Dick Grayson was fucking bland for much of his original run

Most people love him because of all the stuff he's done since becoming Nightwing. And the fact that he's sort of become a memetic sex-god where it's implied that pretty much everyone in the DC universe wants to fuck him.

Blighboy posted...
Pretty sure it was Dick in TAS? Unless Tim appears in later episodes that I'm forgetting

The episodes where Robin is voiced by Loren Lester (basically the first two seasons) is Dick.

The final season (the one usually refered to as "The New Batman Adventures") turns Dick into Nightwing and introduces Tim as Robin.

And, of course, Tim's the Robin in Return of the Joker...

EvilMegas posted...
It's not that big of a deal for people to get this upset. Literally no one liked Tim Drake or Red Robin before this.

Comic fans did. Tim was fairly popular among people who actually read comics. It's just the mainstream audience who only really knows Batman from the films and cartoons who tend to default to Dick.

It's the same deal with Barbara Gordon as Batgirl - she was a much better character as Oracle, and both Stephanie and Cassandra Cain were more interesting Batgirls - but the average person mostly only knows Barbara as Batgirl, so anything resembling character development, legacy characters, or actual story progression in the comics has to get shoveled into the furnace so they can go back to having Barbara as Batgirl.

Arguably it's a large part of why some comic fans have stopped being comic fans. In the Iron Man comic, Pepper Potts was a minor love interest in the 60s who eventually married Happy and was shuffled out of the comic for nearly 50 years. But then she was a major character in the movie so the comics felt like they had to include her, so suddenly out of nowhere they had her divorce her husband, move back into Tony's life, and suddenly become a far more significant character than she'd ever been before in the desperate hope that at least some of the people who liked the movie would start buying the comics (which never really works).

There's no reason to care about characters in comics anymore, because none of their stories will ever lead to actual change or growth, and they'll all be radically retconned the next time a popular film or cartoon comes out involving those characters.

I'm more apt to start avoiding companies whose bad decisions are resulting in their games becoming crap (Bioware, Bungie) or because a company adds elements to games that make me find the games repulsive (EA) than I am because I object to the behavior of a company or its employees in the real world.

If I took strong stances against employers exploiting employees or engaging in shady business practices, I'd have to give up modern society entirely and go live in the wilderness.

There's always been at least some implication that Tim was bi already. There was a storyline years ago where they kind of hinted that his feelings for Superboy might be a lot stronger than just "friendship".

If they're going to do sexuality retconning, I'd much rather they make people bi than gay, though. Because it's easier to justify "Well, he just happens to like some guys as well as women" than it is to justify "No, he just likes dudes, only dudes, exclusively dudes" when you've shown a character solely being interested in women for like 40+ years (and doubly so because in comics, we can HEAR people's thoughts).

Like, if they made Peter Parker gay tomorrow, it would be like "Wait, so in 60 years worth of stories, which was something like 15+ years worth of his in-universe life, where he was in relationships with like two dozen women, and where he has never had a single sexual thought about men but has repeatedly been infatuated with women, now he can't get off to women at all and is only interested in guys? That's kind of bullshit." And no, "Oh, he's just been really, really, really deep in denial but now he accepts his true self!" isn't really a great counter-justification.

Conversely, Northstar (who was always kind of written as a closeted gay man) comes out, and most people are like "Ehh, makes sense." And then there are characters who are newly introduced as gay right out of the gate (like Wiccan and Hulkling), where most people are "Ehh, fine, cool, whatever." Or even older characters who were never really established as having much sexuality can start to express as whatever and most people don't mind because it isn't contradicting previously established continuity.

The problem is, most of the time this sort of thing is done as a PR stunt by companies who are hemorrhaging readers away, in a desperate attempt to draw in new readers via shock outrage or pandering. So they deliberately choose characters that make no sense and that will prompt backlash because the backlash is what they want, not organic storytelling. And because they're more focused on the reaction than the narrative, the writing tends to be shallow as fuck, and even the people they're trying to attract don't care enough to start reading.

And then you get stuff like people complaining about how Jean Grey made Iceman gay.

It'll make things a lot simpler and more direct to just have 1 global time.

Idc if 3am is the middle of the day for China

You're assuming China wouldn't call dibs on universal time.

The most likely scenario would be that "absolute time" would be split somewhere between China and India (so nearly half the global population would get to be close to the expected time, and everyone else would get fucked).

The only other realistic alternative is that Europe can argue hard enough to keep GMT as the primary time zone, though that sort of shit might not fly in the modern world.

Either way, the US would get fucked hard in that scenario.

Doubly so, since there've actually been studies that imply time of day can have a huge impact on things like psychological health and productivity (they usually get brought up whenever someone starts talking about getting rid of Daylight Savings Time).

Regardless, the minor things that get simplified by a single universe time would be offset by the tons of way more important things that get absolutely fucked over in the transition to it, so almost no nation on Earth would ever agree to it. Similar to how the US still refuses to adopt the Metric System or how countries with left-hand drive (probably about 30% of the world's population) refuse to switch to the right.

Modern cities, especially in North America, are designed around car ownership. It's one of the biggest mismanagement of resources in human history.

Correcting it either requires a huge increase in buses (as well as an increase in comfort and quality on those buses, God I'm glad my 40 foot limo days are over) or completely redesigning cities (not even possible).

This, very much.

But even worse than cities, the entire concept of the suburbs revolves almost entirely around cars. There are plenty of places in the US where you will pretty much die without a car of your own. To change that, you would have to radically restructure both the infrastructure and economy of the world in ways that are borderline impossible without causing a dynamic crisis.

People act like the last year and a half were the worst thing any human has ever had to endure. There's pretty much zero chance those people would be willing to endure the sort of radical lifestyle changes necessarily to eliminate cars.

It's part of why even pro-driverless car advocates have admitted in the past that a full driverless future is probably unlikely (at least in our lifetimes), and that the more likely scenario is a focus on driverless public transport. A slow incremental changeover would probably take decades to get to the point of eliminating personal transport entirely, but it's also about the only way it would ever feasibly work.

faramir77 posted...
Let's just hope we can get a clean, reliable, abundant, and affordable way of producing individual vehicles that run on a renewable power source.

Even if they were completely equal in other ways, this would still be the far more important factor than whether or not cars are driverless, because the environmental impact of driverless cars would still be fairly significant. And most people who advocate for scaled back car usage don't really consider the major impact of product transport and delivery - planes, trains, boats, and trucks are more or less in constant motion in the modern world, using resources and producing waste. You'd have to start converting all of those over to clean energy alternatives as well, not just people's personal vehicles.

But even if we were able to completely convert every vehicle in the world to clean alternatives and every transport and personal vehicle was completely automated, then you'd have the added problem of all the people who used to drive for a living now out of work. Which is where you start getting into discussions about things like universal basic income.

People who think problems are easy to solve and advocate for the easiest, most obvious solution usually just create new problems for the next batch of people to have to fix. Especially in the modern world, most big problems are more a tangled mess of integrated systems rather than a single point of failure, and require far more thinking and complex solutions than people are willing to commit to.

GameFaqs believes streaming movies over the internet is piracy

Probably because it technically is.

Unless you're watching something through explicitly official channels, or the thing in question is specifically hosted on a free site by the owners of the IP (or if the IP has no owners because it's public domain), that's literally piracy.

You can disagree over the morality or ethics of it, whether or not "information should be free", or whatever other argument you like, but at the end of the day none of that actually matters when a corporation is obligated to legally cover its own ass to avoid being held responsible for the illegal activities of its users.

Even if Ant-Man could do the Thanos thing he'd still die horribly (props if you know what I'm talking about).

He wouldn't, necessarily. The implication with Ant-Man is that his density increases (hence why you see him break tiles when he falls on them in the movie, why he can punch as strong as a full-sized man even tiny, etc).

As long as the increased strength of Ant-Man's density remained stronger than Thanos' internal fortitude, Ant-Man would be fine (it would be like an adult human punching their way out of a paper bag).

It's only really at the point where Ant-Man's decreasing density as he expands crosses the threshold of Thanos' resistance that it would shift from Ant-Man punching his way out to Ant-Man being crushed.

And if Ant-Man was angled right, he'd probably punch out through Thanos' front and back long before he hits crush pressure, at which point he could probably just crawl the rest of the way out.

its almost as if all of the games are in the same series

Its almost as if this doesn't actually defend the premise.

Plenty of other series either come up with new settings every game (a la Final Fantasy), or are much more consistent in using the same setting (ie, establishing a map of the world/setting bible and actually sticking to it). Or series that do both (like Dragon Quest).

DirtBasedSoap posted...
can you believe they went to another halo ring in halo 2 and 3? such lazy developers.

That actually supports my point. They went out of their way to establish that there was more than one Halo in the setting, which allowed them to create new maps that were still internally consistent.

They put effort into world-building, not just reusing old character and place names over and over in different ways. You don't have to use mental gymnastics or convoluted time-travel shenanigans to try and explain how Halo 1 relates to Halo 2 or Halo 3. "Yep, there are multiple Halos, and they're not identical." Boom, now you can change things up all you want. And you can still have action taking place on entirely different planets, in different installations, or whatever.

To use your example as a metaphor, imagine playing Halo but there's an in-game map that shows you that the Silent Cartographer is in the north, the Library is in the south, and the whole ring orbits a gas giant. And then they followed that up with a Halo 2 set on the same ring, except now with no explanation the Cartographer is in the south, the Library is in the east in the middle of a vast desert, and the ring is orbiting a black hole. And then in Halo 3 it's the same ring again, but now the Cartographer is in the west, the Library is in the north in the middle of a volcano, and the ring is orbiting a binary star and has a massive asteroid floating in the middle of its loops. And none of those changes are ever explained, and are more treated as something that doesn't actually matter.

Keep in mind, it's not necessarily a terrible thing to not care about establishing an internally consistent or unique setting. But it indicates that Nintendo didn't really give a shit about that sort of thing early on, until the fanbase wouldn't shut the fuck up about it. They were more focused on the gameplay than the setting.
