Yeah don't take normal cabs, Uber is cheaper and better. The bus is alright for the price but stops way too much and I'm not patient enough for it. I've never tried the monorail.

The casinos dont let Uber drive up and make you walk to the curb. The taxi unions did it on purpose.

Bellagio has my favorite restaurant ever, Le Cirque.

https://la.eater.com/2020/7/14/21324905/foie-gras-ban-california-lifted-not-illegal-ruling

Foie gras, the fattened liver of duck or goose, is no longer illegal to serve in California, as long as the product is comes from an out-of-state seller and is transported by a third party, according to a ruling from a federal judge today, reports the Associated Press.

The luxurious delicacy has had a lengthy history in California, where it was first banned in 2004 at the urging of animal rights activists. In 2015, U.S. District Judge Stephen V. Wilson determined that the state law clashed with the federal governments Poultry Products Inspection Act, ruling in the favor of the plaintiffs, which included Hermosa Beach restaurant Hots Kitchen (which is now closed), and multiple foie gras producers.

Foie gras could then be sold and eaten in California, but not produced in the state. Menus across Los Angeles and the state of California served foie gras, an expensive add-on or ingredient that often appeared in upscale restaurants. However, in 2017, Ninth Circuit judges rejected the the lower courts ruling and said the state had a right to ban the food based on animal cruelty. In 2019, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the case, which meant the foie gras ban was indeed upheld and enforced for the past 18 months in California.

On July 14, 2020 U.S. District Judge Stephen V. Wilson, who originally ruled in favor of foie gras producers and a local LA restaurant in 2015, again determined that foie gras could be sold in California: There is no principled way to distinguish between foie gras produced out of state and transported into California by the purchaser and that which is delivered by a third party, wrote Wilson.

The ruling is a major win for out-of-state foie gras producers, who said they had lost nearly a third of sales due to Californias foie gras ban. Meanwhile, the current coronavirus pandemic has led to closed dining rooms, and only limited takeout and delivery service for restaurants. The situation has resulted in numerous permanent restaurant shutters across Los Angeles (and the state). But hey, chefs can start serving foie gras again (does it keep well in takeout containers?), as long as it comes from outside of California and arrives through a third party.

Should be good news for the small farms that produce foie gras at least.

Ready Player Two, novelist Ernest Clines sequel to his bestselling Ready Player One, will be published by Penguin Random House imprint Ballantine Books on Nov. 24 in North America, the publishing house announced today.

The book can be pre-ordered beginning today. International publication dates will be announced in coming months, and are expected to exceed the 58 countries and 37 languages in which the original was published.

Cline adapted his debut novel into the Warner Bros. Steven Spielberg-directed film Ready Player One. The 2018 movie took in more than $582 million worldwide.

I guess I'm on board, I enjoyed the first book, although all the 80's references got annoying.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/29/world/asia/india-new-delhi-locusts.html

NEW DELHI A miles-long cloud of locusts swarmed Indias capital region over the weekend, flying through metro stations and playgrounds, invading sugar cane fields and threatening major losses to the agriculture sector at a time when coronavirus restrictions have already caused the loss of millions of jobs.

Indian officials have struggled for weeks to contain the countrys worst locust invasion in decades, as the insects have moved from western regions to the New Delhi area and farther east to Nepal despite efforts to douse crops with pesticides and kill swarms using drones. More than a half-dozen Indian states have been affected.

In a year punctuated by cyclones, heat waves, surging coronavirus infections and overwhelmed hospitals, scientists warn that the locusts could push agrarian parts of India to the brink of disaster, severely disrupting food supplies and slashing earnings for millions of struggling farmers.

Hari Chand Sharma, a prominent Indian entomologist and agriculture scientist, said the number of locusts in the country could top a trillion if the spread were not checked. He blamed foreign nations for not doing more to stop the insects from traversing large parts of Africa, Asia and the Middle East this year.

https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2020/06/14/876002404/locusts-are-a-plague-of-biblical-scope-in-2020-why-and-what-are-they-exactly

Titanic swarms of desert locusts resembling dark storm clouds are descending ravenously on the Horn of Africa. They're roving through croplands and flattening farms in a devastating salvo experts are calling an unprecedented threat to food security. On the ground, subsistence planters can do nothing but watch staring up with horror and at their fields in dismay.

Locusts have been around since at least the time of the pharaohs of ancient Egypt, 3200 B.C., despoiling some of the world's weakest regions, multiplying to billions and then vanishing, in irregular booms and busts.
If the 2020 version of these marauders stays steady on its warpath, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization says desert locusts can pose a threat to the livelihoods of 10% of the world's population.

The peril may already be underway: Early June projections by the FAO are forecasting a second generation of spring-bred locusts in Eastern Africa, giving rise to new, powerful swarms of locust babies capable of wreaking havoc until mid-July or beyond.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-53221211

Brazil and Argentina are monitoring the movements of a large swarm of locusts, which has been eating its way through crops in the region.

The insects, which can cover a distance of 150km (93 miles) in a day, have already travelled from Paraguay to Argentina and it is feared Brazil and Uruguay could be next.

Brazil has told farmers to be alert to the possible arrival of the locusts.

Kenya and India are also currently fighting locusts swarms.

Where did the swarm come from?

The swarm originated in Paraguay and crossed into Argentina on 21 May.

Granted, when I see people rant about IPAs they tend to focus entirely on the dank bombs which is more typical in West coast style. The new trend (at least on the East Coast) is New England hazy styles, which tend to be bombastically tropical and juicy as opposed to bong water.

It's true, all of the local microbrew IPAs I tried in San Diego tasted like bong water. At least they have high alcohol content.
