They're called "frames." I was pretty much raised in bowling alleys. My parents met in a bowling league. I had a bowling birthday party when I was 4 or 5. I joined my first youth league when I was 8. So, for example, if I finish a story mission in GTA that unlocks a new island I will then spend the next 10 hours or more doing all sidequests that just opened up on that island before continuing the story missions. Though when it comes to things like collectibles, I will usually avoid getting any of them until they're all obtainable. The "alien" version of your suggestion would be "If you meet 1 life form, then you assume all life forms are like that one life form." And no scientist I've ever heard has suggested that. A better way to put it would be "If you meet 1 person with a particular trait, then it's safe to assume that there is probably another person out there somewhere who also has that trait." And it would equate to the statement "If you meet 1 being that is alive, then it's safe to assume there are other beings out there that are also alive." They don't have to be the same kind of life. I've also had multiple conversations with them about the word and what each of us understands it to mean and represent. Context is important. With some of these friends, I will simply never say the word whether they've given me "permission" or not, because I understand that they find it offensive (and, more importantly, why they find it offensive). With others, I'll only say it if I'm directly quoting something and leaving it out sounds more awkward than just saying it. The ONLY circumstance where I will say it on my own in my own speech is in those discussions directly about the word itself.
