Some of the jokes and characters from early seasons wouldn't fly today. You can't have a white guy play an Indian. You can't make gay jokes or jokes about transwomen being men. And parents abusing their kids when they get angry is off the table as well.

There have been intellectual properties which have seen updates from generation to generation. You certainly wouldn't see Bugs Bunny wearing blackface today. But I can't think of a show that has been continuously on in one long continuity the way The Simpsons has.

I'm guessing Dr. Who probably had some stuff back in the day that would be racist or sexist when matched against current social standards.

A LA IY would be neat, but LOL @ the age change suggestion. I guess you must think that a high school supernatural romance film wouldn't do well at the box office... despite so many supernatural romance films absolutely killing the box office.

A 22 year old half-demon romances a girl who just turned 15. Par the course for anime. The start of a second Civil War for puritanical America. It's just easier to leave him 22 and age her up to 18 so that it's not weird.

Looking back at a story of mine which I've abandoned, I used to go in circles regarding the four main characters. One is angry much of the time, one is cocky to a fault, one is a total jerk, and one is a good-natured but sensitive individual.

The angry character was a white male. The cocky character was a black female; her personality a combination of Muhammad Ali and Zora Neale Hurston. I never could decide upon the ethnicity of the character who was a total jerk. I would shift between him being Asian or Native American depending on whichever I felt would be less likely to be criticized. And the sensitive character was gay. Yes, that's stereotypical, but it was unavoidable. Him being sensitive was what was important to the character; not him being gay.

Those are the kinds of issues you can run into in writing. Characters A and B are accounted for. Characters C and D carry with them liabilities if you assign them a certain race, sex, or orientation. Do I rewrite my characters' personalities for the sake of allowing a more positive representation or do I stick to my guns and tell potential haters to piss off?

If you write inclusively from the start, it can be smooth sailing until you run into a bump in the road. But if you come up with the characters first and diversify the cast afterward, you start running into those problems where you start second-guessing yourself. ("Is it stereotypical if the greedy one is Latino?")

Inclusivity isn't hard to write.

Oh yes, it is. It's very difficult to keep one eye on well-written characters, one eye on inclusion, and a third eye on making sure a character doesn't fall into stereotypes or have any liabilities in their characterization or relative character role.

My original show is going to be a reboot of The Pirates of Dark Water, and you better believe the only white person in the main cast will be the bad guy. Because I respect the source material.

I literally just finished episode 13. The cast is already racially ambiguous. Bloth is an albino voiced by a black man. Tula appears to be Arab or Middle Eastern. Ioz is... half-black, half-Asian? And Wren is orange with blond hair. So I guess he's whatever Hulk Hogan and Donald Trump are.

In order to get the Netflix treatment, they would all be black women in the remake.

I work at a pharmacy. One inebriated customer claimed he was going to "take the long bus to China" and "blow it up." He then followed it up by saying, "You know they did it, right?" in reference to Covid-19.

I didn't humor him, I didn't argue with him, and I didn't report his utterances of hate to the pharmacist on duty. I simply ignored the remarks and continued conducting business.
