Plus, if I recall, it really should have been titled 'Kung-Fu Kid'.

Basically. Karate is Japanese, but the entire movie is set in China and he's trained by a Chinese mentor because the Chinese film market has way more money than the Japanese do.

It's essentially kind of racist on the part of the execs that okayed it, because it's basically saying all Asian people are the same.

Zeus posted...
The more glaring cash-grab and star-making vehicle ones like this tend to be bad, though.

The problem is, that's pretty much what all reboots and remakes are today.

Once upon a time directors would do remakes because they loved the original and wanted to remake it for a new audience, or because they saw flaws in it and thought they could do it better, because the "original" was itself an adaptation of a different work (usually books) and the remake director wants to make something more faithful to the original work, etc.

Now pretty much every remake and reboot ever is made solely because studios are terrified of risk and desperately want to exploit the name recognition and nostalgia of older popular intellectual property. And they tend to wind up being shit because no one involved in the production actually gives a shit about the content beyond the name.

Don't really have any. When I was a kid I never played games on Thanksgiving because I'd go to my grandmother's house for the meal, and that predated sophisticated handheld gaming, so I didn't bring anything with me.

By later in life, I focused more on actual social interaction rather than gaming. And then even later in life, after I mostly stopped celebrating Thanksgiving in general, it sort of became just another day and I don't really differentiate my memories from the day from my memories of any other day.

The only thing I've ever really waited on line for was a signing in NYC - Depeche Mode was in town for a concert (which I already had tickets for), and they did a meet & greet the day before. I showed up around noon and got on line, and waited until around 9pm for the store to open and the line to move up enough for me to get in, get my stuff signed, and spend all of 15 seconds saying hello to the band and shaking hands before getting shuffled off like everyone else.

(I didn't mind, though - it was a nice enough day, and I mostly just spent the whole time reading Foucault's Pendulum, so the time passed quickly for me.)

I'm usually too impatient to wait for things, though. Generally if a line is going to last more than a few minutes I just give up on whatever the thing was and just leave (and come back later when less people are there if possible). Even at amusement parks, I tend to avoid popular rides to avoid lines, and I even go to the DMV on off-peak hours so I can generally just get in and out quickly.

Basically, you know, life.

The only school years I actively disliked was middle school, and that only lasted like 3 years. And it was mostly because it was an awkward adjustment from elementary school because of how our school system worked. But even that wasn't total hell or anything.

I know it's the stereotype that most Internet nerds hate school because all they have are memories of getting stuffed into lockers by the cool kids or just picked on constantly, but that was never really a thing for me. I was probably the bully more often than I was the one getting bullied.

While this is true, does it really help if you cant see the dislikes? Especially since you cant always tell whats a lot and whats not without the comparison.

Because with just likes, I cant really tell if the video will be good or bad before watching

Absolutely, yes. Because it creates the artificial impression that something is more popular than it actually is. Which is the entire reason why they'll keep it.

Does it help you accurately gauge what is worth your time and what isn't, or what is quality versus crap? No, it's useless for that. But again, YouTube doesn't give a fuck about you. They don't give a fuck whether or not you can use the system to actually find worthwhile content. Because that is no longer the point of the service.

The like counter will continue to exist to give you the impression that the videos they present to you are popular, trendy, and that your peers like them (and you want to be like your peers, don't you?) - and you will lap them up like the good little sheep you are. Because that is the sole purpose of your existence in their eyes. Having free will and voicing opinions is incredibly inconvenient for them, because it makes the corporate sponsors sad.

This is an ongoing problem, and something a lot of larger content creators on YouTube have been complaining about almost since Google took over - the site caters to advertisers over uses (both viewers and performers), to the detriment of the quality of the content. Because the sole purpose of the site now is to generate revenue for Google, and Google gave up on their "Don't be evil" philosophy a looong time ago.

It's why a lot of former big-time YouTubers are migrating to Twitch more and more (though Twitch isn't all that much better right now) or leaning more and more heavily into Patreon or in-video ad reads. Because they basically need to to survive as professional content creators. The platform is constantly screwing them over in myriad ways.

Oh I'm sure the'll come up with a good excuse for removing likes next. And comments after that.

They won't. Because likes are useful for propaganda purposes, especially when they can be artificially inflated. Companies like likes.

Comments can already be disabled, and will likely continue to be disabled on deliberate marketing videos (in the same way Reddit prevents people from commenting on ad posts). Because the last thing companies want is tons and tons of people crapping on their product in the comments. Unless they're willing to moderate their own comments... in which case they'll just delete all the comments crapping on their product, and leave the positive ones (some of which they probably posted themselves via paid shill accounts) to make their video look far better received than it actually was.

Make no mistake, nearly every policy decision or feature YouTube makes is mostly to appeal to larger corporations and how they can use YouTube as an advertising platform. Google doesn't give a shit about the actual content, and even less of a shit about content creators.

Skyrim and Witcher 3 are just the obvious easy answers everyone will agree to.

Ehh. I'm not sure I would - Skyrim is more comfort food than something awesome. It was accessible and it's easy, which is where the appeal lies. I'm not sure I'd say it was the best. Even if Bethesda has kept re-releasing it on every console and platform they can over and over for the last 10 years, which kind of makes it feel like an even bigger deal than it was.

As for the Witcher... sure, it's a huge, sprawling game, with a deep narrative, and but it certainly had its flaws. And a fair number of people burned out on it before the end. There are definitely RPGs I enjoyed more (if we're sticking to purely subjective standards).

And even speaking as someone who almost exclusively plays RPGs and other story-heavy games these days, I'm not sure everyone would agree those sorts of games are "the best". So I could see someone who said the top three games were like Binding of Isaac, Hotline Miami, and Crypt of the Necrodancer or something.

Then again, I can't come up with a top 3 list at all, because I tend to not hierarchically rank games. I can tell you whether I hated/loved/liked/was apathetic about a given game, but I have a lot of trouble trying to say "I liked X game better than Y game". My brain just generally doesn't think that way, especially since which game I like more can change depending on my mood (or other factors).

So yeah, if you work hard enough, you can potentially get in better shape and look much better, but still weigh more than you did when you started.

Now granted, if the only weight you put on was also fat, then yes, you're not exercising very well.

Personally, I just don't do raids in MMOs because I grew up in an era when you played video games to get away from other people. Video gaming is something you do alone, or occasionally with friends on the same couch, not something you do with a dozen strangers from all around the world.

I know that mentality has changed (especially for a lot of younger gamers), but I'm still sort of in the old mindset.

It's why I mostly avoid MMOs at all. And even when I do play them (like ESO or GTA:O), I mainly just stick to solo'ing the single-player content anyway. Which means I'm pretty much permanently locked out of raids and larger group instances that are designed to be extremely difficult unless you're with a group and coordinating tactics.

For me the problem there is that, whereas KH1 is a fun combination of Final Fantasy characters I like combined with the childhood nostalgia of Disney characters, KH3 is mostly focused on their OC DONUT STEEL characters and backstory that I don't give a shit about, plus mostly modern Disney and Pixar characters I don't give a shit about.

It also doesn't help that the games sort of expect you to play the 47 other side-titles mostly only released on the DS to get the full story. Yeah, I'm not doing that. It was annoying enough when KH2 referenced back to Chain of Memories so much. I ain't got time for your shit, Nomura.

comic book peter parker is a early mid 30 year old college graduate

Yeah, but even Marvel hates that interpretation. Which is why 99% of the time, when you get something outside of the comics, he's in high school.

It's why they magicked away his marriage. Quesada's entirely argument was that being married made him "too old" to relate to. But divorce would make him feel even older and less relatable. And just killing MJ off and making him a widower would be even worse, because that makes him feel old and kills off a popular character.

So obviously the only possible fix was to have him make a deal with the devil to sacrifice his marriage to save the life of his 99-year old aunt who has a heart attack every couple years anyway.

It's the same reason they did the Clone Saga back in the 90s - the original intention was always to have the clone turn out to be the real Peter, so the Peter who married MJ could retire and go off to live his life while we'd get a younger, more dynamic Peter who was able to date again and do young people things. The only reason they walked back on it was because the backlash was so strong.

And, of course, when they did the Ultimate line, it was pretty much built around a younger Spider-Man in high school. At least until they killed him off and replaced him with an even younger black kid.

Personally, I'm half-waiting for them to eventually do a storyline where Peter is magically de-aged to 16 and has to go back to high school. Because that's what they really want.

but it built up within the one book rather than being an afterthought; albeit it took too long to get to this point because of books six through eight (and some of five). Rand had a goal, his allies had to be talked into going on this dangerous venture, and the Dark Ones had their generic "Kill the good guys, especially now" goal.

That's where I'd disagree, though. The "build up" felt exactly like all the other filler before it. Which is why the ending feels like it comes so utterly out of nowhere.

There's basically a moment where Rand goes "Okay, it's time to stop dicking around and just DO it", which is more or less how the entire audience has been feeling for years at that point. But when it happens the entire plot floors the accelerator out of nowhere.

It's not really a natural and slow-building progression, it's the equivalent of procrastinating for two weeks and then finishing your term paper the night before it's due.

The plot is basically plateaued for multiple books, then it dramatically spikes, then it mostly goes right back to the plateau.

I've mentioned this in other contexts before, but I think a lot of that sort of mentality comes down to the fact that there's more media in the world today than ever before in history. More than any one person could ever hope to consume even in a much longer lifetime.

So with so many options and so many choices, there's really no reason to suffer through something that isn't exciting you. Whether it's a game or a show or a book or something else, you can always move on and find something far more interesting and fun with minimal effort.

It's why I always say I don't like "Frustration Gaming" (ie, games like Dark Souls), where you fail 99 times so that the 1 time you succeed is a much stronger rush. I no longer have the time or patience for gameplay like that - I'd rather get the lesser rush from succeeding 99 times out of 100 in a game that is interesting in other ways (which is why I tend to play story-heavy games on the most casual difficulty - I get far more out of them that way).

If something doesn't grab you immediately, there are a thousand other things screaming for your attention at all times. And the older you get, the less free time you have to devote to any of it. There's no time to indulge mediocrity.

Eh, I'd argue more that the main conflict was reduced to formulaic boss battle of the week, the filler went to harsh extremes, that nine showed hope for salvation, then ten happened to the dismay and jeers of the fanbase, and Jordan was like "Fine, I will work on finishing this series!" Then he wrote the return-to-form eleven, started twelve with a truckload of notes, and died.

Nah, I feel like 9 was just as bad as the rest. It just tricks you into thinking it's better because he throws out the "Oh yeah, I totally accomplished the biggest miracle in the entire series as a throwaway in the last couple chapters. Whee!" thing.

The irony is, in a series that takes 40 chapters to tell story most other authors could tell in 2, the most important event in the entire series comes across feeling like a rushed afterthought. It's about the only thing in the entire franchise I wish he'd actually spent more time on.

But it tricks you because it jars you awake for the first time in multiple books, and gets you going "Oh shit, wait, stuff is happening again?!" But then the next book is mostly just "Hah hah, fooled you" and you go back to sleep.

The main reason why people complained about 10 more than previous books is because it was the first time in years that they came out of their apathy comas.

Book ten is definitely the worst of the bunch. Feels like nothing happens in it.

You've just described books 7-11.

After the first few books, it became obvious that Jordan was just padding them out with more and more filler and constantly added new characters and plot points so he never had to pay off on any of the existing ones. Because he realized just how hard he could milk this series that was only supposed to be a trilogy in the first place.

It was one of the reasons why Sanderson taking over was a welcome relief - he actually finished things.

No, but I also thought the first movie was mediocre, so it's not as if I was in-step with "mainstream opinion" in the first place.

I am one of the people who thought the Phantom Menace trailer looked awesome and then was vastly disappointed by the final movie, though.
