The base weapons got some good quality of life improvements in their base forms, and the upgrades improved their utility for the most part. The Haven City vehicles were a welcome return, but I maintain that Jak 3 handled vehicles better by virtue of the work they put into the Spargus vehicles. I'll take a Sand Shark over a purple hover-sedan any day. With 3, Jak was a more balanced character than in 2. Jak and Daxter will always be the favorite, but Jak 3 was an excellent game from the mid-point of the PS2's life cycle and Jak 2 is an awkward middle child. | MrMallard 10/10/19 8:45:31 AM #3 | RdVEHfJqAvUPIbk posted... Valve sucks because they won't release HL3, that's all. The reason I brought up Epic Games in particular is because they went from developing games and licensing their own game engine to giving 48.4% of their stocks to Tencent ltd and developing an online game storefront to rival Steam. Taking people's personal information when you're that close to China's influence just doesn't sit right with me, and it's a far cry from when they were actively developing game series that people loved. I actually think that the Epic Games Store is a good idea, especially giving developers a bigger cut of each sale, but by working that closely with Tencent it feels like the information (and money) they receive through the Epic Games Store can end up in the hands of China. Activision Blizzard are only 5% owned by Tencent, and look how hard they ass-blasted this guy. I wouldn't trust a company like Epic Games when it's almost jointly owned by a company that gives its information to the Chinese government. This time it's Blizzard, but a company that's 48.4% owned by Tencent is a company that's worth keeping an eye on IMO. I still think it's dumb that Valve stopped making games and decided to get fat off if other people's video games. And Bethesda's move towards shit like Fallout 76 and Elder Scrolls: Blades - i.e. microtransactions and cheap, shitty games that barely work, even moreso than the usual hate brigade tend to whine about - is especially demoralising. These are still issues. Activision Blizzard deserve to be condemned for this action, but that doesn't change just how much these other companies have changed for the worse over the years. --- And I am done with my graceless heart, so tonight I'm gonna cut it out and then restart Now Playing: Yakuza 5, Final Fantasy X-2, Minecraft |

| MrMallard 10/10/19 8:31:09 AM #1 | https://www.pcgamer.com/au/blizzard-employees-staged-a-walkout-over-hearthstone-grandmasters-suspension/ Blizzard's harsh punishment of former Hearthstone Grandmaster Chung 'blitzchung' Ng Wai over his call for the liberation of Hong Kong caused a powerful backlash against the company. According to a Daily Beast report, some of that reaction has come from within the company itself, as a small number of employees walked out of work yesterday afternoon to protest its actions. I think that there are some very good people working at Blizzard, but their deal with Activision and Tencent has led to a point where they basically have to get fucked in the ass over shit like this. Activision Blizzard wants to keep making money in China, so they have to put their worst foot forward and suck China's cock during a period where their country is trying to exert control over a territory they had next to no authority in. Blizzard has had its hiccups, but it has a strong history of being benevolent towards its fans, of being the player's choice for a good many people. This reputation has been damaged by titles like Diablo 3 in the past, but that doesn't change the fact that they were adored once upon a time. But then again, look at Bethesda. Look at Valve. Hell, look at Epic Games. Expansion has only ever hurt this industry, to the point that it's a handful of mega-corporations running most of the gaming scene nowadays. Blizzard's merging with Activision in 2013 put them on this road, and I feel bad for the people who went to work there expecting it to be one of the great cornerstones of American game development. Despite their own values, and what they see as the values that Blizzard has championed in the past, they're all complicit in China's war against Hong Kong. Even as we grow up and look back on this period of our lives with disdain and scorn, the fact that this happened is worth commenting on. It was stupid at the time, but that person didn't know better at the time. That pain meant something. Creep might signify a gross period of time in a lot of people's lives, and the people who never grow out of this mindset are legitimately a problem. It can be said that songs like Creep can even reinforce and bolster the mindset of people who eschew personal growth for entitlement and whining. Frankly, I understand the renewed backlash for Creep in the face of these 20-something turds huddling in their groups and talking about how women should be assigned to them by the government so that they can feel like men. But saying that, Creep was a catchy song that resonated with a lot of people at one point or another in their lives, and I think it's a good song because of that. And I firmly believe that a lot of people reach a breaking point after a bunch of shit, and they tend to shift that built-up pressure onto this one thing - so just kinda being fobbed off with some corny shit like that can feel especially galling when there's a lot more riding on this one issue. What's a good way to react, then? Honestly, just have a little bit of empathy and be real about it. The first movie ended pretty definitively, and the second movie opens with John wiping out the rest of Viggo's empire for... some reason. Then Douchebag McGee comes into the picture without a balancing force, like Viggo's son without a grounded force like Viggo - he's just a dick for the sake of being a dick, which was just grating. I wasn't hot on that airport scene with the pistol sniping, and the ending was just kind of polarising. And this is mostly a nitpick, but Keanu Reeves uses the shoulder-throw like 24 times over the whole movie. He used it a lot in the first movie, but it happened to the point of distraction in the second movie. The action was fun, especially when But saying that, John Wick 2 was a worthy sequel to John Wick 1 and it's still a very kinetic action movie that raised the bar from the first movie. | Topic | John Wick 1 > John Wick 3 > John Wick 2, but all 3 are an 80% or higher |
| MrMallard 10/08/19 6:07:15 AM #14 | Here's the reasoning behind my ranking: John Wick 1 is a great self-contained movie. The action is heavy and brutal, the whole "unstoppable killing machine", from-nobody-to-nightmare angle was a bit simple but effective compared to its contemporaries of the time, and the slow, deliberate pacing of the dialogue was a step removed from the lolsorandum quippy nature of a lot of movies of the time too. Yeah, John Wick is kinda boring and invincible at times, but it feels so much more grounded compared to a Marvel or a Transformers flick. The movie starts at the end, and the ending of the movie is strong enough to stand on its own. John Wick 2 felt kind of silly at points. John hides guns in a rocky tunnel and goes through them as he escapes from a place, the villain is just a powertripping douchebag who was joyless to watch, and while it had a gripping cliffhanger, a part of me didn't know how to feel that there was a cliffhanger in the first place. The first movie had some dipshit little daddy's-boy incur the wrath of the world's greatest assassin without realising, and the interactions between that dipshit and his father who knew what was in store from John Wick felt really good and tangible. The first movie had a really tight handle on characterisation, from Viggo and his gang to Willem Defoe to the Continental, and I don't know if it made the transfer in 2 (except the Continental, the strongest part of all three movies have been Winston and Charon). The villain in particular felt like this shithead who wouldn't stop poking a hornet with a stick despite knowing damn well the dangers of it, and it wasn't fun for me to see this shit-eating troglodyte poke and poke over the course of a movie. I get that characters like this are meant to be hated, but I hated this character to the detriment of the movie. Regardless - John Wick 2 is a really solid action movie and I enjoyed it well enough. John Wick 3 went a bit too in-depth with the different symbols. So now there's a crucifix and another marker, and a bunch of rabbits in a hat that John has to use by the end of the movie - it's kind of silly. I also wasn't the biggest fan of Halle Berry's character, and some of the locations and lore revelations felt a bit too massive - one of my favorite parts of John Wick are how mysterious and low-key the assassin lore is. But the action in this movie is a masterclass in modern action cinematography, and the sheer depths that John stoops to so he can hold onto his life is a hell of a journey. From the first 5 minutes of John Wick 3, John is desperate, cornered and dangerous - and he doesn't stop moving and rampaging for the entire length of the movie. This is the first 2 hour movie in ages where I checked the time and found 40 minutes left on the clock, and was actually excited to watch the rest of the movie. --- And I am done with my graceless heart, so tonight I'm gonna cut it out and then restart Now Playing: Yakuza 5, Final Fantasy X-2, Minecraft |

But if push comes to shove, would you be opposed to someone using antidepressants to manage their condition? If a transgender person exhausted all available resources and still felt depressed, anxious and suicidal, would surgery not be an avenue worth pursuing? Cognitive behavioral therapy might be able to help - with depression or body dysphoria, funnily enough - but body dysphoria can be treated with hormone replacement therapy and gender reassignment surgery. There will always be cases of body dysphoria where everyone in a person's sphere of influence accepts them, they can present as their preferred gender in their day to day lives, they find a romantic partner who loves them dearly for who they are - but their dysphoria will continue to haunt them because a piece of their identity needs to be changed thanks to dysphoria. This condition - which leads into a myriad of personality disorders and mental illnesses if not treated - can be treated through hormone replacement therapy and gender reassignment surgery. It's a big step, but the legal and medical recognition of their preferred gender shouldn't be underestimated here. It shouldn't be ruled out, even considering the people who misdiagnosed their condition and had to de-transition sometime in the future. Some depressed people might be able to make their condition more bearable through intense therapy, moving to somewhere more bearable and surrounding themselves with less toxic people, but even then, anti-depressants tend to help their condition. And there will be cases where a depressed person will not be able to function without anti-depressants. And the negative mental state that comes with gender dysphoria can be alleviated by transitioning to another gender. That's what this article is saying - trans people who undertake gender-affirming surgery generally try to kill themselves less and seek less hospital time for personality disorders like anxiety and suicide. Getting surgery and HRT stabilises them, while suffering the effects of gender dysphoria puts them at higher risk of personality disorders and suicide attempts. You wouldn't deny a depressed person antidepressants, because that treatment helps to level them out and make them feel better. | MrMallard 10/07/19 9:40:10 AM #1 | I spent a bunch of time as a teenager hating avocados, mainly because of the big media push towards them. We had a Subway ad where two women kept one-upping each other about how much they loved avocados - one of them had an avocado car, the other one had a baby named Avocado. long story short, it was fucking annoying. But in the last year, I've gotten to try avocado in a bunch of different things. Honestly, it's pretty nice. My current problem is that avocado doesn't taste like anything to me. It has a taste, but I have no way of discerning what it is. It's very mild, and I just have a lot of trouble putting my finger on it. It has a unique texture, and it has its own taste, but it's not something like a cucumber or capsicum/bell pepper where the flavor is instant and iconic. I think I'm just not used to it yet. I still can't help but hate when something like avocado is shoved in my face by the zeitgeist. It's the new trend, it's so good for you, it's taking over the culinary world! Cool, I'll try it when I try it, stop jamming it down my throat already. But I've definitely come around on avocado. | Topic | Job applicant outraged after company shares her bikini photo on Instagram |
| MrMallard 10/06/19 4:11:08 PM #36 | Conflict posted... As she should be because that's extremely unprofessional "Hey follow our Instagram to get an edge over other applicants!" *does so* "Haha wow look at this clown! This absolute clod! Having a good time with her boobs out! Why would you send this to a potential employer? What a bad fucking idea lmao!" If they're going to plug their Instagram in their job interview, the least they could do is abstain from taking other people's pictures and reposting them to publically mock them. Like yeah, if you post something dumb online and a potential employer finds out, they have a good reason to deny that job applicant - but this company is plugging their social media on a platform that's known for casual, feelgood content, and then getting shitty and smug because an applicant - like a million other Instagram users - went to the beach once and put a pic or two up on the platform. They have the gall to get uppity about a beach pic when Instagram, of all the fucking social media platforms, is borderline made for beach pics. They solicited this applicant's account on one of the most bougie, gentrified apps on the market, and they feel justified in insulting her choice of presentation - they didn't ask for her Facebook account or LinkedIn or whatever the fuck, they went for the trendy app and got shitty about an applicant trying to be trendy. And even if they turned her down or didn't think her presentation was appropriate - which they're justified in doing for their own personal or professional reasons - they shouldn't have used her likeness to make a public example of her. Reposting her pictures to get on their high horse was just a dick move, and they sound like shitty, toxic people as they try to toe the company line while the applicant publically defends herself. --- And I am done with my graceless heart, so tonight I'm gonna cut it out and then restart Now Playing: Yakuza 5, Final Fantasy X-2, Minecraft |

| Topic | Google has dirt on me from 2011 onwards. Search terms, webpages, location. |
| MrMallard 10/06/19 12:38:34 PM #1 | So I fell down a TIL rabbit hole. The original topic was that phones can be triggered by audio cues broadcast from TVs, usually ads, and that Google or Apple can essentially pinpoint your location and identify how many people are in the same room watching that ad. So I click on a few links. I get redirected to a news article from 2017. Cool, looking forward to scrolling through all this, finding a few keywords and further researching the topic - naturally, by Googling it. But the article opens with a blurb about how you can view your entire search history with Google through their "My Activity" tool. Having just reset my Google password, I decide to give it a look. I started small - my first stop was in January 2019. I accidentally activated Google Assistant in public, which happens when I hold the toolbar circle down for too long. My location was on, because I was playing Pokemon Go. Google showed me a blue square radius of where I was when they registered this activity. It told me the exact time, date and location when I used this service. So I decide to test how far back this thing goes. Long story short, it ends on what could be the same day I created the account - March 14, 2011. I would have been 15 at the time. At 2.24 PM on March 14, 2011, I googled "Crash Team Racing hack" and "flash game gallery". At 5.50 PM on November 9, 2011, I accessed a torrenting website. At 6.00 PM on December 13, I googled ROMs. Anyone with my email address and password can view this information. If someone questioned me on what I was doing at 3 PM on July 24, 2013, I wouldn't be able to tell them. If someone had access to my Google account, they could hold me accountable for some stupid shit I don't even remember from when I was 17. What if someone decides that a person's Google history is admissible to a court of law? If a country has access to this information, which it most likely does, my google searches can be linked to my name in the same way that my birth certificate, credit transactions and license are. Can Nintendo subpoena Google for definitive, existing information that proves that a person googled ROM websites a few times 7 years ago? I came across porn websites I visited as a teenager. I came across a lot of shit that a 15 year old shouldn't have been googling. That information still exists, and there's a non-zero percent chance that there are other people on this planet who can view and use this information without my knowledge or consent. And if you have a Google account, then that same information has been collected from you and is just as accessible to anyone with your email address and password. To cap off, here's what I learned tonight. You can view the exact time, date and location you asked Google to find you a song. You can visit the specific porn link you visited as a teenager 8 and a half years ago, even if that specific pornographic encounter has been scrubbed from your mind for the better half of a decade. You can scroll though walls of entries that display an active search for a Pokemon ROM to play. No matter how we move on and forget about it, this information still exists and is still attached to your name, face and voice. Yeah, we all know that corporations are keeping our information and selling it - we've become accustomed to this fact. But you can see the information that they've been collecting this whole time, all the way back to the origin of your Google account. If you don't like all this crackpot privacy shit, that's your business - but now that you know how to access this information, you might want to see what easily-traceable information exists about you and your internet habits, and decide if you're comfortable with a corporation collecting, maintaining and selling it. --- And I am done with my graceless heart, so tonight I'm gonna cut it out and then restart Now Playing: Yakuza 5, Final Fantasy X-2, Minecraft |
| Topic | The latter half of 2019 has been the real FF9 vindication period |
| MrMallard 10/06/19 9:16:08 AM #1 | FF9 has always been a pretty popular entry in the fanbase, but I don't think it's unreasonable to say that the huge amount of FF7 clowns on the early internet kinda skewed the perception of 9 a little bit. Trance sucks, cards suck, battles take too long, bad writing (in relation to 7, naturally), it's a step backwards after 7 pushed the envelope etc. It had its fans and defenders, but for the stretch of time that FF7 was openly touted as the best Final Fantasy game by the vocal fanboys, its stature was diminished to a degree. 9 saw a renaissance about a year before it got ported, all the way through to when the port dropped. It got its fair share of the limelight. But it's only been in the last couple of months that it feels like the game has been spreading its wings in my sphere of influence. Between the game getting played on Vinesauce, these FF9 threads that have been dropping on CE a lot lately and Austin Eruption dropping a 2 part video series about it, the FF9 love has been real recently. --- And I am done with my graceless heart, so tonight I'm gonna cut it out and then restart Now Playing: Yakuza 5, Final Fantasy X-2, Minecraft |

Any statically racist view of a country's entire population or culture is wrong - but China's government has been trying to get into bed with anyone it can to stab them in the back or control their debt. Fuck Xi Jinping, the dictator of China, fuck their propaganda app and fuck the efforts they take to undermine every there nation in the world. The state of China can fuck off - the people and culture are fine, but Winnie the Pooh and his shitty cronies can go and fuck themselves.
