Is Nate "molten" Silver still relevant after the 2016 election

more relevant, not less

the idea that nate got it wrong about trump is one of the most persistent, and most blatant, lies about the 2016 campaign prediction process

he outlined the exact path trump would need to win with, the probability of it happening (which he put at approx 30% EDIT: 28.6%) and noted that it would have to also be a case of winning the EC without the popular vote, because clinton had a lock on the popular vote.

the scenario he outlined as a potential trump win--ultra narrow victories in all the swing states--was the scenario that occurred.

i know how much it hurts to see short-term value of an investment fall

you feel like, 'man if i had timed this better it'd be so much more long run'

but i have learned trying to time it better results in missing the trade entirely and you're worse off

worst case this is 2008 again, and in 5 years your investment will be positive--and throughout the 5 years of declines youll get to invest a lot of money in the downturn

i plan on investing 50k per year every year so any down years are going to help

are late-game techs comparably expensive?

one thing i loved about v was that a player who built his civ around chasing a victory type did not wind up in a "press end era 20 times to win" situation; he could set up his engine to explode and within a turn or two have won the game

it was much like alpha centauri in that regard and my favorite thing about civ v by far. babylon could go from 'tech lead, but we can beat them eventually' to 'oh shit he wins next turn, gotta nuke him or we're done!'

beyond earth initiated the ultra long victory marathon situation and i hated that

clinton is an interesting illustration of how the dems today are of two minds

a sizable chunk of the party is trying to get back to helping labor and curtailing the power of capital in our democracy

the other half--her half--is vastly more interested in locking down women and minority voters long term, and prioritizes race and feminist issues above all others.

i think hers is a much more cynical way to do politics. might be the correct half, though: it might be too late to save workers from the effects of globalization and monopsony.
