told a press briefing. So, I dont know if he briefed an American official, and if so, who it was.

Prince has been accused of acting as a back channel on behalf of Trump before. In 2017, he met with an official close to Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Seychelles, islands off the coast of east Africa. Special counsel Robert Muellers report on his Russia investigation said the meeting was set up ahead of time with the knowledge of former White House aide Stephen Bannon.

Prince soared to notoriety after Blackwater employees in 2007 shot and killed Iraqi civilians in Baghdads Nisour Square during the Iraq war. After the scandal the companys name was changed and Prince sold his shares to a private equity fund. Today he heads a private equity fund focused on investments in frontier emerging markets.

If gas was banned in BC/Vancouver, we would be forced to get all energy from BC Hydro, theyd have a monopoly on all energy. Thats way too much power to have.

We are already only allowed to buy car insurance from one providers and its corrupt and fucking horrible

And no, mutiple electricity providers will not happen here, dont come back with that

The government also heavily relies on gasoline taxes, sales taxes werent temporary, property taxes werent temporary. The government isnt going to give up the gas tax money either

lmao BC Hydro is a crown corporation it's cheaper than anything private would ever be.

Manitoba Hydro, a crown corporation, supplies all energy in Manitoba, and guess what? Manitoba has some of the cheapest rates in North America.

TopicAustralia fires worsen as every state hits 40 C (104 F)
Bio1590

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-50938504

Scores of fires are burning out of control across Australia amid a heatwave that has seen temperatures exceed 40C (104F) in every state.

The most dangerous fires on Monday were in the state of Victoria.

About 30,000 residents and tourists were urged to flee East Gippsland - a popular holiday region - but evacuations were later deemed too risky as fires encroached on major roads.

A volunteer firefighter died battling a blaze in the state of New South Wales.

In total, 10 people have died in the nation's bushfire crisis since September.

Meteorologists say a climate system in the Indian Ocean, known as the dipole, is the main driver behind the extreme heat in Australia.

What happened to the firefighter?
Authorities said the volunteer firefighter was killed and two others suffered burns after their truck rolled over in extreme winds while they were battling a blaze east of the city of Albury.

New South Wales (NSW) Premier Gladys Berejiklian described the death as "heartbreaking".

"Words fail at times like this," she wrote on Twitter.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said another firefighter was injured in a separate vehicle.

"This is awful news for the families and our sympathies are with them. These are testing times. We are so grateful for the courage and dedication of our firefighters," he tweeted.

The volunteer firefighter is the third to be killed so far this fire season. Two volunteer firefighters, both fathers to young children, died on 19 December battling a blaze near Sydney.

Prime Minister Morrison was widely criticised for being abroad on holiday at the time, and returned home early.

How bad are the blazes in Victoria?
Scorching temperatures, strong winds and thunderstorms created dangerous conditions in Victoria on Monday.

In East Gippsland, three fires burning near the towns of Bruthen, Buchan and Bonang rapidly expanded as temperatures soared to the mid-40Cs.

Officials said the wind-driven blazes were "racing" towards the coast, and had moved faster than predicted.

Residents in northern Melbourne were told to "act immediately to survive" as firefighters struggled to battle an out-of-control fire.

Officials said the fire in Bundoora, some 16km (10 miles) north of Melbourne city centre, was "threatening homes and lives".

"The safest option is to take shelter indoors immediately. It is too late to leave," Victoria Emergency said.

The fire, which reportedly damaged homes in the area, was later downgraded from the emergency level.

Other emergency warnings remained in place for several fires in the state, with some urged to evacuate.

"We have had a challenging day in Victoria," said Andrew Crisp, the state's emergency management commissioner.

He said the huge blazes had produced their own weather systems from smoke columns "punching into the atmosphere 14km high".

"There's lightning coming out of these columns. It is unpredictable [and] it's dangerous out there," he said.

Similar fire-generated thunderstorms - or pyrocumulonimbus - were also recorded in NSW.

Lightning strikes in dry, drought-affected forests have the potential to quickly become fires that threaten lives and homes.

Dry lightning sparked at least 70 new fires in the region in the past 24 hours, officials said.

A 250km (155-mile) stretch of the Princes Highway, east of Bairnsdale, was closed on Monday.

On Sunday, Mr Crisp urged people in the region - about 280km (175 miles) east of Melbourne - to "get out", but confirmed on Monday that many people had remained in the region.

Elsewhere in the state, a major New Year's Eve music festival has been cancelled after organisers said the bushfire threat was too dangerous.

Some 9,000 people had already been camping at the Falls Festival in Lorne.

Access is by a single track, meaning it would not be possible for festival-goers to evacuate quickly.

"We are gutted to make this call but the safety of our patrons, artists and staff is our main priority," said organiser Jessica Ducrou.

What about the other states?
In South Australia, crews battled "catastrophic" fire conditions in a wine region north-east of Adelaide.

The island state of Tasmania also struggled to contain bushfires amid a sweltering heatwave.

Hobart, the state's capital, experienced its hottest December day on record when temperatures hit 40.8C on Monday.

More than 100 blazes continue to burn in NSW, the state worst-affected by the fires so far this year.

Temperatures exceeded 41C in parts of the state, including in Sydney, Australia's largest city.

Officials have warned that "deteriorating weather conditions" could worsen bushfires in the state on Tuesday.

The town of Balmoral, south-west of Sydney, was largely destroyed on 22 December amid similar conditions.

What will happen to New Year's Eve fireworks?
With total fire ban restrictions in place, several regions have cancelled their New Year's Eve fireworks, including the Australian Capital Territory, where the nation's capital city Canberra is located.

However in Sydney, authorities say the city's harbour fireworks display - watched by millions around the world - will go ahead despite criticism.

More than a quarter of a million people have signed a petition calling for the fireworks to be cancelled and the money spent on fighting fires.

The city's authorities say the cancellation would have little practical effect on affected communities.

Details of a bushfire relief fund will be projected on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during the night.

Across Australia, the fires have destroyed at least four million hectares (9.9m acres) in five states since September.

It's insane how bad this is and it still hasn't even hit the usual hottest time of the year there yet.
