Remind me, was it "half of all sentient life" or "half of each sentient species"?

A better question is, does he really mean "sentient life", or is he making the same mistake every non-scientist makes when writing sci-fi and he's confusing "sentient" with "sapient"? Because that's a big difference.

He definitely didn't halve ALL life (because we don't see like half the trees immediately disappear), so presumably he's drawing the line somewhere, but they're pretty vague on precisely where he's drawing the line.

Most dialogue from other people implies he's only killing fully self-aware species, but that could just be their own bias showing, because people get way more riled up if you're killing people than they will if you're also killing cows or insects or bacteria.

The better question is why no one has an issue with the fact that 99.44% of all human history is built on taking cultural ideas from other people and synthesizing them into new traditions and ideas, but now we're 12000 years deep into the human and it's suddenly an enormous issue.

Which, I also thought didn't make sense anyways (Will being mad), since Will basically went full-on pirate since at least the end of the 1st movie, and makes it pretty clear he thinks Jack is expendable in 2 & 3. So him being mad at Elizabeth joining the pirate party, and her being concerned he wouldn't like it is kinda at odds with, like, everything they do.

Ehh, I can see it from two points of view.

First, it's entirely possible for someone to be morally flexible yet still be pissed at someone else for being the same, especially if you expect better of them. On some level, Will has always idolized Elizabeth and put her on a pedestal, so getting his nose rubbed into the fact that she can be just as low and base as the rest of them could easily sting a bit. It's the moment when he realizes the image of her he loves has feet of clay, as it were.

Second, Will is still very much a good man. He's about the least pirate-y main character (his motives in the first movie revolve almost entirely around Elizabeth and his motives in the sequels revolve almost entirely around saving his dad). What few pirate traits he does have are mostly surface at best, and he still tends to try and do right by people unless they've done wrong by him (even most of his attempts to screw over Jack are in situations where Jack brought it on himself and kind of shouldn't have been interfering in the first place). If anything, Will's a contrast with most of the actual villains of the sequels, who are clearly very bad men who hide their evil behind the veneer of being civilized and respectable.

(In a sense, Jack fits that mold as well, albeit less well - for all that he talks a good game and is constantly willing to scheme or betray to his own advantage, he does still do the right thing in the end to save Will. Part of why Jack gets to be one of the good guys and not just another villain is because he does clearly have some degree of loyalty and honor, even if it's pretty tarnished, and incredibly flexible.)

So it's not really a stretch to see Will as being annoyed because on some level he feels guilty that they betrayed Jack, mad at Elizabeth for being willing to make that choice, and mad at her on top of that for lying to him about it. Not enough for him to be like "We're done forever! I never want to see you again!", but enough for him to be a bit pissy with her about it for a while.

That said, a lot of the hosts don't really need the buzz because they're already prestigious cities (although some want it to make themselves look like they're on the same level as other places -- like Salt Lake City), but some countries want to legitimize themselves by hosting the Olympics or the world cup.

Yeah, but the point is that there's really only two reasons to want to be a host city/nation - either increased prestige, or increased tourism money. Neither of which seems to actually pay off for anyone anymore, thus raising the question of why anyone bothers at this point.

It kind of feels like people are still chasing after their memory of the way things used to be more than the reality of today. Which raises the question of what happens once people start waking up and realizing just how pointless it is to chase after the "honor".

They didnt get married but she clearly had something going on for Jack for no reason at all

Is that even what they're really trying to imply there, though?

The implication seems more to be that she's pretending to have something for Jack, so she can manipulate him into doing what she wants. And then later she feels guilty about it not because it conflicts with how she feels about Will, but because she's afraid Will will be mad at her for being that callous (which is essentially exactly what happens).

If anything, I'd argue that Elizabeth's entire narrative line in the second and third movie is that she's slowly turning into a pirate, with all that entails.

I like to support the local athletes that work extremely hard to be used as pawns in international power plays beyond their understanding.

The IOC is a toxic entity, the idea of the Olympics is admirable, but the amount of money that just disappears into partners pockets is absurd.

The worst part is that all of the cities/nations that fight so hard to try and bribe the IOC into naming them a host city don't even benefit from it, because for the last few decades it seems like no one ever recoups enough money from the Olympics to pay for the Olympics. So they all wind up in debt, with these arenas that just wind up rotting where they stand, and with no real way to ever make back the money they've spent (wasted).

And it's not even like there's an argument that they gain prestige or influence based on having been a host city, because people these days barely give a shit, and rarely even remember who the past host cities were.

And I'd occasionally watch soccer (mostly just World Cup in the tournament stage). Most other sports have always bored me (and I suspect I only ever really found hockey and soccer interesting because I played both while I was in high school/college).

But pretty much everything I used to watch found ways to piss off, annoy, or otherwise drive me away (mainly by being boring), so at this point I have no real interest in any sports.

I kind of hope England loses today, though, because the never-ending torment and pain of the English is far more amusing than the smug self-congratulatory gloating they'll be doing for the next few weeks if they win.

Like it baffles me that so many video game films barely or sometimes have nothing to do with the source material.

It's because most film directors have an innate sense of superiority and pretentious dismissal of "video games" as anything worthwhile, so they always feel like they can "improve" video game stories.

But most directors also have an overinflated sense of their own worth, so the things they come up with often wind up being worse than what they started with.

It also doesn't help when Hollywood execs will say things like "Hey, throw a giant robot spider in the movie" in an attempt to put their own stamp on things, without regard to how it relates to the story being told.

It's the same problem comic book movies have always had. It's rare that you find a filmmaker that actually cares about/likes the source material enough to try and tell the story in a way that reflects well on the original story, as opposed to trying to dismissively do their own thing.

And even beyond that, video games have a problem that books and comics don't - which is, the narrative structure of "interactive storytelling" is different from a normal story, and there are elements of it that won't effectively translate into a linear story. A story that works in a 10-hour game that mostly consists of the player shooting aliens isn't necessarily going to work in a 2-hour movie.

lihlih posted...
What's the point of making a video game film if you're going to change everything about it?

It's because the only thing they care about is the name recognition. The idea being that you can get fans of the game to go see the movie no matter what the movie is like, because they're already fans of the brand.

That's a much less successful strategy in modern times with Twitter and the Internet in general allowing for instance movie-reviews (and pre-release leaks giving away large parts of a movie's premise/plot even before anyone spends a single dime), so audiences can avoid shitty films like the plague regardless of branding, deceptive trailers, or marketing hype - but it takes a long time for that sort of awareness to percolate through the brains of Hollywood execs. Especially since most of them don't even remotely give a shit about whether or not a movie is good as long as it can make money (if not in the US, then at least in China).

We mostly just believed they were giving little girls steroids so they could win at gymnastics in the Olympics.

Though granted, considering the US was actually running programs to use LSD to brainwash people and to use telepaths to spy on people and murder them with their minds, it was definitely a bit of a ridiculous time.

Not sure how since that was before I started reading comics.

Not that one.

He's talking about Secret Wars (2015), which is entirely different from and mostly unrelated to Secret Wars 1 (1984) and Secret Wars II (1985). Not the least of which by virtue of the fact that the first two were actually good, whereas Secret Wars (2015)... wasn't.

Basically, Marvel is pretty much creatively bankrupt and is recycling the names of old crossovers (hence why they did Civil War II as well), and generally just shitting out bad idea after bad idea in the comics, in the hopes of coming up with something they can eventually use in the movies someday. But it's not a coincidence that most of the stories the movies/tv shows are mining for ideas are comic stories from 20+ years ago. There really aren't all that many newer stories that are worthwhile. And almost none from the last 12 years or so.

Secret Wars (2015) screwed up the multiverse in the sense that the plot involved destroying every single universe in all of existence, and then recreating them afterward, so it could serve as a sort of soft-reset on continuity (sort of like what DC has been doing every 10 years since the 1980s). At the end of the day it doesn't really mean much, though, because writers are completely free to ignore whatever they want anyway.

I think the implication is that Davy Jones has all the time in the world to go wherever he wants and do whatever he wants whenever he wants because he's explicitly not doing his job (hence the curse).

If Will is doing his job and ferrying souls, he presumably doesn't have time to constantly meet Elizabeth. If he skipped a day of work he'd technically be triggering the curse as well, and then he'd wind up all fishy too.

Most buildings that only have a couple floors or so rarely have blatantly signage. That's more for buildings where you absolutely need to take an elevator, but smaller buildings might easily only have stairs, or not really require you to use an elevator.

If someone tells you to meet them on the first floor, that could absolutely cause confusion if you're both thinking of two different things when someone says that.

Because if they admitted that they'd have fewer things to be offended about.

All I can think of when seeing that account name is "d'accord" in French.

Is that for me at least, its a lot easier to fall asleep

Most of the older people I know find the reverse to be true. Trouble getting to sleep, trouble staying asleep, waking up too early and not being able to get back to sleep, getting up multiple times a night to have to pee, etc. I know multiple people who've had to be prescribed things to help them sleep because it was causing them issues.

You technically need less sleep as you get older (though it's more complicated than that, and involves different proportions of REM/non-REM sleep), but the overall quality of your sleep can still be an issue. And if your sleeping pattern is screwed up, you can wind up having way less energy through the day as well. So you basically wind up being tired way more often, but never being able to get the right amount of sleep to ever really fix it.

The other super-fun thing you may notice as you get older is that you have less energy in general than you used to. Did you used to have fun pulling all-nighters in college? Staying up drinking and partying with friends until the wee hours of the night? Getting by on 4 hours of sleep because you were too busy trying to cram work and leisure and social life into a single 24 hour day? Yeah, that all stops. Eventually you get to a point where you start getting tired early and can't really fight it off and you just wind up going to bed early because you don't really have the energy to stay up.

There is also the guy/girl equivalent which is for adults. Its going to be a guys/girls night out.

We should just say "Guys and Dolls", like in the good old days!

Or we can go back to calling them "Dames". And then we can talk about their gams or stems going all the way up, while solving noir mysteries.
