I'll put an extremely summarized version here, in spoiler tags, to simplify and give you a sense of what to look for:
Earth had reached perfection. There was no war and humanity had literally mastered creation magic, meaning they could create new life. The whole world was constantly in pursuit of knowledge and growth and things were great. Then a horrible calamity threatened to destroy the planet and in a desperate gambit 50% of the population was sacrificed to summon a god to stay the end times. However, before that god could be used again to bring back those that died (by sacrificing children), a rogue faction summoned a different god to stop them which split reality into 14 different shards. Each of these shards was its own earth with its own people, but those people were far weaker and more frail. They suffered, starved, went to war, were racist, etc... in many ways those 14 shards were barely a shadow of what humanity had once been. The main conflict in Shadowbringers is between the few remnants of those original people trying to set into motion a plan that would see those 14 "shard" planets reunited. It would mean killing literally everyone on all those other planets, but would restore their perfect paradise and bring back all those who had been sacrificed to save their own world. Given that you and your friends exist on one of those shards, you have to stop them. Further complicating things, those original people were also fractured into 14 pieces, so basically every character is a fraction of a soul from an original being.

So it's sort of like a reverse-Eternals. It asks which is more worthy of existing: those that currently are but exist in worlds full of suffering and strive, or those that were (and could still be) and their perfect world. Both sides are literally fighting to save their people but it requires killing the other side's people to do so.
