I'd say it's a waste at any point, provided you're talking about actually trying to develop a relationship and not just casually hanging out with somebody that's also looking to just casually hang out. If you know for a fact that a relationship isn't going to go anywhere long-term, misleading your partner into believing that it is is always going to be a dick move.

Unless, of course, you're upfront about it and she says she's okay with that. Then you've done all you can be expected to, though bear in mind that she may be hoping you'll change your mind and you should therefore bring up the issue periodically as the relationship progresses to make sure you're on the same page.

Whether or not you can call him homophobic doesn't change the end result of his actions, nor does it change whether or not he should be held accountable for the result. It just changes whether or not you can call him homophobic.

Which does not make it any better to the people who're told by these candidates they're less than people who don't deserve rights.

It does, however, make it harder to convince the donor that they're doing something wrong. Especially so where he seems to have bought into the vague GOP fearmongering about the horrible things the Democrats would do if given power, such that he's explicitly said that things would be worse for LGBTQ people under Democratic rule (without citing examples or acknowledging that Dems have had power many times in recent history and not made things worse for LGBTQ people).

Basically, financially supporting lawmakers that make it illegal for trans people to use bathrooms safely is a personal contribution to making it illegal for trans people to use bathrooms safely. Even if he doesn't personally have anything against LGBTQ folks, supporting politicians who are actively working to restrict their rights means he is actively working to restrict their rights.

It really, really sucks that it's impossible to making campaign donations to facilitate something like reducing small business taxes without also facilitating the erosion of gay rights, but that's the current state of the GOP.

Now, saying that, doxxing and threatening him and his family over it is not okay, and that's happened. Disagree? Sure. Stop supporting him because you don't like where your money's going? Absolutely. But not violence.

It is a silly-sounding name, which does very little to inform people that haven't grown up with the term what the holiday actually is, but it's been celebrated locally under that name for long enough that changing it to appeal to a wider, non-local audience wouldn't be reasonable. We live in a world where almost all of us have a repository of all human knowledge in our pockets: Those that are confused can figure it out in a matter of seconds, eliminating any potential consequence that confusion might have had.

It's not hard, but it is something that does take actual practice to figure out, so without the opportunities or resources to learn (you do need access to either a pool or a reasonably tame body of water), it's understandable that people wouldn't know how. That then gets reinforced as an adult by not wanting to try learning (whether because of fear or embarrassment) and avoiding potential learning opportunities.

It is also just plain harder for some people. It's still doable, speaking as somebody with exercise-induced asthma that grew up with a very low body fat percentile who still manages to swim passably (treading water for extended periods is still out of the question, though), but somebody very much doesn't need a formal handicap to have more trouble swimming than you do.

The distinction is more of a North American thing. Someone basically saying "nope; what you say about yourself is invalid, because I say so" isn't even participating in a real debate. It's like someone trying to argue with someone else about what the other person's gender is. You don't get a say.

That's not remotely analogous. Gender is a psychological trait, comprised entirely of one's own experiences, thoughts, and feelings. There is no empirical, objective basis for defining it.

On the other hand, there is only an empirical, objective basis for defining somebody's ability to breathe. If they're getting enough oxygen, they are not having trouble breathing. Period. Discomfort while breathing is subjective, and is what you're talking about, but the question of whether or not air is making it into the lungs properly is one that only needs O2 saturation to determine (then you can get into stuff like spirometry to figure out the nature of a problem once you conclude that one does exist). Subjective assessments indicate nothing except the need to check.

I'm not saying you aren't experiencing discomfort while breathing with a mask. I am saying, however, that you're getting all of the oxygen that you would while wearing one that you would without it. That has been empirically determined. Unless you have reason to believe that your respiratory physiology differs from that of everyone else that has been empirically studied, there's no reason to expect that your results would differ if you were similarly examined.

To answer the actual question, by and large, political correctness just boils down to finding new ways to be nice/avoid being mean to people. Conceptually, that's a good thing. In practice, sometimes people can be too aggressive about it, getting upset at people that really can't have been expected to have considered those new ways for failing to adhere to them. It's also not uncommon to try to push forward with new ideas without considering how reasonable, practical, or beneficial they actually are (often without doing anything to consult the people it's supposed to be benefiting and falling into White Saviour territory).

On the flip side, though, that's very much not true of every such idea, and people raging against the mere concept of manners evolving are being extremely unreasonable. More often than not, "I hate PC culture" actually just means "I want to be able to act like an asshole without being treated like an asshole," and that's just not a sensible position at all. Like everything, moderation is key, but pretty much everyone does it wrong by glomping onto an extreme and yelling at the people glomping onto the other extreme.
