My biggest problem with this bracket is that the losers are dropped in order. If Mega Man somehow loses to Monika/Pikachu/whoever and then wins his first loser's bracket match, he's "rewarded" with another match against the character that just beat him.

That's generally how loser's brackets in (e)sports work so he modeled it almost exactly like that.

No it's not, unless fighting games just do things differently than other eSports.

For example: https://smash.gg/tournament/super-smash-con-2018/events/wii-u-1v1-singles/brackets/339305/675057

Note how someone who loses in round 1 is sent to the opposite side of loser's bracket as compared to someone who loses in round 2.

Also, I am taking Estelle to win her match. Losing a point will be totally worth it.

I think she has a chance! I'm picking her almost for sure

If I were betting my life on this I'm probably taking Isaac, but for the stakes we are playing for I wouldn't be able to live it down if I missed a point by picking against Estelle in a remotely debatable match.

Ok more reactions:

--Really like what Allen did with the finals with seeding most of the NN and also adding the loser's bracket. (Though I do wish the loser's bracket didn't work in a way that generated a ton of rematches)

--Lmao I can't believe Neptunia actually made the bracket. Was there a B8 rally I wasn't aware of or was this just off her own popularity?

--Oh god Sans also has a solid bracket for building a rally, especially since unlike Monika I expect that Sans has reasonably high raw strength anyways.

--Holy crap Estelle might actually win a match

--Bowser > Cloud in the quarterfinals is a lock don't @ me

--Overall I really like this bracket. Tons of round 1 matches that interest me: Tidus/DK, Noctis/Master Hand(!), Crash/Cecil (lol), Alucard/Peach, Kefka/L-Block, Shadow/Ness, Estelle/Isaac, Metal Sonic/The Boss, Shovel Knight/Captain Toad, Geralt/Rosalina, Bayo/Riku, Magus/Vincent, DDD/Ocelot

I like the rest also though. Most Xeno- music is pretty great.

Welp. Spoiled myself on something that happens in My Hero Academia. Again.

I guess this is what I get for browsing wikis for newly introduced characters without a care in the world. Most spoilers I end up not caring about in the first place (including the other times with this series) which is why I'm willing to do this in the first place, but this one was kind of a bummer.

(MHA manga spoilers, past where the anime is but not sure beyond that) Specifically, I was looking at the page on Mirio Togata and I happened to glance at the "Quirk" section of his bio on the right.

Ah. Yea. Weeeeeeeeell, there's a bunch of context you're still in the dark about!

This is still true but I did intentionally look up a bit more than that, as I often prefer having some context to no context after I've already been spoiled on something like this.

Specifically I know that it wasn't due to All for One but has something to do with who I think are the bad guys of the upcoming arc. Though I don't know what exactly leads to this confrontation or anything like that.

Just got back from the My Hero Academia movie

Ok so this movie has some silly stuff in it, and it doesn't really offer anything that the TV series didn't already. None of that really matters though because it still managed to put a huge smile on my face from start to finish. Don't really have anything else to say overall, but I do have a few scattered comments about specific things:

--One of the most hilarious things about this movie to me was the evident ease with which the characters were able to flawlessly communicate with one another through nothing but subtle eye twitches. By like the 5th time this scene happened I just started laughing out loud and I think I might have been the only one in the theater laughing at that.

--I'm really glad that the movie started and ended with shots of two bald eagles flying through the sky. Just in case, you know, we forgot the movie had AMERICA in it.

--Wish we got more time for just random Class 1-A shenanigans, though that's also something I've been saying about the TV series itself.

--I was not ready for the fangirl squealing at shirtless Kirishima from behind me at the theater. (And whenever anyone from Class 1-A appeared but that's the main one I remember)

--I wish they didn't take the direction they did with Dave's character.

I don't think you can really make any effective argument for Estelle here other than her intrinsic strength as a character. I cannot see match pic factor or character design ever working in Estelle's favor.

The way I see this match is as "side character from a relatively niche but well-loved series" vs. "main character from a slightly more niche but well loved series", and in matches like that I'm inclined to bet on the main character.

We'll never know for sure (part of why raising allegations which can never be disproven because of a complete lack of details/evidence is so insidious), but nothing we've seen indicates that he was guilty. I also thought Christine Ford came across as genuinely traumatized, she just didn't have anything to back up her claims (and had been refuted by all of the people she mentioned as having been there). Ultimately I feel bad for both of them. I can't imagine nearly reaching the pinnacle of your profession only for this sort of thing to happen, just as I can't imagine coming forward with a confidential sexual assault allegation and having it leaked into the press, causing you to receive death threats etc. In short, we should give both of them the benefit of the doubt.

Best line I've seen about this anywhere, not that either side of this trash is mature enough to know what "benefit of the doubt" or "innocent until proven guilty" means.

I actually somewhat agree with this post for the record.

Hard disapprove of labeling these allegations as insidious, but I do also think that the court of public opinion should not be so quick to condemn the accused in situations like this.

Finished a few shows this week.

Asobi Asobase
I don't really have a lot to say about this show. The humor style is probably not everyone's cup of tea but I really enjoyed this. Easily in my top 5 anime comedies, though I generally like comedies less than other types of shows so that only puts it on my top 50 or so anime. Maeda was easily the highlight of the show even though the main trio is all great also.

Steins;Gate 0
What a ride this entire series has been. If you forced me to make a decision I'd probably say this wasn't quite as good as the original anime which had slightly better emotional high points, but they're both top tier anime in their own right. One thing that really impressed me about S;G 0 though is how much I loved the sci-fi elements themselves in this story. (minor spoilers for S;G and S;G 0) While Steins;Gate is definitely one of the smarter time travel stories out there that I know of and generally has solid execution, it's essential core is that of a pretty basic tried-and-true time loop story. Steins;Gate 0 though felt like it had a lot more to it. There's multiple different world lines that influence each other in substantial ways; there's multiple time periods that play important roles in the plot, and the presence of more than one "bad guy" faction also spiced things up a bit. I do agree with what Mac seemed to say in that I liked the first half of the anime a bit more than the second half. The first managed to deliver on all of the tension and emotional weight that the original series had, but the second half felt like it was missing...something I can't quite put my finger on. Also just want to say Maho is amazing and might even be my #2 favorite character in the series now. (Okabe is undisputed #1 especially after S;G 0, with Kurisu/Mayuri/Maho all vying for 2nd)

(Larger spoilers for Steins;Gate 0) Also I just want to say that even though I'm not sure it needed to happen at all, the post-credits scene of the last episode made me feel some kind of something. In the first episode of Steins;Gate this guy is busy making delusional monologues at a cartoon character on his computer screen and now he's in literally 18,000 BC stepping out of a time machine looking like an actual god. Really drives home how far he's gone to protect the ones he cares about.

My one remaining hope for this series is that in the Steins Gate worldline Professor Leskinen can finally find his Japanese shaman girls.

My Hero Academia Season 3
Generally speaking this show hasn't changed much since the first two season, but in terms of the actual quality of the story I feel like it keeps getting better. The Training Camp/Hideout Raid arcs were probably the high point of the series so far for a number of reasons which I probably already talked about. The Hero License arc wasn't at the same level unfortunately, but I did still really enjoy it. And honestly it's better than the relatively weak arcs of the first and second season anyways, so I'm not complaining. Also the Hero License arc gave us Deku vs. Bakugo which is probably my favorite fight of the series now? I don't even know anymore though there's so many great ones. Also this upcoming arc looks pretty hype. I'm not totally sold on Overhaul who hasn't done a lot yet, but Mirio and the rest of the Big Three are already fantastic.

But what you're implying sounds to me an awful lot like absolving them for supporting policies that I just don't think are indefensible.

You're not that far off here!

I'm fine declaring policies or (in extreme cases) individuals as reprehensible. I certainly have my share of problems with current Republican politicians/policies but I am not okay extending those claims to large aggregates of people just on the basis of where they fall on the political spectrum. Maybe some of them are just voting out of self-interest? Maybe they feel really strongly about one or two particular issues and are only voting on that basis? Maybe they just don't really don't follow politics and don't know about or are misinformed on some of these issues? I don't know and I don't really care.

To maybe succinctly state my views on this--the point of political debate as I see it is not to "win the debate" or to establish the infallible correctness of your beliefs and your moral principles. The point is to attempt reach a common ground by presenting and evaluating different points of view and coming to a consensus. While I recognize this ideal isn't always possible, making broad sweeping statements about the moral character of large groups of people is not conducive to that end and will only worsen the social divide that exists today, which means I don't think that behavior has any place in legitimate political discussion.

I also don't think this whole sexual predation thing is inherently male. If women had the same number of powerful positions there absolutely would be some around (hi Asia Argento!). It's just that women are rarely in a position to do such and far more often in a position to be sexually abused. Very unfortunate, but I also disagree with people who say women MUST apply for more positions of power to prevent this stuff from happening. In fact, that idea sounds worse the more I think about it.

I think it's less a function of who is actually in positions of power and more reflective of the fact that our society is one that generally believes men to be more powerful than women. (ie. I am proposing that men at a subconscious level on average believe they are in a position of power in male-female relationships, which is what leads to this, regardless of the actual social status of anyone involved)

Social conditioning is strong and I don't think there's any easy solution to that problem.
