adjl 01/27/20 6:15:00 PM #20 | captpackrat posted... The media whipped up a fear storm about ebola, SARS, MERS, swine flu, bird flu, goat flu, and none of it ever really affected Americans except a very small number who traveled a lot overseas. Again, the fact that those weren't a huge issue was a consequence of a lot of very hard work from public health workers around the world, rather than indicating that they weren't actually dangerous. Without the countermeasures that were applied, they would have been a much bigger deal for Americans. Fortunately, as citizens of developed countries, we do have access to such countermeasures. That's not to say public health officials aren't working their asses off to make sure it won't be a problem (work which the typical "oh I guess that wasn't that big of a deal" response to a looming epidemic very ungratefully ignores), but it's unlikely to end up being a significant problem outside of China. --- This is my signature. The regular person isn't going to understand anything and then take everything out of context when they decide to be a moron and bitch on Twitter. Fortunately, that's a pretty meaningless consequence, meaning it doesn't offset the added logistical costs of identifying every person in the world who's sufficiently legally competent to understand it and sending them a recording of the trial (a process which is itself extremely prone to corruption and political bias because of how subjective that assessment is) compared to simply publicly broadcasting it. Bear in mind that your line of reasoning means you should also be arguing against the publication of scientific research. Since only people in the actual legal process such as lawyers or judges would even understand the evidence. Even if we accept your premise, the vast majority of the lawyers and judges in the world (or even just within the US) are not going to be inside that courtroom, and would therefore benefit from having the trial be transparently publicized. You don't have to get into questions of democracy or corruption or anything like that, your position is just plain factually wrong from the outset. Furthermore, the idea that the information should be controlled because some people might misinterpret it if they had access to it is extremely totalitarian. You are literally saying "most people are too stupid to understand it so we should just rely entirely on the version of the facts provided by a government mouthpiece," which is entirely the opposite of what anyone in a democratic society should be saying. Should there be summaries of the proceedings so that people without legal training can understand what's going on? Absolutely. But that doesn't mean all of the information needs to be kept under wraps except for what's in that summary, because that would prevent people who do have legal training from fact checking it and holding the government accountable for any lies they choose to tell. --- This is my signature. The most that is physically possible is 22 hours, and that's assuming they go right to midnight on both days (which isn't the most reasonable expectation as far as scheduling goes). You can squeeze more out of it by going past midnight and into the next day, since "sessions start at 1 pm" doesn't necessarily mean there can't be anything happening in the early morning that bled over from the previous day, but that still won't count as "over two days" if it happens again on day 2, and that's even less of a reasonable expectation. The consequence of building the game like that, however, is that you don't have as much difficulty progression as you can have when the difficulty curve is controlled by linear progression, which means you either end up with everything being too hard at the beginning, or (as happened with ALBW) everything being too easy once you get a few dungeons in. --- This is my signature. adjl 01/17/20 1:02:52 PM #57 | jkdarlow posted... I wonder whats in these pie if theyre that cheap. Most of the typical ingredients for chicken pot pies are actually very cheap, and if they're being mass produced, the labour/energy costs per pie are pretty negligible. The majority of the cost would come from the chicken (and to a lesser extent, butter, which is generally going to be replaced with shortening in something this cheap), so I'd guess they use some kind of byproduct meat, like whatever they could strain out of a pot of chicken stock (which would be used for other purposes or possibly sold on its own) after boiling a few carcasses. Obviously, it's not going to be a very good pie at that price, but you can actually get them surprisingly cheap without having to sacrifice all ingredients that would qualify as food. Given that this is a sale, it's also likely that the store is selling them at cost or at a small loss to use them as a loss leader. WhiskeyDisk posted... Knowing you have 2 dozen pot pies sitting in the freezer can provide piece of mind after a long and frustrating day when you know you don't have to think about grabbing something on the way home or what to cook. You can just get home, kick off your shoes and throw one of those bad boys in the microwave or oven and 6-20 minutes later, dinner is served with minimal hassle and clean up. That's not wrong, but you can get the same peace of mind by meal prepping for the week before you have that long day, usually with better food. Labour-wise, there's not much difference between pulling a dirt cheap pot pie out of the freezer and pulling a tupperware full of sesame ginger pork and garlic green beans out of the fridge, but the latter's going to taste better and generally be healthier. There's no reason the series couldn't produce another Hector, but until it does (and honestly, "it would encourage them to put a more interesting character into Smash" is a pretty flimsy reason for FE's development team to do such a thing, as much as it'd be nice), I'd agree with Sakurai's apparent decision that the player characters make for more interesting, unique fighters. --- This is my signature. adjl 01/17/20 12:05:31 AM #46 | EvilMegas posted... The whole point of this topic and my point is; we have so many options to choose from that would be exciting and unique, yet they keep going fire emblem sword person route. And Robin, Corrin, and now Byleth demonstrate that "Fire Emblem sword person" can also manage to be exciting and unique. For that matter, even Ike was a substantial departure from Marth/Roy's playstyle (which was really weird given that Ike was generally quite fast in FE9/10, but that's another matter). Each Smash has ended up adding an FE character with a playstyle that differs significantly from the others (SSB4 technically added 2, counting DLC, and we have to either count new DLC or disregard old DLC to say that U added one), as much as people like to distill them down to "sword boys" as though they aren't as distinct from each other as from anyone else in the roster. Does that mean the game needed another FE character? No. Does that mean you have to want another FE character? No. Is there a disproportionate number of FE characters in Smash? Yes (though the series is extremely character-rich, so there's an argument to be made that it isn't actually that disproportionate). But none of these mean "it's just another 'fire emblem sword person'" is in any way a valid criticism of the new character. You can watch the reveal trailer for yourself: Byleth's moveset is no less unique and interesting than that of any other character.
