Surprisingly delightful show. The wife and I binged its two seasons this weekend (it's only 17 episodes).

The most interesting thing about this show is millennial nostalgia (late 90s/early 2000s stuff). Really makes you remember what it was like being in middle school around that time. It helps the show's creators (who also star in it) are my age, so I was in 7th grade when they were.

I don't relate to the girl-specific issues but my wife swears by them that's how middle school was like for her. But I did relate to many generational things, like the AIM episode where we watch them wait minutes to log into AOL and then spent the episode in random chatrooms. Those AIM sounds of the door opening and such brought back memories.

Anyone else seen it? Thoughts?

I wear them and don't even use the extra pockets. It just so happens cargo shorts are baggier, longer, and overall more comfortable than most other shorts out on the market. I'll either wear cargo shorts or basketball shorts when I'm not wearing long pants. Either way, they need to go past my knees. I've seen a weird trend where guys where shorts that are tight and go above the knee. Can't see myself wearing those.

  • Around half of early votes are mail-in ballots, which as we saw in the general election, heavily favored democrats
  • Largest early-voting age-group by far is 66+, which tend to more often lean republican
  • Voting percentages for Black population is higher than White population by a smidge, though obviously White population has highest voting number overall
  • Did Not Vote in 2020 General- 24,106
  • ^ This means over 20,000 people who did not vote in the general election are now voting for the runoffs. No way to know which way they lean.

The people who insist that they be called doctors are more likely to have received an honorary doctorate, a doctorate from a non-accredited diploma mill, or a low-ranked for-profit institution that meets the bare minimums for accreditation, usually because they feel like they have something to prove.

People with PhDs and such typically don't put so much emphasis on it. They'll mention it like they mention their name, but that's it. As far as I know, Jill Biden has not made any fuss about being called Dr. This guy just decided to create an issue where there was none due to an inferiority complex.

As a PhD holder myself, I tell my students in my statistics classes my full name, and that they can call me Dr. Lastname or call me by my first name. Doesn't matter to me. Still, 99% of students will refer to me by my Dr. title or simply "Professor" out of respect.

With that being said, I do know that many women and minorities do insist that they be acknowledged as Dr. simply because their education and expertise is constantly questioned and demeaned, so I think they are justified in that. This article just goes to prove exactly why this happens.

According to my doctor, most people don't go outside enough to get it naturally, unless you are a construction worker or outdoor laborer. Our first-world lifestyle keeps us from getting the amount of sun we need, and if we try to compensate directly with sun, we're more likely to get skin cancer before we get adequate levels of vitamin D, which is why supplements are pretty much needed.

Top 3 series finale for me.

Not only was it a great conclusion to every character (including many side characters I didn't think we would hear from again), but true to the show's theme, it introduced some interesting philosophical concepts about the afterlife and eternity that makes you think.

Honestly, I have always feared death, but I also feared eternity for the exact reasons the show mentioned. I have never seen a show address eternity the way this show did, and its solution actually made me feel at peace. This inspired many conversations with my wife after the show ended.

thanks for this reply. yeah i was confused on the two types, so that helps. who determines what you get? do you apply for a specific type or does a judge decide?
You choose which one you want. Each has their own requirements to qualify. You may qualify for one or both of them, but you can only choose one.

The Ch 7 is more stringent since it is straight up immediate loan forgiveness. You have to make under a certain amount to qualify. There are a few other small requirements too.

Some people opt for Ch 13 because they have assets that could be liquidated with a Ch 7. With a Ch 13 you get to keep all your assets through the program. Other people who make too much and don't qualify for Ch 7 usually qualifies for Ch 13.

Lastly, a huge benefit of Ch 13 is that your student loans are automatically deferred for the five years you are in the program. So if your student loan payments are killing you, then this allows you to focus on all your other debts while pushing back your student loan payments until those are the only loans you have left five years later. Just keep in mind interest continues to accrue on them. With a Ch 7, ones your loans are forgiven, you are back to paying your student loans within a few months.

One more difference is that a Ch 13 bankruptcy disappears from your credit report much quicker than a Ch 7.

I did many years ago. Hit a rough patch with some investments not panning out like they should have and some unexpected family medical expenses. I filed Chapter 13, which is essentially a reorganization where you pay back all your debts to one trustee for a period of five years as a percentage of your annual income. Then, whatever you owe after those five years is forgiven.

Most people are familiar with the Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which is the liquidation one. That one causes you to lose most fixed assets you won except for your house and primary vehicles in exchange for all your debt being erased after 3-6 months. But a Chapter 13 bankruptcy is basically consolidating all your secure debts into one manageable payment plan over five years, and then forgiving some (if not all) of your unsecured debts (i.e. credit cards, medical bills, personal loans). Keep in mind that student loans are not dischargeable in either of those scenarios.

Let me know if you want to know anything about either process.

My wife and I are watching rhe final season of The Good Place right now so that could be another as its been great so far.
I also grapple with The Good Place. I do think Seasons 1 and 4 are the strongest seasons, but it's hard for me to choose between them. I love season 1 simply because the whole show's concept was so novel, and the second half of season 4 as Eleanor was in growing danger of heading to the Bad Place really built up great dramatic tension.

But by Season 4, we knew the characters so well that the episodes hit home a lot harder. And those last two episodes were powerful, especially that series finale.

How much is it to get a private pilot's license? Is it really that expensive to rent a plane? I figure once I get my degree and start making a lot more money, saving for a few years, I'll be able to afford something. I really want to fly actually.
It ranges. I've seen places where you can get one for as cheap as $5k, but you're more than likely looking at $7k-10k. You need a minimum of 40 flight hours to qualify for the private pilot exam, but most people aren't ready for the test until they get closer to 80 hours. So how much it costs really depends how quickly you learn the basics. The sooner you qualify for the test, the less you will pay.

Though keep in mind the private pilot license is a very basic license that basically only allows you to fly during the day, during clear skies with only minor wind. To fly at night and through decent cloud cover, you need the instrument rating added on to the license, which adds another $10k in flight training. I never got that far to get my instrument, but may do so in the future.

Back when I would fly, renting a plane was around $100 an hour, which included the rental and gas costs. I imagine it's probably more expensive now as gas prices have gone up.

Show would improve dramatically if they never appeared again and Barbara was killed by Firefly or Cash or Solomon Grundy or something
Are you still in Season 1? If so, your first complaint will go in a direction you didn't expect, lol.

Unfortunately, the other two continue throughout the series. The only bright side is that later on, Bruce gets his own plotlines that don't drag down the main story too much.

It's so typical of modern journalism to go with clickbait titles that creates a misleading narrative. Even worse when that's the main argument people are using here as why this is bad.

From the article:
Content creator CptnAlex, who runs an Etsy store selling custom controllers, said he was sent a cease and desist from Nintendo covering all his products - and the Etikons were caught up in the mix.

According to this, Nintendo sent a cease and desist for all of this guy's products. The Etikons for the charity were just one of them that got caught in the massive list. Nintendo made no explicit mention of the Etikons, just provided a list of terms that were trademarked, and the Etikons happened to violate one of the terms on that list.

But the main narrative here is "Nintendo doesn't care about charities. Why is Nintendo targeting charities?"

My guess here is Nintendo likely didn't know or care that one of this guy's products was giving 30% of the sales to a charity. They likely saw this guy was selling a large range of products that used unauthorized Nintendo trademarks and put a stop to it, but the articles jumped on the one charity-product bit because that's the one that would get the most reactions.

I agree overall. From my understanding, I don't think the show ever tried to paint Gordon as a "good guy" in the traditional sense. The show often went out of the way to express that he was arrogant, prideful, shortsighted, and too focused on his work. His one strength was in his morality, and that he refused to allow himself to be corrupted by Gotham (though that gets tested several times throughout the show).

His incompetence in his job is often brought up by both allies and villains, and is sometimes frustrating that when he does win, it is usually either through pure dumb luck or because one villain sabotages another, giving him the easy win.

Overall, I think the show improves later on. It gets more campy, which I think works in Gordon's favor as it makes his faults more entertaining.

As a pilot, I would often use the older version to practice my steep turns as well as takeoff and landing. The simulator is surprisingly accurate when it comes to plane control. And this is the 2000 version. I haven't even tried the most recent one yet.

With that being said, there is definitely a learning curve if you've never actually seen an aircraft dashboard. No idea if there are any good tutorials as I already knew how to operate an aircraft when I first played this. I really need to pick up this game at some point.

Obligatory post in a Good Place topic.

Love the show. The humor is on point, the characters have great chemistry, and I love the philosophical lessons each episode teaches you.

But what I like most of all, is the condensed nature of the story. There is no filler. Plots that you think will take half a season to resolve get resolved in the next episode, only to lead into the next problem. Each time I think the writers have written themselves into a corner by resolving the main show's issues so quickly, they manage to creat a new arc that feels fresh and new. Admittedly, some arcs are so interesting I would have liked to see them spend a little more time with them (like their visit to the bad place), But overall the show was paced well.

It's only 4 seasons with 12 episodes per season and available on Netflix if you are interested.

What. Your citation goes at the end of what youre quoting or paraphrasing in MLA. If you cite at the end of the first sentence then talk for three more that suggests those three are your own commentary

edit: Should note that this is even more inaccurate for APA
It's kind of hard to describe my point without using specific examples. If I speak about the findings of a study for five sentences, and I wait until the fifth sentence to cite the study, the reader may be wondering for the first four sentences where all of this is coming from. Citing it in the first sentence, then continuing to discuss the same reference within the paragraph is fine, with the occasional nod to the original reference. Example:

Between cats and dogs, cats are considered to be the superior pet according to a recent study (Zanzenburger, 2020). The study had 100 cat owners and 100 dog owners answer a survey about their satisfaction. Cat owners consistently rated their satisfaction with their cat higher than dog owners with their dogs. The results were significant with a p value less than 0.01.

This is what it would look like if I put the citation at the end.

Between cats and dogs, cats are considered to be the superior pet according to a recent study. The study had 100 cat owners and 100 dog owners answer a survey about their satisfaction. Cat owners consistently rated their satisfaction with their cat higher than dog owners with their dogs. The results were significant with a p value less than 0.01 (Zanzenburger, 2020).

That just seems too long to get to the author of the actual study. But COVxy is right in that people do it differently. I have seen people cite it both at the beginning and at the end. My dissertation advisor taught me to put it at the beginning and I have done it that way ever since. People tend to understand I am still talking about the same reference in my wording.

@Zanzenburger So if it's not one sentence but several sentences, the citation should go at the end of that block? Is it OK to start with a citation like "According to a 2018 study, x, y and z"?

50 more words. I can't focus. vision... fading.
It's subjective, but I would rather a student start with the citation than end it.

For example, if you have four sentences describing a citation, reference it in sentence 1 instead of sentence 4. Just keep it all in the same paragraph so the professor knows it is all related. If you need to start a new paragraph for the same citation, cite it again. Better to be safe than sorry.

As far as whether to put it at the beginning or end of sentence 1, either is fine as long as you vary it. For example, your posted example is okay unless you do that with every citation. Then it is just sloppy writing. It is okay to do it once in a while but most of the time just put it in parentheses at the emd of the sentence.

this doesn't do much for the nerves >_>
This is wildly misinformed. The score you get is not necessarily the score the professor will see. There are toggles that automatically remove your references list and direct quotes from the calculation. As a student, you have the ability to do it too if you know how to do it. I am a professor and do this all the time.

Also, shorter papers have bigger scores because it doesn't take much to get a high percentage with such few words.

You will be fine. Just read through your paper. If you make a claim that is not common knowledge, just make sure there is a citation at the end of the sentence. If it is an idea you developed throughout the paper, you don't need a citation.

Basically, every statement should have a source. Either the source is a citation, it is your own analysis in the paper, or it is something a regular person would realistically know.

These topics always interest me because I like seeing how different people define poor. More interesting is how one's perspective changes as they get older. Just in this topic there are numerous people who thought they were poor but realize now they were better off than they thought. I imagine it's usually as you get exposed to true poverty, you start to realize how fortunate you actually were. Nothing wrong with it, of course, just a part of life where we continue to learn. Perspective is a wonderful thing.
