My friend (23M) just started dating a 19 year old girl and I think it's so weird. We hang out at bars, he can't bring her into a bar. There's just something weird about it! I know it's only a 4 year difference but I think it's only acceptable for there to be an age gap that wide after a certain amount of years. Like idk, when he's 25 and she's 21? Maybe even that is too weird.

It's fine. 4 years is fine. I'm 5 years older than my wife. You guys will need to find new spots to hang out if you don't want to be inconvenienced

My wife is in charge of a 21 year old (long story) and it's not uncommon for her to need to chase away guys in their late 30's trying to date her. But every guy is obviously not trying to date her and only trying to get a hook up or take advantage of her. Almost 20 years is not fine

Pretty much. It abides by the golden rule (23/2+7=18.5), which is only ever a rough guideline anyway, but it presents a problem if hanging out in bars with SO's tagging along is your primary mode of spending time with your friends. That is pretty easy to circumvent, though (don't bring her along, or just hang out at somebody's home instead and enjoy cheaper drinks), so even that isn't much cause for objection.

Well you would do. Nothing wrong with it as both are adults. As for the bar thing? Surely she could go into them as you don't need to drink alcohol to be in a bar. Even if she can't believe it or not but folk do other things than hang out at bars. Crazy I know! Seems to me you're jealous of your "friend".

When I was 23, I thought it was a little awkward to date a 19 y/o. Then years later, I was much more okay with dating 19 y/os. Like they say, with age comes perspective.

Theres something weird about your drinking laws, not their difference in age. Ive worked with eighteen-year-olds who go out drinking all night then go to high school the next day. Your friend and his gf can go to pubs that serve food as well as drinks.

I've been to certain bars that allow 18 year olds in, but they can't drink. Almost like club. But it depends on the bar. I also know that Texas (and maybe other places as well) has a law that you can drink under 21 provided you are married to someone over 21 who is there. You do have to have the marriage certificate. I had friends who have used this rule. So, I've seen it multiple times.

As for the dating, it's not weird. Like many others have said, 4 years is nothing. Provided that they are both adults, it doesn't matter. Not to mention, it seems like they could have gone to school together. Also, They shouldn't have to wait a few more years before dating just so it can be ok with you.

Just a reminder that famous people in their 50-60s+ are dating people half their age. Young women in other countries are attempting suicide because they dont want to marry some old geezer. No girl is at the bar looking to date the same way as they did before 21. You should rethink how the world works.

This too. I mean 18 year old can drink alcohol legally over here so there isn't anything a 18 year old can't when compared to any other adults for the most part. Although if you can drink alcohol or not legally seems a weird thing to base this off but here we are.

It also means they're at different stages of life, in many cases. The aforementioned 21 and 17 one is kind of weird to me, because 18-22 (typical university age) is an age range where people often mature quite dramatically due to being out on their own and making concrete decisions about their careers and futures. Being in a relationship with somebody who's still in high school therefor just seems odd to me. Of course, individuals vary and there's no shortage of couples in those ages ranges for whom the maturity difference isn't present, so that's hardly an absolute thing.

Im of the strong belief that that growing done is from life experiences not simply growing older. Numbers don't just make you wiser. People shouldn't be sheltered because experiences help them grow. Better to make mistakes younger then to make those same mistakes instead when you are in your mid/late twenties, like me lol.

They're both adults, and 4 years doesn't seem like a very big age difference, so I see no problem with this. However, if I were the guy, I'd feel weird going onto her college's campus to hang out with her and her college friends; I'd just feel like an invader. It's simply a feeling I have; I'm not sure where it came from.
