Also the OWA remake at the end was pretty great, especially with the MGR style music synchronization, but the lowkey best remakes are all the JENOVA themes. They turned all that cheesy synth into something really elegant.

As a Platinum fan I liked it a lot but never loved it. Gameplay-wise it's awesome seeing how they stuffed literally every mechanic from all their games into one cohesive package, plus more, all with super refined controls. But the overall structure of the game itself is very bland. If you don't like Platinum then you can easily skip it, and even if you do might skip it too.

It would benefit a ton from a sequel though.

I played through Crisis Core and have the typical FF7 osmosis, but I really don't know any details beyond that. Like I had no idea that Cloud literally walked from the Crisis Core ending into Midgar, Tifa found him, and then FF7 starts. I thought he spent a while actually being a merc in the city.

Anyway thinking about it more, this game totally followed the Star Wars sequel approach. Episode 7 was essentially a remake of Episode 4, with some really cool extra scenes, and a bunch of confusing filler that was clearly there just to give Episode 8/9's writer stuff to work with. Things like Roche and the Whispers are like the Knights of Ren and Rey's parentage - just random literary ammo that they can choose to expand on in the next parts, or just totally abandon. It also feels like they will base the direction of the next part off of public reactions like Star Wars. I hope they can execute it a lot better though, focusing on the good stuff. More Wall Market type stuff...

Also - I think the concept of the ending is really good. Sephiroth being on a meta level and not bound by the events of FF7 makes him way scarier.

But the execution definitely sucked. It was completely Kingdom Hearts with no regard for the universe that they are in. Even if it's all an illusion or mental or whatever, it still just doesn't fit. It could've been more subdued like Xenoblade's ending and still worked narratively. It's a shame considering how meticulously refined the rest of the game was. It doesn't help that the gameplay took a nosedive towards the end too.

Even if you like the direction they're going in, you can't help but wish you had more of the early sections of the game which stuck closer to the original. They were just plain better.

Finally finished. This is how I understand things.

The whispers are an in-game manifestation of plot armor based on what happened in FF7. Sephiroth can cut through the plot armor and change the timeline. The party went to a different timeline in the end, where apparently Zack survived.

There's 2 ways I think this can go. 1) This means that part 2 is free and can go in a totally different direction if it wants. 2) Everything in the last chapter was just some batshit nonsense to give us something to talk about for the next couple years, but the next part will still be 90% as the original, but with some alternate scenes thrown in, just like this one.

I think it's gonna be option 2 honestly. Nomura's speciality is the in-between-games nonsense speculation, and beyond that, what is the benefit of changing things too much? This just covers their ass in case they want to change or cut large parts of the next parts. I can imagine after the game goes open world, there's a lot of stuff that will be totally boring if taken from the original.

The weirdest thing is keeping Zack alive. What even is the point of that? Doesn't really affect the story...

Side note I really thought they were gonna let us play the Zack scene here. That would've been GOAT for sure, but I guess it only has impact when he dies.

Hell yeah. There's no sequence I rewatch as much as the support pillar boss fight, sequence leading up to it and afterwards.

With the song that gets used too, it's just so perfect. The stakes feel so real (even if we know how it'll end)!!

I'm near the end of the game and there's another huge blurry background texture. I'm actually wondering if those are on purpose to evoke the prerendered style of the original. It looks VERY similar to the old renders. You can render much better skyboxes nowadays so it seems intentional.

I still don't think it looks particularly good but I understand it. Those sections might have been done earlier in development and then they didn't have time to change it.

Was thinking about how much the dry scenes in FF6 could be improved with the remake treatment. They probably won't ever do it, but the story and events in that game would definitely hold up I think.

X would be my second choice even though it aged well, since I think they could add so much stuff to the game and make it even better. Plus imagine the combat using the new ATB system... damn

Later battles only get harder tbh. I haven't struggled for RPG bosses like this in a looooong time (although most don't require more than 1 try). Each boss and even miniboss feels like a serious puzzley battle like I haven't seen since FFX. Maybe a handful of Xenoblade bosses did it too. But this is every, single, one. I can see it getting tiring, but it's definitely a really good thing.

The only frustrating part to me is disables like sleep/stun/bound. There's usually ways to avoid it though, sometimes not. Everything else has various strategies to deal with things. It's just really different from other ARPG systems so the learning curve is steep.

He was on the way to the waterbending master but he was looking for all 3 masters since he had no time. Remember Haru was also early in S1. The point is that ideally he would have found earth and fire masters on the way to the north pole, then train with all and be done with it. But they had to show why it couldn't be that easy.

That's pretty illogical. I think that's the whole point of the episode so early on. I remember when I first watched it I was pretty dumbfounded as to how he would ever learn firebending after that. It made finally going into the fire nation in S3 a lot more exciting, and even moreso for Zuko becoming the teacher.

It wouldn't make sense to just randomly never ran into an exiled firebender over their whole journey, despite explicitly looking for one and also being the Avatar with all the benefits that gives.

I got rid of Chakra immediately cuz it's just 25% of missing health so it gets exponentially weaker, and also only works on herself. She does generate a ton of ATB, but that can be used on Cure and other spells since she does have a big chunk of MP as well (or better yet, summon abilities during bosses which are 0 MP). Basically if you notice any imbalance in MP among your party, give them Cure and make them the heal slave so you have more space for offensive magic. Barrier too since that saves a lot of Cure MP long term.
