Use one of the spoiler topics for ending discussion

But yeah MP is pretty strange so far. Ethers give 20 but a medium spell is 11+ on its own, so it's only giving you 1.5 more attacks. Can't rely on them. The key I've found is that nothing is ONLY weak to magic. Magic is used for staggering or pressuring, after which they can be physically damaged. This means that often you do want to use the weaker magic which only takes 4MP, plus ONLY cast attack magic inside Arcane Ward to get the double cast. It also means your physical attackers need to use magic to cause stagger (and heal) too, not just Aerith spam.

I haven't really had major MP issues playing that way, using 1 ether per boss at most. I've gotten near 0 in some bosses due to Cura and Barrier usage, but not due to attacking.

Not sure if anyone in this topic is a newcomer to the game, but would it be obvious they padded the game out or does it actually feel cohesive?
As a newcomer it's still obviously padded. If not only because there are entire sections you can choose to skip if you don't want to do the side missions. It's all very engaging though, not at all typical RPG padding. The extra mainline story bits though... not totally sure what was there originally or not tbh, it all seems important and cohesive (with a few exceptions).

But god damn do these boss battles make you WORK. Even when you're not really close to losing, it feels like such a struggle to win. FF was always good at that I suppose.

The only reason contests still happen is because @SBAllen occasionally gets blasted AF on cocaine and randomly decides to set up the whole thing. The next day sees what he did and is like "welp... might as well make a topic on B8 announcing it". These benders have become less frequent over the years, and so have the contests.

The rate that teammates generate ATB gauge is also pretty crappy. It's so slow compared to the character you play as.
I've started to understand the combat a lot more after this. At first I thought it was like Xenoblade where you have a lead + 2 AI characters, and it matters who is lead because you can optimize your attacks and such, but in general there are 3 characters fighting at once. Maybe 50% lead, 25% each AI.

But it's really different here. The 3 characters are more like options available to the player, and the AI isn't really meant to do much other than survive. The proportion is more like 80/10/10. So the moment-to-moment choice ends up being a tension between whose ATB you want to charge up, and who you want to be doing damage. Sometimes that's the same character, so it feels more like Kingdom Hearts mashing, but usually for bosses it's different characters, so it gets way more tactical and complex.

There was one time I was dumbfounded by the lack of graphical detail but otherwise haven't noticed it too much. They make Aerith's house look so pretty and then inexplicably when they show you close up to the flowers, the flowers are really bad graphics. Like how could they not make the flowers look nice? Or if they were going to do that, then why zoom you in close to them where the bad graphics are super noticeable.
This has been a common thing throughout the game. Bad textures on really important objects that take up a lot of screen space. There must have been some weird bug or other development issue that caused it because they definitely knew about it and still shipped. Maybe they'll fix it later.

I never knew the details of the story and it all seems super straightforward to me already. It could definitely go way faster without being confusing.

But in general the pacing and the way they incorporated side quests is really genius. The game still has the original linear structure to drive it, but they can insert side missions in between the story beats. It's probably the best solution to padding the story's length possible. If they tried to add global side missions like in XV, it wouldn't work at all with the story, and so these limited, intimate side missions are the only option. And it makes for much more interesting missions full of narrative context, and really good accessibility things like "are you sure you want to leave without finishing the side stuff?" to eliminate missables anxiety. It's absolutely the solution to the "series of corridors" (which is actually a great way to structure an RPG) and I really hope more RPGs do it now instead of ruining their whole pacing with open world design.

The only time I really tried FF7 before was on an emulator many years ago. I think I got to the market before quitting, but it felt really dry and unmemorable. All the streets looked exactly the same, all the same night time scene. This feels way more alive and charming, day and night scenes, unique NPCs. Some of the environments don't have too much graphical detail but it's still an improvement over the original renders. Animations and voices are all awesome. Things like reactor 8 having a green color grading and 5 a blue one. Pretty basic but it made them feel really different. Can't really imagine where it feels lifeless, unless you're comparing to your childhood imagination/nostalgia.

Controls are kinda clunky but they work really well in practice and feel rewarding. I'll take that any day over the hyper polished MGSV and BOTW style controls that have smoothed out all the dimensions and play. This one feels like there's a difficulty curve and some mastery involved, which feels really nice. Worst things are non-combat controls like the huge turning radius, or the janky triangle interactions.

Dark Souls has a lot of lore packed into the game but its actual story telling is a piece of garbage.
Regardless of all the RPG arguments ITT, this part is just totally absurd. The story in DS1 is awesome, and yes it is delivered through an unconventional more environmental narrative, but by the time you get to the Gwyn fight everyone understands the importance of what is happening in this world. It's honestly a pretty typical RPG story, just with a genius and risky presentation. If you think it's just bashing skeletons you missed out on the whole game.

The thing with Celeste post game is you really don't need to do it. There's plenty of content in the main game and you can leave it at that. The tapes, Core, etc are all very clearly narrative-less platformer challenges.

I think it's a huge plus to the game really. Lots of intimate indie games have a super polished core experience with an interesting narrative and such, but that's it. If you really love the gameplay, there's nothing more that you can spend time with. It keeps the game pure and sublime, so it makes sense. But there's something great about lifting the veil and realizing that the players might just want more gameplay. It's not the best or most accessible stuff ever, but a lot of people will really enjoy pushing the limits. I'm glad Celeste did that even if it's not really for me. Hat In Time does it also.

I am a mega huge fan of Rayman, and I do think Legends was better than Origins (for reasons I forgot cuz it's been a while). But I would definitely put Celeste in that same tier.

They are completely different games ones you get to the post-game (Celeste is more super precise levels, Rayman is more about optimizing relatively easy routes in the daily challenge). But for the main game I would say equally good level design. You can't ignore Celeste's narrative though. It takes the game to another level for a lot of people.

It's extremely good in every way. I think it starts to break down at the much higher difficulties, because they started relying more on super specific precision (IWBTG). But the DLC chapter that came out is both super difficult AND super fun.

If you don't like Super Meat Boy and such then you probably still won't like it though.

banananor posted...
It's pretty good, but the gameplay leaves little room for creativity once you're past the introductory areas

there's one specific sequence of button presses that will get you past each challenge, and it's a matter of how well you can execute the timings
This is really wrong, but it's true that it makes you feel like the moves you made were the obvious only one. Check out speedrunners and such to see all the variety.
