| EvenSpoonier 12/15/19 11:02:13 AM #5 | Pretty much the only 100% sure way to tell your phone has been hacked is to catch it in the act of doing something you can be absolutely sure it wasn't authorized by you to do, and isn't just a bug. This is harder than it seems, partly because hackers can mask their actions to a certain extent, and partly because a computer's ordinary behavior can get so complex that can be hard to tell whether or not a particular thing is really something you authorized. There are products out there like intrusion detection systems that can help with this to a limited degree, but they have limitations and drawbacks. Perhaps the biggest drawback is that none of them can be trusted unless you install them on an un-hacked machine: you have to plan ahead and put them in place before an attack happens. So they're doing the next best thing: training dispatchers to pick up on cues that a victim might leave in a call. Essentially the idea is to let the victim write their own code, as needed. The ludicrousness, at least at first glance, was the whole point: it made things that much more horrifying when you realized Lovecraft wasn't just playing around.
