The police, when I reported the crime, told me that, in most cases, they don't find the bikes unless you see someone in the area riding a bike that looks like yours and inform on the rider, or scan sites where bikes can be sold such as Craigslist,etc. I was fortunate in that renters insurance covered part of the cost of one of the bikes but not the other.
