TopicLet's be real, is life worth living?
Alkaloid
02/20/18 1:29:50 AM
#26
You know, the saddest thing about death is that you'll never be alive again. All those memories, ideas, and experiences will just vanish when the lights go out in your head.

And all the things you leave behind end up divided among your family or sold to strangers.

And unless you achieve greatness, no one will keep your memory alive once your grandkids die. Because they'll have kids and grandkids who will never ask about you, because to them you never existed.

I guess that's why everyone loves social media. All that shit you post online will last until the servers die or your family requests your accounts be destroyed. It's the only legacy most people will have.

What a legacy to leave. A bunch of pictures of food you ate. Workout selfies. Vague bullshit fishing for concern. The occasional argument. Dead memes. Inside jokes. What a life. At least your work and relationship history is there. Unless you hide it, or never put it up. Funny how we conceal the important stuff.

And usually I'd just delete this draft and go to bed, but CE purges within a week anyway, and the post is so long nobody will read it.

May as well live while you're living. You don't get a second chance, and you'll die regardless.

Ok, I played it again, and gold starred level 2. I definitely liked the game more this time than previously (probably because 1B forced me to git gud at the basic stuff)

I hope the chase gimmick doesn't come back (but it probably will because it's terrible to play around. I can already imagine an entire B side dedicated to it)

I'm not gonna touch 2B. 500+ deaths on 1B over two hours was not a fun time.

I bought it at launch, got a gold star on the first level, did B-side 1, and decided that precision platformers are not my genre. I may come back to it, but there are way too many other games I want to play to get hung up on a platformer with a learning curve this steep.

But you're making a bad assumption. If the number is not specified, you must assume it's unknown. He could just as easily have 52 cards, or an infinite number of cards.

All that matters is that any given draw has a ~14% chance of being what you want.

This is easily proven false by looking at pokemon encounter rates.

Beldum has a 1/10 chance of appearing in the grass of Mt. Holukani in Gen 7. But it took me significantly more than 10 encounters to find one. (I didn't count, but it was over 30.)

Ergo, you cannot simply multiply the rate by the trials.

Also, Admiral is correct that the number of cards doesn't matter. (Similarly, the number of pokemon doesn't matter; it's infinite.) We can still draw conclusions based entirely upon the rate and number of trials, assuming (as he said) that we draw from the same pool of cards each time.

I actually prefer short RPGs. I never want to start a new one because it's such a huge time sink. Do I really want to spend three months of free time on a 100 hour RPG? No. Usually no. There's like ten fun platformers I could play instead, and be more engaged in playing because the skill ceiling is higher.

But you have to admit, OOT is full of poor or at least uninteresting puzzles.

The vast majority of puzzles are

Find (and hit) the switch (ALTTP classic)
Kill every enemy (OG Zelda represent!)
Light all the torches (another classic ALTTP puzzle)
Collect five silver rupees (original idea for Zelda, but overused in OOT)
Play the Ocarina (lifted from LA)

These are all tedious bullshit chores, either learned behavior from prior Zelda experience, or new ideas that are introduced and then driven into the ground with nontransformative variation.

Some of the best original puzzles are actually in the first dungeon, involving the spider webs.

Fall from the ceiling to break a web? That's a smart puzzle. Navi spoils it, but it's something that's both logical and creative.

Swing a lit Deku stick to burn a web beneath you? Smart puzzle. Once the dungeon establishes that you can light a stick and that fire burns webs, this is the next logical conclusion.

Compared to "hit the switch I hid behind a fake wall and the door opens", I think it's clear which is better designed.

If you didn't want a discussion, why did you engage?

Yeah, sure, there are tons of tedious bullshit puzzles that are more like chores (see: Tales of Symphonia, Ocarina of Time, any adventure game made by Sierra) but there's plenty of gameplay to be had that is essentially puzzle solving outside of these chores.

Like getting through a Metroid like platformer, where the puzzle is learning what you can use to get where. Or fighting bosses in a game like Furi or Shadow of the Colossus, where the puzzle is figuring out where or when you can attack. And of course you have precision platformers like Super Meat Boy where the hardest stages are essentially puzzles where you have to figure out how to reach the end of the level. (Actually I take that back: platforming in SMB is a tedious bullshit chore.)

I just think the OP and further posts ITT have this bizarre perception of puzzles = tedious bullshit chores, and I wanted to provide some counterpoint.

But I will admit, there are a lot of tedious bullshit chores in a lot of games. Ocarina of Time in particular is a game that is solely about doing tedious bullshit chores in every single dungeon. And I think that mindless approach to puzzle design was a great detriment to 3D gaming, since that influence is still being felt today.

I mean, you can say a puzzle only has one solution, but that's wrong.

Hell, even the dictionary disagrees. "Designed to test ingenuity or knowledge."

Take a look at Breath of the Wild. The puzzles in that game usually have multiple solutions, because a lot of them are about playing with the game physics. Sure, they all have "intended" solutions, but the player can approach them however they wish.

Or how about Portal? That game's puzzles have multiple approaches because it's all about spatial reasoning.

And then you have games like Super Metroid, where the intended logical item progression can be subverted just by "getting good" at your jumping options.

I think your issue is more with a type of puzzle design (which is rampant in JRPGs and adventure games in particular) rather than with puzzles generally.

I guess it ultimately depends on your definition of a puzzle, but most types of games are all about problem solving.

So to say a puzzle is unwelcome in a game is to defeat the purpose of playing. May as well pick up a VN.

Also, don't give the DM any ideas. So, don't say "I hope there's not..." because any decent DM will adjust the scenario. "I hope there's not a scorpion in this chest!" Always leads to there being a scorpion in the chest, even if there wasn't originally.

Sure, so three names comes from the rarely used double sharp (x) and double flat (bb).

D can also be Cx or Ebb
A can also be Gx or Bbb

And so forth. G#/Ab is the exception because there are no double sharps nor double flats that result in that pitch.

The double accidental is primarily used in highly chromatic music that has been written in a key with a lot of sharps or flats. This is mostly seen in 19th century works, as from the 20th and on common practice has been to not use a key signature and just put accidentals on everything in order to improve readability in those highly chromatic contexts.
