I feel if he had his own trilogy to work with it'd work out fine. Thats TLJs main issue is that it swerved so hard in a different direction that it was jarring. And didnt make sense from a story perspective. Its not a bad movie or story on its own. Its just not good in the overall scheme of being a tent pole Star Wars movie. It also suffers from an issue that there is no time jump between movies which every other Star Wars has had. In that time, they announced a whole different trilogy and then fucking announced that the showrunners left. While mentioning nothing about RJ's stuff. They also announced Kevin Feige's movie, which is probably the next SW movie. Even when D&D were there, the calendar seemed way too full till 2027 to position his trilogy. At best, he gets a movie or series on Disney+. Nonetheless, I think Iger over anybody else realizes that you have to be careful with SW fanboys and there's little reason to go overboard. Look at the reception with The Mandalorian. JJ set his movie up so well for a sequel but Rian completely scrapped his draft and made the dry, stretched out and overall bland movie in TLJ. Although TLJ was a disappointment, I think Johnson is at least competent enough to make a decent original trilogy.
