I'm a screenwriter-in-progress. While I know that producers get the final say in who looks like what, I hope to get to a point where I can have some attractive females in my stories and not shy away from it. Never mind that women are strong individuals with their own motives and personalities. Once you have one that looks like a 16 year old boy's fantasy, that's it. They're out to get you.

I just mentioned one company that isn't super big: Zorro Productions. I believe Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer's owner is called Rudolph Productions. (Yes, he's copyrighted too.) Sometimes, the little guy survives by licensing out his or her property. I think Tarzan is on that list too. All but one of his novels are public domain, but he still has a copyright and that's why you don't see him very often.

I don't want to see these companies told that their attempts at loopholes are no good while the big companies's are.

Mickey Mouse's first cartoon has fallen into public domain. He's still owned by Disney and will be for all time. Courts ruled two years ago that Zorro was a public domain character based off of his novel falling into public domain. Zorro Productions still claims exclusive rights to the character and that claim has since gone unchallenged.

Part of me feels like, when your time is up, your time is up. You should be public domain with no extensions or loopholes. On the other hand, as a fan of some of these characters, I don't want to see the DC owned crossover where Batman with prep time wins an arm wrestling match against Popeye with spinach. What I really don't want -- and is most likely to happen -- is a dynamic where smaller companies lose their characters and mega-corps like Warner and Disney keep theirs until all life on Earth comes to an end.
