TL;DR - Having more money doesn't make you happier, but spending more money does?

Pretty much, if possible studies should use spending instead of income when reporting wellbeing in wealth studies. And spending on holidays, food, and housing are the highest ROI in terms of life satisfaction, spending on hobbies less correlated with life-satisfaction.

Abstract: Does happiness depend on what one earns or what one spends? Income is typically found to have small beneficial effects on well-being. However, economic theory suggests that well-being is conferred not by income but by consumption (i.e., spending on goods and services), and a persons level of consumption may differ greatly from their level of income due to saving behavior and taxation. Moreover, research within consumer psychology has established relationships between peoples spending in specific categories and their well-being. Here we show for the first time using panel data that changes in life satisfaction are associated with changes in consumption, not changes in income. We also find some evidence that increased conspicuous consumption is more strongly associated with improved well-being than is increased nonconspicuous consumption.

Medical physics. Its one of the two ABMS certified specialties that dont require med school. Its alright, once you get past the high amount of politics involved and the abysmal match rate. Its pretty risky just based on how competitive it is (about 50% match rate, lower for MS higher for PhD) and most people not getting a residency dont have good/any backup options. Its a good life, but Id probably recommend someone be an actual physician over picking this due to having more autonomy and more part-time options available to them. It was nice getting paid to get my degree tho

Looks like the VA job pays 197k and I never work more than 40h a week by contract. As good as the hours sound, I think Id feel less free than I feel now due to the small amount of vacation days. Non-negotiable because the contracts been bought or something...dont think I want it. Now I need to decide to keep my job or change to a different position Ive been offered...and then be done with looking at jobs and alternate careers because it exhausts me.

So the university job where I can get my PhD offered me 5k more to get me to 130k and then also say I get a 401a which I need to look into but I think that's an extra 12k...and honestly I know I 100% have the connections to get a professorship (as ridiculous of a statement that may seem). And I know it's silly, but I have access to amazing free lunch and get my 1 hour lunch break daily sounds great.

Hopefully interviewing with VA tomorrow (I asked them to schedule the phone interview for tomorrow), I'm going to tell them I'm on a short timeline and need to come out for on-sites next week or maybe even later this week if I'm doing one.

Compared to the position I'm talking to right now back at my residency, ~125k base (hopefully more but probably not) with 27-33 days vacation + 11 more holiday while doing PhD and very likely raise to about ~160k afterwards.

Like the time off is a big deal to me and 10 vacation + 7 holiday isn't a lot compared to 28 or 38 days. But, the pay is enough to compensate for that really, just have to basically say I'm not doing actual traveling unless I can convince friends or family to come also.

Values here are base salary: 50k was residency which I got out of last july. 140k was where I am now (~80th percentile) but they gave me a raise after about six months to 152k putting me ~90th percentile. 80th percentile with ~10-15 years experience is 210k and 210k is median with 15-20 years experience.

Total comp for this VA job I'm estimating around ~210-230k base + ~20k from bonuses and 401k matching...I'm not well experienced with hourly. They seem to want 45h a week but also you're on call 24/7 and are limited to 100h annual overtime which doesn't add up unless overtime doesn't start after 40h, but whatever everything is ballpark and about 50% higher than I'm getting now.

I'll get it all sorted out during the interview.

It'll be more boring than my current job and instead of being at basically a top center I'll be at VA clinic...only 10 days vacation a year is kind crappy to my current 20-25 days and will basically prevent me from doing any sort of travel other than to see family...but otherwise the compensation there looks sweet and I can piggyback vacations onto holidays probably.

Same with tv/movie/book streaming.

Having access to a never ending pool of high quality options makes me value things less in general.

I listen to a larger number of albums than I ever have, but I cant name them or remember them well months later. Might find one that stands out for a month, to forget its name in a few months. Almost any song I play often was found before I had access to streaming or from a band I already liked.
