My advice, don't live in Sydney, it's a shithole. I live in Brisbane and I'm from Melbourne.

But yeah, Sydney is most expensive city in Australia, so be prepared for that. 115k (assuming AUD) is not a lot to get by solo in Sydney if you want to live close to the city. If you mean 115k USD, then you'll be comfy.

I'd start looking now, line up a few inspections if you can. It's a very competitive market in Australia ATM though and rents are skyrocketing with the inflation and interest rate increases in 2022 (cash rate has gone from like 0.25% to 2.85% this year)

Redfern/Mascot/Kensington/Surry Hills are all close to the city, maybe try those suburbs.

You generally pay bond (month rent) and first 4 weeks up front. Rent can be paid weekly, fortnightly, monthly depending on your agreement with the real estate/landlord.

Feel free to DM me for more advice
thanks for the advice!

Yeah, Im not looking to stay in the CBD or anything, I was in Potts Point for the few weeks I was there and mostly I am just hoping to be close enough to the music scene to be able to go to jazz sessions and whatnot when i am not working. Most of those you listed seem to be in the 30-ish minute range by train which is a-okay for me.

It is in fact 115k AUD; Ive lived on like, 20k for the past few years living in nyc, so even if Im not living lush Im hopeful it will still be at least a little more comfortable lol

I am moving to Sydney in late February to start a job with the Sydney Symphony. I need to find a place to live!

They are paying for me to stay in a hotel for the first month while I search for a place to live.

I have a couple questions about the renting process over there.

1) how long is the turnaround process, generally on signing for an apartment? Is it something where I should begin reaching out before I move there, or would a month be enough time to find a place to live once I am there?

2) my salary is $115k (and hopefully there will be some additional teaching/gig money on top of that). What sort of neighborhoods should I be looking into that would not leave me barely getting by? I am very much hoping to live somewhere in the city where I can get to Circular Quay by train/bus, as I dont believe I will have a car for a little while.

3) is the apartment process similar to somewhere like NYC, where I should expect a broker fee, first months rent, and security deposit all on signing a lease? How do those usually work with rent being per week and not per month?

Very much appreciate if anyone here has any advice to give!

I got a music degree, both Bachelors and Masters, and now I am about to start a $120k/yr job doing nothing but playing in an orchestra for 25 hours a week

obviously fine art doesnt exactly have auditions like orchestras do - though there are plenty of real jobs out there for visual artists - but it is still possible to find a career in it even though its not a straightforward path. as grateful as i am to have this job, the benefits from my arts degree have nothing to do with my job prospects and everything to do with my ability to think about, enjoy, and navigate the world.

The last votes counted in AZ are early ballots that were dropped off on election day. Those results wont be known for a few days probably, but knowing Trumpers skepticism of early voting, I wouldnt be surprised if those votes skew largely blue - just like they did with Biden.

Another big factor is that AZ voters are super big on the environment; we do not have a lot of water and we cant have policies that lose a fuckload. Especially when it comes to more local politics.

This. Arizona locals are way bluer than the transplants. People move there from Cali for the Republican policies they want lol. The hispanic community there is much more left than in a state like Florida, and Tucson/Flagstaff areas have always been blue to the core.

Even the older, typically conservative people I know in AZ are just sick to shit of all the conspiracy bs. They just want to live their lives without hearing about politics at this point, and Republican candidates in that state are screaming about politics way more than the libs.

You seem very agitated.

If you think this country will be fixed by policy alone, I simply have to say I disagree with you. Its going to go the way of every fascist country of the past; a descent into fascism under the guise of we can fix this with policy!, followed by some years of real evil fascism, followed, probably, by a war or revolution that combats it. This topic is merely to say that its not going to get better before it gets worse. Probably much worse.

And, in fact, its required to get worse for revolution to work, because any attempt at such at this point will garner not nearly enough support to actually work.

You can do something big! Volunteer; do conscious small acts of kindness; learn to paint or play an instrument or write poetry or a story and share it with people here or irl just for the sake of sharing - these things may seem small, but they are things not very many people actually do, and I can confidently say the world would be a better place for your doing them. I know its easier said than done, but starting small is always the very first step to making a big impact.

I havent been diagnosed with schizophrenia, but I have dealt with psychosis for about 7 years now, and I really struggled at times with the feeling of detachment and the importance vs. unimportance of things becoming muddied and that making it hard for me to care about anything at all. Doing things where I can see another persons benefit from it helped me rationalize things.

TopicA Question About Exercising and Light Headed
Bananana

Not with lightheadedness. In fact, being lightheaded usually means blood is not pumping enough oxygen when its from exercise, which means your heart will try beating faster, which could lead to increased risk of a heart attack.

With enough time and with guidance from your PT, your heart will get stronger and youll eventually be able to do more before that feeling occurs, but I would certainly not press it given that youve had a fairly recent heart attack.

Even heart issues aside, unless youre hardcore training for a competitive long distance race or such, I would avoid pushing through lightheadedness. Pro runners do it because that feeling is something you have to get used to, but unless you are in that sort of situation and extremely in tune with your body, theres no need. At that point theres no health benefits; competitive racers only do it because they sacrifice some health benefits for their competitiveness.
