only ways that happens is if you applied for a job that nobody wants or you have a skill thats hard to find

Or a combination of skills that put you above the other candidates.

There were plenty of applicants. There always are. Not all of them are great quality.

I dont doubt that knowing people can be a massive advantage, but TCs original claim is far too much of an overgeneralisation.

No, but it helps a lot. So much so that I'd say it's an easier way to get a good job.

I got my job after applying to 20+ other accounting jobs back in 2008.

I knew no one

My only real skill is I knew Excel and quick books slightly more than the average person.

^You got off easy

I know people in accounting that applied in 100+ jobs without knowing anyone and none of them got a single call back

it only took knowing someone from their past to get anywhere

Frankly, if theyre applying for that many jobs and not even getting an interview, either their applications need work or theyre aiming for jobs theyre under qualified for.

Whats depressing is that I know a lot of CEOs, COOs, and other high level employees in my line of work

and you would be surprised how stupid and dumb a lot of them are. im literally convinced a lot of the guys working at big firms would be working in Amazon or McDonalds if they didnt have anyone help them get into their current jobs

That doesnt surprise me at all. Its often not a pure meritocracy. However, there are enough opportunities out there that if you genuinely cant get a decent job, it will be at least partially your fault.

In the Public Accounting world? I would say a huge C. I went to a leadership conference back in my college years and I happen to find this old man in the corner eating pretzel sticks and I just went up and talked to him. We exchanged information (this was required at the event to anybody we talked to) and little did I know he was a CEO of a major CPA firm. He emailed me of a new entry job position that pays up to 95k (plus some really good benefits) that isn't posted anywhere else. It seemed I was still competing against a couple of other candidates (which spoilers I won it), but I wouldn't have ever gotten this opportunity if it weren't for my lucky break of going out of my shell to talk to this old man about 8 tracks. No I'm not even joking, majority of our conversations was about a super niche hobby and he told me about this job position because he liked me.

I will say this, when I was studying for my CPA exam I asked the other CPA's in my firm questions and almost all of them answered with a "I don't know, I threw out all that shit the moment I got my CPA license". I would consistently correct them of beginner mistakes on their reports, but I guess the difference was they get to charge exuberant prices because of those three letters to their name. What I learn about getting a CPA license was that it doesn't tell you how much you know and how much experience you have, it only tells others that you committed your full time to being a Public Accountant.

C and D?

There's only like one job I got in directly from an old coworker who referred me and that job didn't work out well, because my manager was a monster.

But references I've given to new jobs to vet me, which one of the managers knew one of my old managers helped me get my current job.

It does help a lot. But you can get in without one. Some fields matter more than others. Employers do want to vet you and make sure you aren't bad.

Yeah I've went to plenty of interviews where it already felt like they made up their mind (someone within the company) and I was just there to give the interviewing team practice.

I'm literally a multi time case exception to this with 2 large blind moves across the country where I was hired sight unseen, but I've also never seen anyone else in my life luck out the way I have.

I'll toss my chip in the confirm pile as an exception that proves the rule.
