I want to go with 2008. The dot-com bubble's effects were still rippling through the country in the form of Enron's massive fraud, and it resulted in an economic crash that was touted as the worst economic disaster since the Great Depression. The post-9/11 mindset had been entrenched in the culture for seven years at this point, though if nothing else the scars were beginning to heal. It was a momentous year with Barack Obama's election as the President, which I genuinely regard as one of the higher points of the 2000's after the shit show that was George W Bush - but for my 13 year old chud ass over in Australia, thousands of miles across the ocean, the world had never felt more uncertain.

2008 has been the only year in my entire life that feels like it ended on a cliffhanger. 2009 could have destroyed everything I ever knew - if our government didn't pull some sick maneuvers to get us out of the GFC, my family could have been one of the lower income families who would have really suffered from a financial crash. There was a new president, but he was unproven - could he fix everything, or were things destined to spiral further out of control? We're still at war in the Middle East, how are we gonna get out of that?

I'm sure that there have been worse years in American history for human suffering, but in my lifetime, 2008 was the year that felt like everything hung in the balance. For a lot of people, that might have been 2001 - but I was 6 years old and I didn't really grasp the reality of the situation until I was older. I was cognisant in 2008, and for all I know, everything was going to go down the shitter.

I'm sure the game will be very open, stealthy and fun, and I hope it meets fan expectations. So why do I want it to fail? I'm sick of the fucking ads.

I've been getting ads for months. I get it, the guy who plays The Punisher is in it. It's le tacticool action game for cool action gamers - I don't need it being jammed down my fucking throat every time I open up YouTube. I'm not going to buy it.

Ubisoft did the same thing with The Division - that game was smeared across every YouTube video I saw that Christmas. The same shrill, le spoopy war timeline trailer that tries to go for the emotional gut punch by using a child singing a Christmas Carol in the trailer.

Yeah, you gotta advertise - you have billboards, giant bus-side ads, YouTube ads. You gotta blow your millions of dollars on advertising. I get it. But maybe cut it down to a manageable level, and not to the point where it chases people for months on end.

Just once, I want a game's obscene advertising budget to backfire and earn whichever company a decent amount of ire. I want John Ubisoft, the fatcat CEO that jerks off Far Cry, Ubisoft and the Tom Clancy games, to lose money - even if the game is perfectly fine. Something, anything, to get companies like Ubisoft to stop advertising their games in ways that feel like getting catapulted in the face with a watermelon. Fuck you.

This is old news from 2015, but the fact that this shit exists in the first place is worth discussing.

Code in laser printouts rats on users and devices.

Researchers with digital rights lobby group Electronic Frontier Foundation have decoded the secret forensic tracking codes Fuji-Xerox DocuColor laser printers embed in documents.

The codes are used by the United States Secret Service and other national government agencies to associate printed out documents with specific printers, revealing information such as date, time, and device serial numbers.

A team of five researchers working as part of EFF's machine identification code technology project noted anomalous yellow dots being included in printouts from Fuji-Xerox DocuColor printers.

The yellow dots are visible but hard for the naked eye to see. Using a microscope, the researchers were able to make them out, and deduce that the dots could be used to encode up to 14 seven-bit bytes of tracking data that shows down to the minute when a document was printed out.

EFF has made the source code available as a free download, licensed under the GNU general public licence (GPL).

Fuji-Xerox is one of several printer manufacturers that agreed to embed a data tracking facility in its devices at government request.

Originally intended as an effort by the US Secret Service to track and identify counterfeiters, the use of embedded tracking information in printouts has been linked to government spying on political, human rights and environmental organisations over the past years, sparking fears of privacy violations.

Although the EFF said it was safest to assume that all laser printers embed tracking information of some form, testing showed that some devices from HP, OKIdata, Samsung and Fuji-Xerox's Phaser range did not include the yellow tracking dots in documents.

So basically, you might want to start looking for a printer that doesn't have personally identifiable markings on every page of paper that you print.
