Also, the only reason the "koopas" explode is because they couldn't figure out the ricochet physics at the time. Similar to with why you have the Super Ball instead of the Fire Flower.

The super ball was fun. It added a new wrinkle and they designed levels to give it practical uses.

They were supposedly bizarro to make them different from the "real" series, and because those systems couldnt handle the real games, but oddly, they both got the real SMB1 and DKC later on anyway.

I think they made the right decision. If you just had one koopa on the screen at a time, it would feel like the discount version of Super Mario Bros. But you have a bunch of new enemies and there's no standard for comparison.

The vehicles were a nice touch. It's odd to have a Mario game which ends in a shoot 'em up level, but it works to flesh the game out and make it feel like it's giving you more than it really is.
