Yeah commons are wordier these days but there are lots of commons that are "choose one of three minor effects" without the body attached, and I don't think this is a big leap in complexity over that.

Snowden has done so much self-aggrandizing of his actual role working for the government when it's clear that what he was mostly motivated by was ego. I think even if you think that he shone light on bad things, the hero narrative kind of falls out of wack when it ends up being more like "I was okay with all of this until people didn't treat me like the wunderkind I thought I was and so I found another way to get infamy".

What should they have learned? The Supreme Court overturned it and it is still just as overturned today.

tldr on what it can do?

openssh is the main way that people log into other computers from Linux (e.g. I ssh into different machines at my workplace through it). xz is a dependency for things that are dependencies for ssh even though it doesn't directly use it, so when you're installing your operating system (or updating it), it gets to load before openssh does. It took advantage of this to backdoor openssh.

What does the backdoor do? Ssh uses certificates the same way that when you go to sites on the internet certificates are exchanged that are like "yes you can trust me that I'm gamefaqs.com". The attacker set it up so that any message that was signed with their private certificate would be run by the system at the level of root (the most powerful permission in linux, think "admin") because ssh has to run as root even if the person running it doesn't have root permissions.

So at this point they have remote code execution, which means they could run any command they wanted on any computer that had this back door and likely would have used this as vector to drop down actual tooling that lets them e.g. steal credentials, take files, etc.

There were so many little clever pieces of setting this up but I think they still would have been caught with how hard they were pushing for the new version to get integrated.

Except it's clearly inefficient. Like I know I have some amount of qualifications, but Amazon should have people who are beyond me in this specific category who would have seen the flaw the second it was proposed. The only reason this ever saw the light of day is because they were always planning to market it the way that they did.

Youre oversimplifying a complex and interesting technical challenge just to dunk on amazon imo. It wasnt just 1000 Indians checking your receipt, it was 1000 Indians attempting to train an ai model (and ultimately failing)

i get that the idea of automating checkout cuts out cashier jobs, but this doesnt do it in a way that inconveniences everyone so its different from your typical self checkout

But as s0nicfan pointed out, if you actually wanted to train an AI model this would be an ineffective way of doing it.

There's a reason when this store was announced that no one mentioned "Oh for now we're still training it and everything will involve human intervention".

Let's say hypothetically that Joe Biden's position on Israel costs him X votes in the right places and he then loses by < X votes. You can go all out blaming the X voters for that, but if Biden could have made different decisions that lost him fewer votes (for example, he's made decisions that go *beyond* what your average Biden-supporting Israel-defending Liberal would demand) and changed the outcome, it's still his fault far more than it is any individual who didn't vote for him.

As someone who will vote for Biden in a state that will almost certainly go for him regardless of my input, it's still annoying for me to see people micro-target people who are like "actually this might negatively impact how likely I am to vote for Biden" if they're not going to make a case that Biden will lose *more* votes by taking [different position]. The Biden administration should be actively trying to win the election rather than just saying "Trump would be worse" and hoping that helps them cross the finish line.

The idea that the Democratic candidate can be as **** as they want to if they're facing Trump is just as dumb as 2016 when I voted for Hillary (though in Nebraska so it was basically worthless).

I didn't buy a house back in 2018 even though I had the means to do so. Now I'm stuck with an interest rate higher than 5% for a house that would've sold for half as much back then.

I was going through the process of finding a house and going through the weekly put in an offer, someone else paid $80k above asking in cash type thing and I ended up finally getting a place two weeks after the rates hiked.

Obviously I wasn't procrastinating or anything so there's not really anything else I could have done but it was still frustrating.

I don't if this has changed at all in the last three years, but there used to be a bunch of people who in their dating profile would be like (exaggerated) "Wow I hate that I have to use a dating app and be among all the losers you can only resort to this" which always seemed weird to me.

It also takes time. Looking at the top of these games, we're not seeing the results of gender norms in the present, we're seeing the results of gender norms ~15 years ago. A totally normal thing that people have to clarify about themselves.

At least in the connotations that I've heard it, it's not just a turn off but also one that you have kind of a visceral reaction to and not a universal thing (aka it would be improper to be like "It gave me the ick when I found out he cheated on his last partner).

I think at some point there's just a numbers game that professional video games doesn't have the same infrastructure to support right now (thought it could in the future).

Like I went to a high school where kids were in football since 6th grade, putting in lots of hours of practice and training. Only a handful of kids during my time there were good enough at football to play in D1 college football. And from there I went to a D1 college with student athletes who were basically full time athletes where only a handful of them even became starters in the NFL. So when you're watching NFL games, you're watching a cut down from a huge group of people who seriously attempted to play football.

Sure lots of people play video games, but how many people seriously train for competitive (fill in the blank with your game of choice)?

I don't think it's necessarily *ethnocentric*. I would use the same term for a number of people of different ethnicities if those people were originally US citizens.

Also tbf, I don't inherently think of the term "expat" in positive terms. Usually I think of someone taking advantage of economic disparity to live in a country where their money goes much higher, without any expectation of truly becoming a citizen of the country.

Biased anecdotally, but I usually hear "expat" used for people of the US living elsewhere and "immigrant" used for people moving to the US.

Like I think it would be weird for me as someone in the US to refer to someone from the US moving elsewhere as an "American immigrant", but that's because there's something about the language that is "leaving my country" vs "joining my country" if that distinction makes sense.

I had a five year relationship with a professor in my department when I was in grad school and then had a three year relationship with a coworker after that.

Otherwise I don't know how you would ever get "caught" for AI generated photos, outside of sharing them. Some AI models can be run entirely offline, so you can generate all the e.g. copyright infringing material you want and at no point would you be leaving a digital trail.

This is the same way that no one would ever catch you printing photos of your students from publicly available sources and then using a scissors/glue to put them on top of swimsuit models in your Sports Illustrated magazine or something weird like that.

There has to be a step in the process where you either use something online, tell someone, etc. (or in this case this is probably just a catch that came from his acquisition of child pornography from other people).

Am I misreading or did he have "real" child porn in addition to generated images of his students?

I'm assuming the criminal trial in Manhattan is now set for April 15th since the judge delated it for 30 days as of March 15th. There is a March 25th hearing for the discovery concerns.

What is the Manhattan trial? I think I accidentally have conflating the civil here and details about the criminal.
