I must post and support any topic mentioning Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

It's a great musical comedy that parodies the "crazy ex-girlfriend" trope and gets surprisingly deep and emotional with real problems people face, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and even suicidal inclinations.

And somehow the show manages to portray all these things with kickass original songs that span just about every musical genre. The whole series (only 4 seasons) is available on Netflix.

Here is another great song that makes fun of things that women (and men) often do:

Ugh I stopped watching the show for this very reason. The drama was so contrived that it got irritating.

Heroes was another show that went this route, and one of the reasons the post season 1 episodes were so bad. So many issues came from stupid misunderstandings that could be solved immediately if people just listened.

TopicHow do schools deal with cheating now that students can look up any answers?
Zanzenburger
11/13/20 10:18:44 PM

There are multiple ways. Schools generally use one or more of these strategies:
- Webcam software that watches you take the test
- Locking software that prevents you from opening other tabs or browsers
- Each question is timed so you wouldn't have enough time to look up the answer anyways
- Problem solving questions that have you show your work; much harder to find answers
- Auto-generated problems that insert random numbers or variables, making it impossible to find the answer online
- Design the test to be open book from the beginning, so you are expected to look up the answer, but the questions are worded in such a way that you need to know what you are doing to even know where to look/what to look for.
- Avoid tests altogether and assign papers

I have done many of these as a professor except the first two.

THIS.

My home is in a neighborhood off a two-lane road at the top of a hill. I have to drive up the hill on that road to finally get home. The road has no sidewalks or a bike lane. Yet for some reason, cyclists love using this road. One, two, or sometimes even a group of cyclists take that road uphill, then slow down tremendously as they go up it for half a mile. Meanwhile, I'm in my car slowly pacing behind them. I can't pass them on the second oncoming lane, because the hill obstructs any potential oncoming traffic, so it's possible someone could suddenly pop in and hit me. So I'm basically driving 10 mph up that hill until I can finally pass the cyclists.

Absolutely. The idea of constant sex on a schedule sounded enticing at first. But once we started doing it, it became very clinical and took the fun out of it. We experimented with new positions and different areas of the house, and that helped for a while, but eventually we pretty much stuck to the same two positions for convenience's sake just so we could get it over with, the ones that would essentially end the process quicker.

Personally, I think it's pretty strong in it's predictions for President and House. I'm erring on the side of caution that we will flip the Senate, though. Some of those polls don't have me convinced.

I'm seeing Biden winning the presidency and the dems retaining the House, but will be just shy of taking the Senate.

Hopefully I'm wrong but that's my take on it.

Time only applies to things that are set in motion in a three-dimensional space. When something vibrates faster, it moves forward in time; when it vibrates slower, it moves "backward" or is delayed in time. Anything that exists on just the material plane is temporary; anything that exists on a higher, immaterial plane (like our souls) is eternal.

What you would consider the concept of eternity is actually just all points of space and time being interconnected. It will not feel like an eternity, because if you exist on a higher plane or dimension that is not governed by three-dimensional laws such as motion, matter and gravity, then there is no flow of time because there's no three-dimensional matter occupying a point in space.
I'll admit, this is fascinating stuff to learn. This is the kind of thing I'd read about in my leisure time if I had leisure time lol.

Statistics desperately need a boost in the public education spheres.
Agreed. I'm a statistics professor and for our class in the spring, I had the students follow the democratic primary polls. I had them, in groups, look at the polls and taught them how to evaluate them based on their methodology and interpret their results.

Then I had them guess who would win the primary based on their evaluations, and to see if it matched what the media was reporting. Surprisingly, some of them predicted a Biden win even when the polls were showing Bernie as the crowd favorite for a while there.

Statistics literacy is an important skill that most of the population does not have nor do they care to have.

This is something that has bothered me, too. If there is no afterlife, I'm afraid of dissolving into nothingness. But if there is an afterlife, I'm afraid of existing for eternity. Feels like a lose/lose situation here.

TC, I recommend you watch the TV show The Good Place with Kristen Bell and Ted Danson. It's an existential comedy about a group of people who die and go to "the good place". It's really hard to describe this show past that without spoiling it as they throw a twist at you every few episodes that affects the trajectory of the rest of the show.

But I'll say this. In addition to being a hilarious show, it tackles the afterlife in a way that makes you feel at peace about it. Despite the homages to heaven and hell, the show is not religious and doesn't really touch on that angle at all. It's more about confronting your greatest fears and learning to accept the unknown.

The show is only four seasons (with about 12 episodes per season) and is available on Netflix. It's a half-hour comedy so it shouldn't be too much of an investment.

yeah it is missing some context. If they were told beforehand to draw a pair of creepy underwear after reading a story that would change the story here. Hopefully the case
According to the article, they did read a book about a creepy haunted underwear. It was a female librarian who assigned it as a follow-up activity to the book.

My assumption is that it was likely an old lady librarian during story time having the kids do a silly activity and, being new to online education, was oblivious to how creepy the assignment sounds.

When I was a teaching assistant a while back, I recall a similar situation with a teacher and a kindergarten class, but it was in person. The kids read a story about a magical clothes drawer and the socks and underwear came alive at night to go on adventures. The kids were asked to draw a picture of the story in class.

I'm willing to believe this situation was likely less malicious and more ignorant. No guarantees, though.

TopicCan someone explain to me why this is different from 2016?
Zanzenburger
11/01/20 1:56:35 PM
#20
- National polls in 2016 were not actually far off; they accurately predicted the popular vote, which Hillary won
- It was the state and local polls that missed the mark, but even then, not by that much
- The problem was the media overhyped the national polls much more showing a decisive Hillary victory when the localized polls, especially in many swing states, showed a closer election, especially towards the last week

With that being said, here are some differences in 2020:
- Turnout is much bigger than 2016, one of the things that messed with 2016 predictions was the low voter turnout
- Less undecided voters this time around. In 2016 they unexpectedly voted majority trump, which polls didn't account for, so less chance of a surprise here
- Noneducated white voters were underpolled and underweighted in polls, so they surprised with high turnout. Since then, they have been weighted and accounted for
- COVID-19 by itself will likely change things up this time around with unpredictable results
- People are voting much earlier, making votes less volatile to "October surprises"
- Trump is no longer a wild card. He has a record to compare him to so people are coming in with a more concrete opinion of him, either loving or hating him

Those are some of the main reasons this time it is different.

care to share? it's something on my list, but i'm nervous to look. everything is so f***ing expensive it just makes me shut back down.

Without going too deep into the science of it all, there are hairs in a guy's head that are programmed to never die. Doctors aren't 100% sure why that is, but those hairs are the ones in the back of your head and the sides. It's why most/all men lose their hair at the top and front but not the back and sides.

Basically, they take those hairs (the ones that don't die) and put them in the parts of your head where the hair died. It's still the same durable hair, so it will never die. It will just keep regrowing over and over again. This is much harder to do if your balding has gotten to the point where you have more hair missing than hair remaining, but in many situations you can replace your missing hair with new, permanent hair.

Let me look and see if I can find any before-after pictures.

Depends on how much you are transplanting. For more full transplants, you will have a little bit of scarring where they removed the hair follicles for the transplant, but it's hardly noticeable unless you fully shaved your head. And you shouldn't see any trace in the new spot where the hair went.
