So I haven't read the rest of the topic cause nah but from my own looking into this and reading/understanding the story there's a couple things at play here and I feel its worth mentioning because I've been drinking and fuck it.

First - I think the perception people have by reading the headline is that CA Repubs are taking the ballots submitted in these boxes and just shredding them or something. That in and of itself is wildly illegal at the state and federal level. But it doesn't appear to actually be what they're trying to do understanding the surrounding circumstances.

Second - These fake ballot boxes are being placed in very conservative and rural areas - churches, gun stores, wherever the rednecks like to go. They certainly wouldn't be shredding those, right? The irony if this action is that they're actually encouraging people to vote - their own people. By CA state law - any vote submitted to one of those boxes, legal or illegal, MUST still be counted as a vote.

Thirdly - This doesn't strictly speaking appear to be against the law. The laws on the books for the state of California are actually pretty ambiguous because of CA's ballot harvesting laws. They appear to be following the legal guidelines for the physical structure of the box. I think what they're trying to legally say is that they're just designating someone to take those dropped ballots to an election official pursuant to CA's voting laws that allowed this back in 2016 which used to only allow relatives of a voter to deliver ballots. Similar to the above - a ballot is supposed to have the name/signature/whatever of the person who was designated to deliver the ballot(s) to the election official but doesn't need to have it for the votes to count.

The AG has ordered them to stop with the boxes but I suspect they're just going to fight the order until the election occurs.

Aside from the, I believe, misleading headline/inference - what's the problem with this? They appear to be encouraging more people to vote. I think the Dems should do the same thing in CA or whatever state they can get away with it in. There was that county in Texas that had the 1 dropbox or whatever - that whole issue could be resolved by these fake drop boxes if the state law allows those votes to count.

Shes a member of The Federalist Society and would be the 5th Supreme Court member that is part of that organization, theyre a conservative group with ideals that are not in line with the values of the majority of Americans, so why should they represent an overwhelming majority of the highest court in the country?

The purpose of the supreme court really isn't to be a representative of the people. If anything, they're supposed to be a 'representative' of the constitution. We have representatives of the people - they're called representatives.

Coincidentally the WHO came out with a new press release or whatever the fuck saying something to the affect of "Lockdowns should not be used as a primary method to control the virus - they do more harm than good". Which, in their defense, I think they said in the beginning as well but people have kinda forgot ever happened. I don't believe they ever advocated for long term closures of schools/businesses.

The gist of it is a few weeks in the beginning is fine to get control of things and to get you to a position where you can work around it, but that the long term affects of a lockdown are heinous to the population in terms of economic effect (particularly on the poor), increased death rates among other illness, depression, etc.

So while you may or may not have your facts correct - your country might have done the right thing. I suspect its going to be a very long time before we know what the most effective methods for control of the virus were globally. It's going to be a massive undertaking to collate the data and come to any sort of genuine conclusion.

I got tested last Monday for it because my nephew, a college student who lives in my house, got it and I wanted to be sure I wasn't putting anyone at risk.

Still haven't received my test results even though they said three days. Then they said five days. Now they said they don't know when I'll get my test results.

I just watched an 'Explained' video for the movie Oculus and it was literally just them going through the plot of the movie. There was no additional commentary, nothing that required any additional research, just nothing. And that channel has nearly 2 million subscribers. Fucking why?

I was watching it hoping there was some other lore or backstory or SOMETHING else.

That's a relatively new idea in American politics, and only became a reality in 2008 Heller decision, a nakedly partisan 5-4 ruling. Thinking it's always been that way is historical revisionist thinking.

Souter dissented on the decision and he was a Bush Senior republican pick. It wasn't an entirely partisan decision and in fact the decision, at least as it pertains to partisanship, was weighted toward anti-gun.

I'm not going to write an entire essay here, but you're missing a number of other supreme court decisions which positively or negatively affected the right to bear arms over the years. Mcdonald v. Chicago in 2010. Heller of course. US vs Cruikshank in 1875. Presser vs. Illinois in 1886. United States vs. Miller in 1939. Thats not to mention the however many cases that have gone to federal judges or state court judges that never made it to the supreme court (and there's a lot).

Many of the older cases regarded restricted the federal government from negating the second amendment and left the decision largely up to the states with the exception of the few recent cases which have been more unilateral in their decisions to support gun ownership against the will of the state.

Strictly speaking, the entire point of the 2nd was to make sure Militias (again, Militias with an "M", as in State Militias) couldn't be disarmed, specifically by the federal government. That's it. It was never intended to allow anyone a Constitutional right to a gun (in fact, it was strictly ruled NOT to do that all the way up until 2008), or anything else.

Reading between the lines, of course, this was meant as a check on the federal government, should the states ever feel the need to come to blows (as states had MUCH more power back then), or with each other (before the idea of uniting the states took hold, they basically acted as mini-countries). And even though the likes of Jefferson and others were fans of revolt should the need arise, it's like the 2nd is the specific mechanic meant to address that.

Really, it's why the 2nd is easily the worst aspect of the Bill of Rights: it's original intent is defunct, and has been grossly twisted into mean something it NEVER initially intended to. And we are all worse off for it.

Well its a good thing we have you to explain it for us. Why don't you go ahead and pass that on to the Supreme Court so they know they've been fucking up for the past two hundred years.

For a few different reasons but probably the most egregious of which was that she declared a state of emergency without state legislature involvement and continued not to involve them by requesting an extension to the preliminary 28 day emergency period (which is the law). It's in line with their supreme court decision.

Whether or not her decisions were legal or correct to begin with she, at the very least, needed the consent of the legislature to continue the state of emergency. She chose not to do that. One person making all the decisions is generally considered to be a bad thing.
