2nd of all, if it were tanking...which it is not... why now? COVID's been a thing for a year and a half, what the hell has changed to suddenly make it finally affect the markets? It affected them for literally a week in 2020, then Fed turned on the free money hose and stocks have been partying ever since, in spite of all the negative economic impacts on the "real economy". Because they realize they could get sued for misinforming the public and causing a ton of people to die.
Also possibly because they had someone in their family / friend circle die from it and now it's suddenly "real" to them.

Neither option in the poll is right, but 2 is closer to correct.

Trying to figure that out, lol

Does anyone understand how streaming works this time (in the U.S.)?
I don't give a shit about "Team USA", I just want to watch a ton of stuff from the sports I like, regardless of who's playing. Some of the stuff I like is so niche, like Badminton, that it's not even listed on PeacockTV.

In past Olympics, I could go on NBCOlympics.com and w/ an online login from a cable account, watch streams of pretty much every match. Some had foreign announcers, some had no commentary at all, I never really cared.
Looks like NBCOlympics still exists, but I don't know if it still requires a cable account login? I don't have that anymore... At least for now, it's letting me load videos of 2016 highlights w/o issue...

But now there's also Peacock? I signed up, but it looks like they're ONLY showing matches involving American athletes or that are for medals, so even the paid tiers are pretty worthless to me.

Just trying to figure out what I need to watch the raw online streams from events no one else gives a shit about, basically. Can't find an answer w/ google or reddit.

That's twice what the Switch has, natively, and it's doing just fine. Expanding memory as needed isn't particularly difficult.
1) Switch has physical games, so some or all of your library doesn't even need storage beyond save files and patches/updates.
2) Switch games are a lot smaller than PC games. Outside of Nintendo, games the last two gens have grown massive in size, it's just insane. Apparently it's due to texture maps for super-realistic looking stuff? But I also think developers just got lazy and stopped trying to compress the file size since storage on PC and consoles grew.

https://www.theatlantic.com/news/archive/2016/08/la-pieta-philippines-duterte/494330/

As Rodrigo Duterte campaigned for president he advocated a simple approach to fighting criminals: Kill them all, he said to both gasps and loud applause.
Shooting deaths before Duterte won the May 9 election averaged about two a week in the Philippines. Immediately after his victory, one person was killed by police or vigilantes every day. Around the time Duterte took the presidential oath of office on June 30, it had risen to three a day. By July 21, not even a full month into Dutertes term,it increased to 10 a day. In all, since Duterte assumed office, police or vigilantes have killed between 400 and 770 alleged criminals.

Those killed by the vigilantes are usually poor, some drug addicts, and some labeled drug dealers. The killers shoot from motorcycles, drop a cardboard sign with something like addict or drug pusher scribbled on it, then speed away. Killings like these went from being rare, to becoming daily occurrences, to reaching double digits every day.

The killings werent normal. All were tied to Dutertes call for the extermination of the countrys undesirablesthe addicts and criminals. He had promised to fill Manila Bay with their bodies. Within a week of Duterte officially taking office, the Inquirer was already writing about the killings in a fatigued tone: The killingsand the explanations given by the police to justify themcontinue to pile up. Officers killed two suspected drug dealers while they were handcuffed. Vigilantes killed a man who had mocked the new national police chief. They shot up a cemetery and killed five people, including a mother and her son celebrating a birthday, leaving behind one sign for all of them. They killed a teenager feeding his dog, who seemingly had no ties to drugs; and police shot and killed a suspected drug dealer because he tried to grab an officers gun. Journalists like Lerma, the photographer with the Inquirer, chronicled many of these killings. But until July 23, when Siaron, the sidecar driver, was killed, the deaths attracted little attention.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/oct/04/philippines-secret-death-squads-police-officer-teams-behind-killings

The officer claims he is part of one of 10 newly formed and highly secretive police special operations teams, each with 16 members.
He claims the teams are coordinated to execute a list of targets: suspected drug users, dealers and criminals.
The killings mostly take place at night, he says, with the officers hooded and dressed in all black. They set their watches, giving themselves one minute or two to extract target individuals from their houses and kill on the spot swift, precise, no witnesses.
He claims they then dump the bodies in the next town or under a bridge or they plaster masking tape around the head of the corpse and place a cardboard sign on the body that reads drug lord or pusher.
We put placards in order for the media, in order for those investigating [the] bodies to redirect their investigation, he explains, leading them to think: Why should I investigate this guy, he is a drug pusher, he is a rapist, never mind with that one, I will just investigate the others. Its a good thing for him that happened to him.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-philippines-drugs/retired-philippine-policeman-says-duterte-ordered-death-squad-hits-idUSKBN15Z0C8

More than 7,700 people have been killed in the latest crackdown, some 2,500 in what police say are shootouts during raids and sting operations.
Most of the rest are under investigation and activists believe many were extrajudicial killings.
Lascanas said death squad members in Davao got 20,000 to 100,000 pesos ($398 to $1,990) per hit, depending on the targets value. Some members, he said, were former Communist rebels.
He confessed to the unsolved murder of a Davao radio show host who was staunchly critical of Duterte.
Lascanas detailed his involvement in the bombing of a mosque and the killing of the family of a suspected kidnapper. The victims included a pregnant woman, a small boy and an elderly person.
Both attacks were ordered by Duterte, he said.
This is how it began, all the killings we did in Davao, whether we bury or we throw in the sea, we are being paid by Mayor Duterte, he said.

You tell me.
A cautionary tale for those who'd take the claims of a murderer at face value.

Yup. My first thought was the "cardboard justice" in the Phillipines that Duterte initiated. Where you can now kill somebody and put a cardboard sign on their corpse that they were a drug user, and you're in the clear.

That's a shitty assumption that amounts to taking a murderer at his word.
I felt the same regarding Zimmerman murdering Trayvon Martin, where the court basically took his account of events as fact due to a lack of anyone else to dispute them.
I never believe what the killer claims happened until evidence or other witnesses corroborate it.

Technically yes, it's all "social media". I would rather have a different term, though. I think there's significant differences between a message board and something like twitter, facebook, instagram. The former is generally self-contained. The latter is built intentionally so that anything posted can be (and is encouraged to be) shared around and "go viral". While message boards certainly have trolls and horrible nasty posts, I think the newer forms of social media are a much bigger breeding ground for that stuff.
While both types can easily lead to "living in an echo chamber", I think psychologically there's a difference, too. Like, you have to specifically go and seek out a forum. But w/ the newer social media, if you start posting or viewing certain content...even stuff that's not that extreme... you'll get suggested content of a "similar" vein that can quickly lead down a rabbit hole of extremism, plus you'll be bombarded w/ posts from all over validating it.
Like...if you go to Stormfront, you know deep down you're a bad person. But if you go on twitter and read a fairly neutral story about the border wall, then see some sensational post about the "crime being imported" that's too shocking to ignore...before long you're surrounded by alt-right content and you're still just on twitter. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2021/jul/13/alcohol-caused-740000-cancer-cases-globally-last-year-study

Alcohol is estimated to have caused more than 740,000 cancer cases around the world last year, and experts say more needs to be done to highlight the link.
There is strong evidence that alcohol consumption can cause various cancers including those of the breast, liver, colon, rectum, oropharynx, larynx and oesophagus. Research suggests that even low levels of drinking can increase the risk.
However, public awareness appears low: one UK survey, in 2018, found only one in 10 people were aware that alcohol could cause cancer.
Researchers say that needs to change. They revealed that in 2020 an estimated 741,300 cases of cancer, globally, were caused by alcohol. They suggested that alcohol labels should have cancer warnings, that there could be higher taxes on alcohol and that marketing of drinks could be reduced.
Harriet Rumgay, of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, in France, and a co-author of the study, said alcohol caused a substantial burden of cancer globally, and this was shown even at lower levels of drinking.
Alcohols impact on cancer is often unknown or overlooked, so we need increased public awareness of the link between alcohol and cancer, and policies to decrease overall alcohol consumption to prevent the burden of cancers and other diseases attributable to alcohol, Rumgay said.
Writing in The Lancet Oncology, the team describe how they made their calculations using existing alcohol consumption estimates for 2010, based on figures including tax and sales data, as well as other data such as risk estimates for cancers known to be linked to alcohol.
There is a delay between alcohol consumption and possible cancer development, so it is necessary to factor in a latency period between the year of alcohol exposure data and the year of cancer diagnosis, said Rumgay.
The researchers combined these figures with existing estimates of new cancer cases expected for 2020 based on records from previous years and hence not affected by disruptions due to the Covid pandemic to estimate the number of cases probably caused by drinking.
The results suggested alcohol consumption was behind an estimated 568,700 cancer cases in men and 172,600 cases in women in 2020, with the majority of the cancer cases involving cancers of the oesophagus, liver and breast. However, when looking at the causes of each cancer type separately, the proportion of cases deemed caused by alcohol was highest for cancers of the oesophagus, pharynx, and lip and oral cavity.
While most alcohol-caused cancer cases were linked to heavy or risky drinking, even moderate or low levels of alcohol consumption were estimated to have caused cases. The data indicated that drinking up to 10g of alcohol a day equivalent to a half pint or small glass of wine contributed somewhere between 35,400 and 145,800 cases globally in 2020.

The figures are likely to be underestimates, not least because they do not take into account former drinking and only include cancers where there is strong evidence of alcohol being the cause. Other complications include the risk estimates not being specific to particular populations.
Michelle Mitchell, Cancer Research UKs chief executive, said the research demonstrated that there was still lots of work to do to prevent alcohol-related cancers.
She said: Theres strong evidence that drinking alcohol can cause seven types of cancer, and the more someone drinks the greater their risk. Theres no safe level of drinking, but whatever your drinking habits cutting down can reduce your risk of cancer. Minimum unit pricing for alcohol, introduced in Scotland and Wales and shortly in Northern Ireland, would be a positive step for England and we urge the government to introduce it here.

I think "fat shaming" is grossly overblown, that being severely overweight is almost always a result of poor personal choices/discipline (some cases the person has a disability or something and it's not their fault), and that people that choose to be fat should feel ashamed and have social pressure to get in shape.

All that being said, shaming a fat person for exercising is incredibly fucking stupid and counter-productive, fuck whoever does that. Good for her, trying to get in shape!

At least that builds up their credit score and gives some cash back or other rewards.
I'm not a fan of debit cards, they're basically all negatives compared to credit cards and basically only exist for people unable to control their own spending. I'd rather actively monitor my kid's account than use a debit card for them.
And yeah, cash is the best, but eventually they'll need an account b/c you wouldn't want them hoarding actual bills.

In pretty much every minimum income/UBI experiment that's been conducted, it's been found that people do ultimately end up working, they just use the breathing room provided by the guaranteed subsistence income to pursue the training they need to get jobs they actually want (instead of spending all their time working terrible low-paying jobs that don't leave them with enough time or money to improve their skills), even if those jobs don't pay enough to live off of. That hasn't happened with the Covid unemployment boost, but that's also a temporary thing (and therefore not something to plan a career around), plus the nature of the pandemic has made changing jobs a pretty risky idea.
The problem is, there aren't enough "good jobs" for everyone, or even close to it.
No one seems to want to face that reality, but there simply aren't that many skilled jobs and/or jobs that are enjoyable/rewarding.
You can't just have everyone "learn to code" and things will be fine. Heck, I'm an engineer and I remember graduating into the recession and was told by people in IEEE that the unemployment rate for engineers was 8% (usually it was 1%), and struggling to get into a career. Even really high skill jobs or jobs that require advanced degrees can be overrun if there's a glut of applicants (the recession was the opposite, a lack of demand from companies, but it works the same either way if the supply of workers increases).

Ultimately, people like working. Having purpose, routine, and direction are generally good things for people's mental health and sense of self-worth. This is why so may retirees pick up jobs after being retired for a few years. What people don't like is working miserable jobs where they're routinely mistreated, purely because the alternative is starving on the streets (and even then, the pay only barely staves that off). Given a choice between that and being able to survive just as well (if not better) without working at all, it's only natural people would choose the latter.
As has been mentioned, you don't need a (paid) job to have purpose in your life. A lot of retired people also do volunteering, they can have hobbies, etc...
But yeah, if people don't NEED to work, they're not going to take the crappy jobs that nevertheless society needs. For some jobs like sanitation worker, they can pay an inflated salary to entice people, but that's not going to be a feasible model for stuff like groceries store cashiers or burger flippers at a fast food place, where they operate on thin margins. Eventually automation will kill most/all of those jobs, but until then we're in the awkward transition period. Which is why I say that we aren't ready for UBI today, but we should be setting things up for a smooth transition into it later on.
Heavily tax corporate profits at the point of sale, remove all corporate tax breaks and replace them w/ breaks for employing legal U.S. residents (and get rid of stuff like payroll taxes that punish companies for hiring people). Then as automation replaces jobs and corporate profits stay the same or even increase, the government becomes flush w/ money to pay for UBI so all the displaced workers aren't homeless and starving. The future is massive corporate profits off of an almost entirely AI "workforce", so we'd be smart to align our tax structure for that sooner than later.

Actually "love" their job to the point that "it doesn't even feel like work"?
Maybe 5%, tops.

The amount who don't hate their job and it's not too stressful, but they'd still rather have the free time than working said job if it was an option? Probably another 20%.

Working sucks, people do it b/c they have to. Republicans and feminists seem to think working is a privilege, that there's "dignity in work". But most of it is drudgery at best and physically taxing and soul crushing at worst that ends up shortening your lifespan by years.

Hopefully the unemployment boost proved that once and for all. People will gladly not work if it's an option, or even take a pay cut to not work instead of work, as long as it's enough to survive on.

Might be the first time I ever agreed with you on something. The answers in here are both baffling and eye opening. Bunch of nasty asses. Then again I live in a hot country and can't afford not to bathe my ass before I go out.
So you go to bed sweaty and gross?

Judge Idiot went super light on her sentencing, of course. P**** Privilege, as usual.

Voted average since like Zeus said, can't judge on just the face.

umm, that counts as rape ... there's too much of a power dynamic between a guard and an inmate
Only when it's a male in power and a female victim. It's not grape the other way around, the way the courts and society treat it.
Even merely defining grape beyond involving penetration is a struggle in a lot of western democracies.

That, and you know, people are with their partners because they like them. If they think there's a chance that things could still work out with the person they fell in love with, a lot of people will take it. You talk about "rationality," but -- overlooking that reason and emotion aren't always on speaking terms, which is why so bad relationships exist (and certain people get into bad relationship after bad relationship) -- wouldn't it be far more rational to try to salvage a relationship you wanted than to try to build something new with somebody else?
Sounds like the sunk cost fallacy.

Elaborate?
The way they're told to approach dating falls into the stereotype of "beta" behaviors...
Being a gentleman, paying for dates, taking it slow in general and waiting till marriage, etc...
We're talking about the stereotypes for "alpha" and "beta" here, I'm just pointing out that the religious right could just as easily as the "woke left" men be seen as betas.

That's kinda non-gendered, though, because women are also encouraged to save the marriage when the guy cheats. Granted, most people want to try to make a marriage work unless they're already at each others' throats.
Well yeah, but the topic was about men. And women usually aren't derisively called "beta", anyway.
And no, I think most rational people would end things if their partner cheated. Religious beliefs lead people to think divorce is wrong and to be avoided if at all possible.
And it was just one example. Pretty much every dating behavior a devoutly Christian guy would exhibit while pursuing a wife would be considered "beta".

I don't like making it a binary thing, it's more complicated than just you're in one camp or the other.

But I would say yes, they tend towards being "Beta" more.
But also to be fair, I'd say that on the far right end of the spectrum, the church basically indoctrinates guys to be betas, too. I've heard numerous stories where the dude was religious and tried to make it work w/ a spouse that cheated b/c his beliefs made him think he was obligated to try and "save" the marriage.

Yet another case of women getting ridiculously short sentencing compared to what a man would get.

White women are the most privileged group in Western society, and no matter how many times we see them basically get away with crimes with a slap on the wrist, the denial is so fucking strong that I'm already bracing the flame shields for all the personal attacks I'm gonna get just for stating the obvious.

14-17 year recommendation, got less than 1/4 of that!

Evening.
  • It's freaking cold in the morning in winter and in summer a shower to cool off from the afternoon heat is great
  • Go to bed clean instead of dirty from the past 24 hours
  • My wife gets a lot closer to me than my co-workers and I care about protecting her from my stench way more than them
  • During allergy season, it's a common suggestion to shower when you get home to wash the pollen off
  • I'm not a morning person, so no way in hell am I waking up earlier so I can shower
  • Related w/ the prior point, I do any exercising or walks after work, not at the ass crack of dawn, so showering after that makes the most sense

Yeah, still have a Garmin.
It doesn't have enough storage for map updates and I'm not sure nor really care if I can add a SD card or something. It's often telling me to drive off of a bridge or something b/c I guess a road used to be there or it's confused or something, and tons of places are just green emptiness on it that are fully developed now. It's amusing to me, lol. Like a time capsule.

I guess I could switch to a phone app, didn't have a smart phone till 2 years ago. But...eh...

CDC: Fully-vaccinated people don't have to wear masks anymore
*45% of Americans are fully vaccinated*
Everyone: Nobody has to wear masks anymore!
And prior to that, it was the unvaccinated that griped about and didn't want to wear the masks.
Literally a 12 year old could've predicted how that CDC announcement would pan out, and yet the CDC was caught in a shocked Pikachu pose.

They fucked up, royally. They should've known better after a YEAR of these scum bags proving so eager to ditch the masks. The second they said you can ditch the masks if vaccinated w/o requiring businesses to card check people, they were saying "free for all!" The honor system will never work, and these cretins have no honor.

That announcement was the CDC stabbing every responsible person in the back, and I will never forgive them for it.

I'd probably take the money, but can totally understand their position. The fact this was even allowed to happen (surround a residential home with skyscrapers) seems suspect and I'm sure their claims of debris falling are true.
I hope they have children to pass the house onto that will continue the fight, otherwise this does seem pretty pointless in the long run...
