I used to have an original xbox but I think I sold it. ordered one from ebay yesterday. I found out that many xbox games are pretty cheap. so it might be one of the easier consoles to try to collect

Even the dead ones? Counter Strike is pointless, and so is Phantasy Star Online unless your hard drive has a file that required you to take the game online, impossible at this point.

part of it might just be my autism or OCD taking over. I don't know. I just like the idea. compared to other consoles, xbox games are not that expensive. so it's kinda doable..

If itll make you happy then go for it, just take a bit to consider the time/money/effort itll take before you start buying a bunch of titles that you might never play

Steel Battalion was so much fun. The controller was great. It would have been nice if there had been more games to use that controller though.

the only things I know about Steel Battalion are

1. it uses a unique controller that has like a million buttons
2. when your mech is damanged beyond repair you have to hit a button to eject your character from the mech before it explodes and if you don't get out in time you get a game over and YOUR SAVE FILE IS DELETED

You had plenty of time to hit the eject button once the critical damage sequence started. I never died and lost my save file.

The controller was the best part. Sure, it looks a little daunting with 40 buttons. But they all served a purpose and it's not like you were constantly using all of them. I got the hang of the controller pretty quickly.

Some. It isn't impossible to play Phantasy Star Online though, it runs fine offline if the system went online already, but if your hard drive doesn't have the file, you would need to get an XBox memory card with it ready to transfer. I've wanted to grab the game myself since it was the only copy I ever found here (Cube games are sodding rare in NZ, imported most of mine) but the rings I need to go through to make it run, I just skipped it. Wasn't sure I'd have any luck down here.

anyway the console came today but I can't hook it up to my tv until an HDMI adapter comes which amazon says won't get here til june 9th

but at least I have the xbox now

Could be worse. A friend of mine decided about 20 years ago that he was going to track down one of every console ever made, back to the 1970s/Gen 1, and as many games for each of them as he could possibly find (including odd foreign/import games, as long as they would play on a basic console). He refinished his basement so he could set up multiple TVs, with different input types, so he could effectively set up any one of the consoles whenever he wanted. Basically turned the whole thing into a gaming shrine.

He also had a Virtual Boy.

He was nowhere near having every game ever for any console (let alone every console), but he's sunk a LOT of money into that collection. He kind of tapered off after his second and third kid were born (twins), but he recently started up again (because like everyone else, he's stuck at home with too much free time at the moment).

What really made his plans utterly insane is that he wasn't just buying the games, he was trying to beat them all - or at least outsource beating them to other people. Whenever someone beat a game, he'd take a picture of the end screen and post it on his MySpace page (later shifted to a Facebook page, and at this point I have no idea where he's hosting the pics these days).

At least once, he held a party and had people over solely so that they could all kind of collaborate to beat some older NES games that he was having trouble with on his own. While having games on the other TVs as well so people could play other things (I was running a Jeopardy tournament on one of them, there was a fair bit of Halo going on at one point, etc). I think that might be the night I got really drunk and beat Zelda II for him, though it might actually be the night I got really drunk and beat Maniac Mansion instead.

I actually was thinking about this the other day. that if I was rich enough, I'd buy a mansion and convert it into a gaming shrine. and just fill the house with every console and game. I'd get a copy of every gaming thing I could get my hands on. every system, every game ever made for that system. every controller and accessory and everything that ever existed. but alas, I am not rich and can't buy houses

lol rich enough OG Xbox is so dirt cheap any poor kid could collect for it. If you need a way to spend your millions go collect SNES.

Get a house with like two dozen spare rooms. Put one TV/monitor and one console in each room. Then decorate the room with tchotchkes and souvenirs from that console's IP (so lots of Mario and Link stuff in the Nintendo rooms, Halo/Master Chief stuff in the Xbox rooms, Pac-Man and ET ironically in the Atari 2600 room). Each room essentially becomes a shrine to that console, with the centerpiece being the ability to play games on that console.

Once you've got the whole thing set-up, you could always charge admission and invite people in like it was an overall video game museum.
