Correctional officer aka prison guard. I really don't get why people don't wanna work this line of work particularly right now. We so short staffed all they care about is a warm body to hold a post. Had a captain literally say to the entire staff that the only way we can get fired right now is bringing drugs in or fucking a inmate.

I get it if you ain't doing it. Looks dangerous and what not looking in from the outside but the amount of people who are working it wanting to quit is what gets me.

Edit: we so short I literally got paid to sit in a chair for 12 hours my last shift. Occasionally had to get up and hand a inmate a form he was requesting and then of course count time.
What's the starting pay like?

Depends on the state. Dunno what federal is like. But you can get by on it. Rough without overtime but there is plenty of that to be had.

Without overtime I started out at like 32k starting is up to 34k now I think. But I average 55k a year. Would suck if I lived somewhere with a high cost of living but I don't. For example I'm living in a 3 bedroom two full bathroom house. My rent is 700 a month. The house when up for sale was like 70k and that included the house behind us too which is a two bedroom one bathroom house.

Now I understand starting pay in Cali is like 90k but I had a ex co worker explain to me he had a 700k house in Cali and he got a similar house here for 170k.

Im the Economic Development Director for my tribal government. Im the point of contact between my organizations executive leadership and other governments and entities: local, state, tribal, and federal. Its basically a ton networking, creating partnerships, securing funding, and project management.

I get to pursue a lot of big projects. Right now Im working on getting our own tribal ISP and utility companies started, helping our medical cannabis company get up and running, and getting my tribe to start growing healthy foods through farming and year-round greenhouse operations. Theres a ton of other things Im working on that arent quite as far along as those projects. Its pretty exciting.

I also do a lot of smaller things like helping tribal members secure funding to start their own business, setting up job training and certification courses, grant writing, and regular managerial duties.

I acknowledge you my tribal chief.

3 years and 2 months. (Kind of a weird thing most COs I know can tell you the date they started. I can tell ya my hire date basic graduation date and the date I physically started working the job)

anyways I work at a tame camp. Couple years before I started officer got stabbed 27 times. He managed to win the fight but ultimately had to quit the job because he started having nightmares about it. My first day inmate got stabbed 17 timed. Think there has been one stabbing since. Few cases of locks in socks though. Few minor assaults.

The urine feces thing doesn't really happen here. They will once in a bluebmoon throw water on you though. Which still has a psychological effect causes the a brief period where you are unsure if it's urine or not.had a inmate have boiling chemicals thrown in his face. Damn near killed him and he tried refusing medical attention.

In my 3 years though only two people have died both inmates. One definitely overdosed the other suspected but we regular officers never got confirmation if it was that or some medical issue.

Have almost had a riot or two to happen but each time it was quelled quickly. The biggest one was over bringing in new inmates when covid was still big news. They simply turned that bus around and took em back where they came from. Can't blame em. Our unit went about the longest on state without a positive case. When it did hit though it hit fucking hard.

So when you say I really don't get why people don't wanna work this line of work particularly right now.

Dont you think your story answers your own question?

Even if you only have 1 of those incidents happen in a 20+ year career, its definitely not worth the money.

Thing is the assaults on officers all came from the officer doing something to provoke it. Yeah doing their job but in a assholish way.

It'd next to impossible to get fired right now. As long as you show up to work it's easy money. The inmates here will actually look out for the officers they think are cool. Like I've seen a inmate go wake up a sleeping officer cause he saw the captain coming. Hell I do my job (just not typically a asshole about it) and I've had inmates look out for me.

As said I work a tame unit though. The set up is not designed to handle the really crazy ones so we do our best to not keep any really crazy ones here.

But to point out like with the guy who got stabbed 27 times. He had a habit of waking inmates up at 3 in the morning and tearing through their property. And hebwas good 9 times out of 10 he'd find something that could add time to their sentence. He has every right to search them whenever he wants but if you value your safety you don't make a habit out of doing that. I've done it but everytime the inmate bought that ticket and the other inmates would actually take my side like "dumb fuck shoulda kept his mouth shut" and the inmates know that about me. I let a lot of shit slide until they go out of their way to piss me off/disrespect me.

Here jails pay more. But you deal with more shit on a regular basis. Always have people still fresh off the street still all in their emotions over getting arrested. I hear it's damn near a fight every day but they are just typical fights. In prison fights are more seldom but when they happen it's usually a lot more serious. Ya know definitely more intent to seriously fuck the other guy up.

I thought the same thing. I just needed a job that actually paid the bills. It's not for everyone sure. But I've always been adaptable. I started off shy timid and weak. I'm probably still weak (physically) but I'm definitely not shy timid and mentally weak anymore.

I'm in charge of running a lot of the post production aspects at a photography studio. We do mostly kid's school pictures, so it's not very artsy. I'm mostly just making sure everyone's keeping to timelines and quality is up to par.

We also work with several photographers that use our studio space to do their work. For reasons I dont fully understand, I'm generally involved in the schmoozing that goes into that too. It's mostly me chatting up people from advertising and modeling companies. I get paid to bullshit with them, so that's fine by me.
