Extremely unconventional job that I Iucked into right out of highschool. A friend called and said they needed another guy to replace someone who quit. On the job training, 24 hours a week weekends only, pays a yearly wage for 6 months of work and can gamble and drink while working now that i've gained the trust of my boss.

I literally went through hell to get this job. I was out of college for three years and for two of those years could only find a job at Staples retail. I found something close to what I wanted in March of last year. But it was only temporary and only worked for about a month there.

Last September, I applied for this job that had qualifications for the field I went to school for. I hadn't heard back from them for a week. So, I sent out a follow-up email (which is something that someone had recently strongly encourage me to do). That same day, they asked me to do a phone interview and they were impressed with my follow-up email. I did the phone interview, and at the end of it, I was told they already wanted me to come in for an in-person interview before the phone interview started. This was the first time where I felt there might be a chance.

Went in, did the interview, asked when I would hear back from them. They told me sometime the next week. The next day, they called me and offered me the job. I broke down in tears.

Had 2 interviews a week apart, really wanted this, since I was only getting paid $10 an hour, and this was 32k.

They said I want chosen.

Then 2 months later, called and said the person didn't work out (never started), then offered me the job.

It was a classified ad in the paper for a sales position, on the spot interviews, just printed out a resume and went in. It was pretty much a boys club/frat atmosphere and I went to same school as the guy that hired me (yes it was that easy) although hes not at the company anymore. Two and half years in I started inventory and sales floor management and hiring as well. Its crazy though I was really scared of this job because the economy was still recovering and really dependent on sales during that time but we performed well even despite all of that. 80-85% of the time were messing around not doing much. I think out of all of the years only one month was stressful after one bad quarter of performance.

I applied online on a Wednesday. Tuesday I had a phone interview with HR. That Friday I interviewed with the hiring manager. And then I had my offer in hand on Thursday, countered on Friday, which they accepted that day. So all told, just over two weeks.

Applied. Never heard anything for several months so I assumed I was turned down. Then got an email from my now boss asking if I was still interested. So I said yes and we set up a call. Then I did a take home test. Then a four hour interview at the location. Then I got an offer.

It was really random. I honestly thought it was a long shot when I applied since they asked for so much experience. I was really happy when he reached out.

i called a guy i met once and told him i was looking

he remembered me and brought me in for an interview for a listed position i was not qualified for

they altered their hiring requirement and got me started

big driver was that i had already gotten a security clearance so they didn't have to shell out for that. the process of getting that costs more than my first 1-2 years' salary

Applied at an entry level position.
Worked it for 1.5 years
Applied for promotion (took a couple aptitude tests, sat a couple interviews)
Got promoted
Got promoted

To provide further context, I've been working or volunteering in this field since high school freshman year. People don't tend to stay in library work unless they like the people and the culture.

Got a linkedin message from a recruiter at my old job. I generally am never interested, but I google each company and the position to see if it's an upgrade, a promotion, a pay increase, or what have you. Generally they would all be lateral moves, but this one turned out to be a straight up promotion at a respectable company, so I took it.

Veggeta X posted...
How many interviews and how did it go?

Two. One in-person with my direct boss, then a phone interview with his boss.

Veggeta X posted...
How long did it take for them to hire you?

The whole process took a stupid long time just because of scheduling conflicts. It's hard to leave your current job to go interview for another one, all while you're supposed to be on the clock. From the day she messaged me to the day I started took about two months (though I officially accepted the offer about two weeks prior, but I put in my two-weeks notice (which they let me do one week because I wanted to have a week off between jobs) and then had that week off).

As for anxiety, I wasn't really anxious because I was just going on a whim because a recruiter contacted me. I wasn't exactly job hunting, so if I was told that I didn't get the job, it wouldn't have been the end of the world.

My brother used to work for this company, before most of his department got laid off. He got in touch with the hiring manager and asked if I could call to inquire before applying.

I dunno how much the connection itself ended up mattering, since my manager didn't know him and had never heard of him, but I have no doubt getting to talk ahead of time gave me an advantage.

I applied. A few months later, got an email to take a test. Got an email a couple months later to set up a doctors visit. A month later I got a tentative letter that included a set of directions to follow. A couple weeks later I got a phonecall that told me I had two weeks to figure out how to leave my job and apartment and fly out for training. Then I did six months training in the middle of nowhere that required me to get over a 70% passing score where 66% of the grade was between three practicals on the last day.

It was the most stress I've ever felt in my life but I'd do it all over again.

Transferred into the job site from a previous position out of state and knew the interview questions from it being my third time applying for the type of position. Then spent 2 months training in Memphis, Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis. Only real anxiety was the training since if I failed, I'd get demoted to an entry level position instead of the mid level position I originally transferred in with.

Applied through some classifieds phone app, got called in to have an interview. I was pretty sure I would either get the job or be highly considered because of my skills.

Interview was kind of stressful because it was the first time I'd had to sit through an actual job interview in Japan, even if it was for a part-time position. I got over it by trying to give off 'I'm suitable for this job and you need someone like me' vibes.

Now I'm pretty much senior staff and just a step below my manager. It sucks because I'm still considered a part-time worker with added responsibilities, but I've earned their trust so I can goof off from time to time.

I have been playing poker for a living for close to 2 years now. I planned it out much earlier in advance though, I saved up enough money through my job and playing poker part time before transitioning into poker fully. It really wasnt a stressful decision for me, I knew this was something I wanted to do since I was 18 which was about a decade ago. I didnt have the money to pull the trigger all these years but when I did, I didnt hesitate. I figure if I fail in my venture and go broke no big deal, Ill just get regular job, Im young enough to take risks like this. But dear god I hope I dont fail in the long term, I never want to go back to working a 9-5 again, just not for me.

had resume posted online

they found me

interviewed very early in the morning, where they asked if I knew about a variety of topics related to Material Science and more or less said no to all of them (I have a degree in Environmental Science -- trees/water/air is pretty far from steel/ceramics/diamons)

came home, took a nap because was up super early

got a call in the afternoon and groggily accepted the job
